eruditionis Asaph ut quid Deus reppulisti in finem fumavit furor tuus in gregem pascuae tuae Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
recordare congregationis tuae quam possedisti ab initio et redemisti virgam hereditatis tuae montis Sion in quo habitasti But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
sublimitas pedum tuorum dissipata est usque ad finem omnia mala egit inimicus in sanctuario For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
fremuerunt hostes tui in medio pacti tui posuerunt signa sua in tropeum For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
manifesta in introitu desuper in saltu lignorum secures They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
et nunc scalpturas eius pariter bipinne et dolatoriis deraserunt Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
miserunt ignem in sanctuarium tuum in terram contaminaverunt habitaculum nominis tui Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
dixerunt in cordibus suis posteri eorum simul incenderunt omnes sollemnitates Dei in terra They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
signa nostra non vidimus non est ultra propheta et non est nobiscum qui sciat usquequo They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
usquequo Deus exprobrabit adversarius blasphemabit inimicus nomen tuum in finem Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
quare convertis manum tuam et dexteram tuam ad medium sinum tuum consume And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
Deus autem rex meus ab initio operatur salutes in medio terrae Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
tu dissipasti in fortitudine tua mare contrivisti capita draconum in aquis Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
tu confregisti capita Leviathan dedisti eum in escam populo Aethiopum For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
tu disrupisti fontem et torrentem tu exsiccasti flumina fortia If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
tua est dies et tua est nox tu ordinasti luminaria et solem When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
tu statuisti omnes terminos terrae aestatem et hiemem tu plasmasti Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
memento huius inimicus exprobravit Domino et populus insipiens blasphemavit nomen tuum Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
ne tradas bestiis animam eruditam lege tua vitae pauperum tuorum ne obliviscaris in perpetuum How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
respice ad pactum quia repletae sunt tenebris terrae habitationes iniquae subrutae As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
ne revertatur confractus et confusus egenus et pauper laudabunt nomen tuum Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
surge Deus iudica causam tuam memento obprobrii tui ab insipiente tota die So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
ne obliviscaris vocis hostium tuorum sonitus adversariorum tuorum ascendit iugiter Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
— Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
— Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
— My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
— For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
— But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
