1 Uti tredje årena af Jojakims, Juda Konungs, rike kom NebucadNezar, Konungen i Babel, in för Jerusalem, och belade det. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 Och HERren gaf Jojakim, Juda Konung, honom i händer, och en hop af kärille utu Guds hus; hwilken han lät föra in uti Sinear land, i sins guds hus, och lade de kärillen uti sins guds fatabur. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3 Och Konungen sade til Aspenas, sin öfwersta kamererare, at han skulle utsöka honom af Israels barnom, af Konungsliga slägt, och herra barnom, And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4 Några unga drängar, som ingen wank hade; utan dägelige woro, förnuftige, wise, kloke och förståndige; hwilke skickelige woro til at tjena i Konungens gård, och til at lära Chaldeiska skrift och mål. Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 Dessom bestälte Konungen, hwad man dem dageliga gifwa skulle af hans spis, och af det win, der han sjelf af drack; på det at då de så i tre år upfödde woro, skulle de sedan tjena inför Konungenom. And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6 Så woro ibland dem Daniel, Hanania, Misael och Asaria, af Juda barnom. Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7 Och den öfwerste kamereraren gaf dem namn; och nämnde Daniel Beltesazar, och Hanania Sadrach, och Misael Mesach, och Asaria AbedNego. Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed–nego.
8 Men Daniel satte sig före i sitt hjerta, at han icke wille orena sig med Konungens spis, och med det win, som han sjelf drack; och bad öfwersta kamereraren, at han icke skulle orena sig. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 Och Gud gaf Daniel, att öfwerste kamereraren warde honom gunstig och god. Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10 Och han sade til honom: Jag fruktar för min Herra Konungen, den eder spis och dryck bestyrt hafwer: Om han får se, at edor ansikte äro magrare än de andra drängars, som eder jämnåldrige äro, så gören I mig brotsligan til döden, inför Konungenom. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11 Då sade Daniel til Melzar, hwilkom öfwerste kamereraren Daniel, Hanania, Misael och Asaria, befallt hade: Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 Försök dock der med dina tjenare i tio dagar, och låt gifwa oss mos til at äta, och watn til at dricka: Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 Och låt alltså komma för dig wår och de andra drängars ansikte, som af Konungens spis äta; och efter som du då ser, derefter gör med dina tjenare. Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14 Och han hörde dem derutinnan, och försökte det med dem i tio dagar. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 Och efter de tio dagar woro de dägeligare och bättre wid hull, än alle de drängar, som spisades af Konungens spis. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
16 Så satte Melzar bort deras spis och dryck, den dem tilskickad war, och gaf dem mos. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17 Men dessa fyras Gud gaf dem konst och förstånd uti allahanda skrift och wishet; men Daniel gaf han förstånd i alla syner och drömar. As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
18 Då tiden förlupen war, som Konungen förelagt hade, at de skulle hafwas inför honom, hade öfwerste kamereraren dem in för NebucadNezar. Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Och Konungen talade med dem: Och wardt ingen ibland dem alla funnen, som Daniels, Hanania, Misaels och Asaria, like war; och de wordo Konungens tjenare. And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
20 Och Konungen fann dem i alla saker, de han dem frågade, tio sinom klokare och förståndigare, än alla stjernokikare och wisa i hela sino rike. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21 Och lefde Daniel intil Konung Cores första år. And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
