1	세례자 요한이 죽임을 당하다(막 6:14-29; 눅 9:7-9) 그 무렵에 분봉왕 헤롯이 예수의 소문을 듣고서, 자기 신하들에게 말하였다.	At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2	"이 사람은 세례자 요한이다. 그가 죽은 사람 가운데서 살아났다. 그 때문에 그가 이런 놀라운 능력을 발휘하는 것이다."	And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
3	헤롯은 일찍이, 자기 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아 때문에 요한을 붙잡아다가 묶어서, 감옥에 가둔 일이 있었다.	For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
4	그것은 요한이 헤롯에게 "그 여자를 차지하는 것은 옳지 않습니다" 하고 여러 차례 말하였기 때문이다.	For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5	그래서 헤롯은 요한을 죽이려고 하였으나, 민중이 두려워서 그렇게 하지 못하였다. 그것은, 그들이 요한을 예언자로 여기고 있었기 때문이다.	And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6	그런데 마침, 헤롯의 생일에 헤로디아의 딸이 손님들 앞에서 춤을 추어서, 헤롯을 즐겁게 해주었다.	But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
7	그리하여 헤롯은, 그 소녀에게, 청하는 것은 무엇이든지 주겠다고 맹세로써 약속하였다.	Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
8	소녀는 자기 어머니가 시키는 대로 "세례자 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아서, 이리로 가져다 주십시오" 하고 말하였다.	And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
9	왕은 마음이 괴로웠지만, 이미 맹세를 하였고, 또 손님들이 보고 있는 앞이므로, 그렇게 해주라고 명령하였다.	And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
10	그래서 그는 사람을 보내서, 감옥에서 요한의 목을 베어 오게 하였다.	And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11	그 머리를 쟁반에 담아서 가져다가 소녀에게 주니, 소녀는 그것을 자기 어머니에게 가져 갔다.	And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12	요한의 제자들이 와서, 그 시체를 거두어다가 장사지내고 나서, 예수께로 가서 알려드렸다.	And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13	오천 명을 먹이시다(막 6:30-44; 눅 9:10-17; 요 6:1-14) 예수께서 그 말을 들으시고, 거기에서 배를 타고, 따로 외딴 곳으로 물러가셨다. 이 소문이 퍼지자, 무리가 여러 동네에서 몰려나와서, 걸어서 예수를 따라왔다.	When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14	예수께서 배에서 내려서, 큰 무리를 보시고, 그들을 불쌍히 여기시고, 그들 가운데서 앓는 사람들을 고쳐 주셨다.	And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15	저녁때가 되니, 제자들이 예수께 다가와서 아뢰었다. "여기는 빈 들이고, 날도 이미 저물었습니다. 그러니 무리를 흩어 보내서, 제각기 먹을 것을 사먹게 마을로 보내시는 것이 좋겠습니다."	And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16	예수께서 말씀하셨다. "물러갈 필요가 없다. 너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라."	But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17	제자들이 말하였다. "우리에게는 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리밖에 없습니다."	And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18	이 때에 예수께서 말씀하셨다. "그것들을 이리로 가져 오너라."	He said, Bring them hither to me.
19	그리고 예수께서는 무리를 풀밭에 앉게 하시고서, 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 손에 드시고, 하늘을 우러러 감사 기도를 드리신 뒤에, 떼어서 제자들에게 주시니, 제자들이 이를 무리에게 나누어 주었다.	And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20	그들은 모두 배불리 먹었다. 남은 빵 부스러기를 모으니, 열두 광주리에 가득 찼다.	And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21	먹은 사람은 여자들과 어린 아이들 밖에, 남자 어른만도 오천 명쯤 되었다.	And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22	물 위로 걸으시다(막 6:45-52; 요 6:15-21) 예수께서는 곧 제자들을 재촉하여 배에 태워, 자기보다 먼저 건너편으로 가게 하시고, 그 동안에 무리를 헤쳐 보내셨다.	And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23	무리를 헤쳐 보내신 뒤에, 예수께서는 따로 기도하시려고 산에 올라가셨다. 날이 이미 저물었을 때에, 예수께서는 홀로 거기에 계셨다.	And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24	제자들이 탄 배는, 그 사이에 이미 육지에서 멀리 떨어져 있었는데, 풍랑에 몹시 시달리고 있었다. 바람이 거슬러서 불어왔기 때문이다.	But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25	이른 새벽에 예수께서 바다 위를 걸어서 제자들에게로 가셨다.	And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26	제자들이, 예수께서 바다 위로 걸어오시는 것을 보고, 겁에 질려서 "유령이다!" 하였다. 그들은 무서워서 소리를 질렀다.	And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27	예수께서 곧 그들에게 말씀하시기를 "안심하여라. 나다. 두려워하지 말아라" 하셨다.	But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28	베드로가 예수께 대답하여 말하기를 "주님, 주님이시면, 나더러 물 위로 걸어서, 주님께로 오라고 명령하십시오" 하니,	And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29	예수께서 "오너라" 하셨다. 베드로는 배에서 내려 물 위로 걸어서, 예수께로 갔다.	And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30	그러나 베드로는 거센 바람이 불어오는 것을 보자, 무서움에 사로잡혀서, 물에 빠져 들어가게 되었다. 그 때에 그는 "주님, 살려 주십시오" 하고 외쳤다.	But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31	예수께서 곧 손을 내밀어서, 그를 붙잡고 "믿음이 적은 사람아, 왜 의심하였느냐?" 하셨다.	And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32	그리고 그들이 함께 배에 오르니, 바람이 그쳤다.	And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33	배 안에 있던 사람들은 그에게 무릎을 꿇어서 경배드리고 "선생님은 참으로 하나님의 아들이십니다" 하였다.	Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34	게네사렛에서 병자들을 고치시다(막 6:53-56) 그들은 바다를 건너가서, 게네사렛 땅에 이르렀다.	And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35	그 곳 사람들이 예수를 알아보고, 주위의 온 지방으로 사람을 보내어, 병자를 모두 그에게 데리고 왔다.	And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36	그들은 예수께, 그 옷술만에라도 손을 대게 해 달라고 간청하였다. 그리고 손을 댄 사람은 모두 나았다.	And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
