1	아버지께서 우리에게 얼마나 큰 사랑을 베푸셨는지를 생각해 보십시오. 하나님께서 우리를 자기의 자녀라 일컬어 주셨으니 우리는 하나님의 자녀입니다. 세상이 우리를 알지 못하는 까닭은 하나님을 알지 못하기 때문입니다.	Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2	사랑하는 여러분, 이제 우리는 하나님의 자녀입니다. 앞으로 우리가 어떻게 될지는 아직 밝혀지지 않았습니다만, 그리스도께서 나타나시면, 우리도 그와 같이 될 것임을 압니다. 그 때에 우리가 그를 참모습대로 뵙게 될 것이기 때문입니다.	Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3	그에게 이런 소망을 두는 사람은 누구나, 그가 깨끗하신 것과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게 합니다.	And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4	죄를 짓는 사람마다 불법을 행하는 사람입니다. 죄는 곧 불법입니다.	Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5	여러분이 아는 대로, 그리스도께서는 죄를 없애려고 나타나셨습니다. 그리스도는 죄가 없는 분이십니다.	And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6	그러므로 그리스도 안에 머물러 있는 사람마다 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 죄를 짓는 사람마다 그를 보지도 못한 사람이고, 알지도 못한 사람입니다.	Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7	자녀 된 이 여러분, 아무에게도 미혹을 당하지 마십시오. 의를 행하는 사람은 하나님이 의로우신 것과 같이 의롭습니다.	Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8	죄를 짓는 사람은 악마에게 속해 있습니다. 악마는 처음부터 죄를 짓는 자이기 때문입니다. 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 목적은 악마의 일을 멸하시려는 것입니다.	He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9	하나님에게서 난 사람은 누구나 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 하나님의 씨가 그 사람 속에 있기 때문입니다. 그는 죄를 지을 수 없습니다. 그가 하나님에게서 났기 때문입니다.	Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10	하나님의 자녀와 악마의 자녀가 여기에서 환히 드러납니다. 곧 의를 행하지 않는 사람과 자기 형제자매를 사랑하지 않는 사람은 누구나 하나님에게서 난 사람이 아닙니다.	In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11	서로 사랑하라 여러분이 처음부터 들은 소식은 이것이니, 곧 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다.	For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12	우리는 가인과 같은 사람이 되지 말아야 합니다. 그는 악한 자에게 속한 사람이어서 자기 동생을 쳐죽였습니다. 무엇 때문에 그는 동생을 쳐죽였습니까? 그가 한 일은 악했는데, 동생이 한 일은 의로웠기 때문입니다.	Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13	형제자매 여러분, 세상이 여러분을 미워해도 이상히 여기지 마십시오.	Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14	우리가 이미 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨갔다는 것을 우리는 압니다. 이것을 아는 것은 우리가 형제자매를 사랑하기 때문입니다. 사랑하지 않는 사람은 죽음에 머물러 있습니다.	We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15	자기 형제자매를 미워하는 사람은 누구나 살인하는 사람입니다. 살인하는 사람은 누구나 그 속에 영원한 생명이 머물러 있지 않다는 것을 여러분은 압니다.	Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16	그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리셨습니다. 이것으로 우리가 사랑을 알게 되었습니다. 그러므로 우리도 형제자매를 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅합니다.	Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17	누구든지 세상 재물을 가지고 있으면서, 자기 형제자매의 궁핍함을 보고도, 마음 문을 닫고 도와주지 않으면, 어떻게 하나님의 사랑이 그 사람 속에 머물겠습니까?	But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18	자녀 된 이 여러분, 우리는 말이나 혀로 사랑하지 말고, 행동과 진실함으로 사랑합시다.	My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19	하나님 앞에서 가지는 확신 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 우리가 진리에서 났음을 알게 될 것입니다. 또 우리는 하나님 앞에서 확신을 가지게 될 것입니다.	And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20	우리가 마음에 가책을 받는다 하더라도 우리는 그러한 확신을 가지게 될 것입니다. 하나님은 우리 마음보다 크신 분이시고, 또 모든 것을 알고 계시기 때문입니다.	For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21	사랑하는 여러분, 우리가 마음에 가책을 받지 않으면, 우리는 하나님 앞에서 담대함을 가지고 있는 것이요,	Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22	우리가 구하는 것은 무엇이든지 하나님에게서 받을 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 계명을 지키고, 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 하기 때문입니다.	And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23	하나님의 계명은 이것이니, 곧 그 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고, 그리스도께서 우리에게 명하신 대로 서로 사랑하라는 것입니다.	And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24	그리스도의 계명을 지키는 사람은 그리스도 안에 있고, 그리스도께서도 그 사람 안에 계십니다. 그리스도께서 우리 안에 계시다는 것을, 그가 우리에게 주신 성령으로 우리는 압니다.	And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
