1	다말이 유다의 쌍둥이 아들을 낳다 그 무렵에 일어난 일이다. 유다가 형제들을 떠나 내려가다가, 아둘람 사람이 사는 데까지 가서 자리를 잡았다. 그의 이름은 히라였다.	And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2	유다는 거기서 가나안 사람의 딸을 보았다. 그 가나안 사람의 이름은 수아였다. 유다는 그 딸을 아내로 맞아들여 그에게 들어갔다.	And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
3	아내가 아이를 가져 아들을 낳았다. 유다가 아이의 이름을 에르라고 지어 불렀다.	And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
4	아내가 또 아이를 가져 아들을 낳았다. 아내가 아이의 이름을 오난이라고 지어 불렀다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
5	아내가 다시 아이를 가져 아들을 낳았다. 아내가 아이의 이름을 셀라라고 지어 불렀다. 아내가 셀라를 낳을 때 유다는 그십에 있었다.	And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
6	유다는 맏아들 에르를 위한 신붓감을 맞아들였다. 그의 이름은 다말이었다.	And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7	유다의 맏아들 에르는 여호와께서 보시기에 악했다. 그래서 여호와께서 그를 죽이셨다.	And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.
8	유다가 오난에게 말했다. “너의 형수에게 들어가렴. 형수와 결혼하여 너의 형에게 자식이 생기게 하렴.”	And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9	오난은 그 자식이 자기 자식이 되지 않는다는 것을 알았다. 그래서 형수에게 들어갈 때면, 정액을 땅바닥에 쏟아 못 쓰게 하곤 했다. 형에게 자식이 생기지 않게 하려 한 것이다.	And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10	오난이 한 짓이 여호와 보시기에 악했다. 그래서 오난도 죽이셨다.	And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.
11	유다가 자기 며느리 다말에게 말했다. “남편 여읜 여자로 친정집에 가서 지내렴, 내 아들 셀라가 다 클 때까지는.” 유다는 셀라도 형들처럼 죽지 않을까 생각했기 때문이다. 그래서 다말은 친정집에 가서 지냈다.	Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
12	세월이 흘러 수아의 딸, 유다의 아내가 죽었다. 슬픔이 가신 뒤에 유다는 자신의 양 떼 털을 깎는 사람들에게로, 딤나로 올라갔다. 친구인 아둘람 사람 히라와 함께 갔다.	And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13	누군가가 다말에게 이 사실을 알려 주었다. “저기, 당신 시아버지가 딤나로 올라가고 계세요. 자신의 양 떼 털을 깎으려고요.”	And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
14	다말은 남편 여읜 여자의 옷을 벗고, 너울로 얼굴을 가린 채 몸을 감쌌다. 그러고는 딤나로 가는 길에 있는 에나임 들머리에 앉았다. 다말이 보기에는 셀라가 다 컸는데도, 유다가 다말을 셀라의 아내가 되게 해 주지 않았기 때문이다.	And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
15	유다가 다말을 보았을 때, 성매매 여성이라고 생각했다. 다말이 얼굴을 가리고 있었기 때문이다.	When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
16	유다는 그 길가에 있는 다말에게로 몸을 돌렸다. 그러고는 말을 건넸다. “이보게, 자네에게 들어가고 싶군.” 그가 자신의 며느리인 것을 알아차리지 못했기 때문이다. 다말이 물었다. “제게 무엇을 주고 저에게 들어오실 건가요?”	And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
17	유다가 대답했다. “내가, 새끼 염소 한 마리를 내 짐승 떼 가운데서 보내 주겠네.” 다말이 말했다. “보내 주실 때까지 맡아 둘 담보물을 주신다면요!”	And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
18	유다가 물었다. “어떤 담보물을 주면 되겠나?” 여자가 대답했다. “손님의 도장과 끈과 손에 드신 지팡이면 됩니다.” 유다는 그것들을 주고 다말에게 들어갔다. 다말이 유다의 아이를 가졌다.	And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
19	다말이 일어나 가서 너울을 벗고, 남편 여읜 여자의 옷을 입었다.	And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20	유다는 새끼 염소를 친구인 아둘람 사람의 손에 맡겨 보냈다. 그 여자의 손에서 담보물을 돌려받으려 한 것이다. 그러나 친구는 여자를 찾지 못했다.	And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.
21	친구는 그곳 사람들에게 수소문해 보았다. “신전에서 몸을 바치는 여자가 어디에 있나요? 에나임 길가에 있었는데요.” 그들은 대답했다. “신전에서 몸을 바치는 여자는 여기에 없는데요.”	Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
22	친구는 유다에게 돌아와 말했다. “그 여자를 못 찾았네. 그곳 사람들도 이렇게 말하더군. ‘신전에서 몸을 바치는 여자는 여기에 없는데요.’”	And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
23	유다가 말했다. “그 여자가 담보물을 다 가지라지. 우리를 깔보지 않도록 말일세. 이보게, 나는 이 새끼 염소를 보냈어. 자네가 그 여자를 찾지 못한 거야.”	And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
24	3개월쯤 지나서 누군가가 유다에게 알려 주었다. “어르신의 며느리 다말이 놀아났어요. 게다가, 보세요, 막 놀아나다가 아이를 가졌다고요.” 유다가 말했다. “다말을 끌고 나와 불태워 버려!”	And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25	다말은 끌려 나오면서 시아버지에게 사람을 보내 말을 전했다. “이 물건들 주인의 아이를 제가 가졌습니다. 이 도장과 끈과 지팡이의 주인이 누군지 밝혀 주십시오.”	When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26	유다는 물건들을 확인해 보고 말했다. “며느리가 나보다 옳아. 내가 그를 내 아들 셀라의 아내가 되게 해 주지 않았기 때문이야.” 유다가 며느리와 더는 잠자리하지 않았다.	And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
27	다말이 아이 낳을 때가 되었다. 그런데, 아, 뱃속에 쌍둥이가 있는 것이 아닌가!	And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28	다말이 아이를 낳는데, 한 아이가 손을 내밀었다. 출산을 돕는 여자가 그 손을 잡아 짙은 붉은색 실을 매어 주며 말했다. “이 아이가 먼저 나왔네.”	And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29	그런데 그 손이 도로 들어가더니, 이런, 그의 아우가 나오는 것이 아닌가! 출산을 돕는 여자가 말했다. “뭐냐, 스스로 찢어 틈새를 내다니!” 그래서 아이의 이름을 베레스라고 지어 불렀다.	And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30	뒤이어 그의 형이 나왔다. 손에 짙은 붉은색 실을 맨 채로였다. 아이의 이름을 세라흐라고 지어 불렀다.	And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
