1	라헬이 보니, 자신은 야곱에게 아이를 낳아 줄 수 없었다. 라헬은 언니를 부러워하여 야곱에게 말했다. “나도 아이를 낳게 해 줘요! 안 그러면 죽어 버릴 테니까.”	And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
2	야곱이 라헬을 향한 노여움으로 불타올라서 말했다. “내가 하나님을 대신하겠소? 하나님이 당신에게 몸의 열매를 주시지 않는 거요.”	And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
3	라헬이 말했다. “여기, 내 여자 노예 빌하가 있어요. 그에게 들어가세요. 그가 아이를 낳아 내 품에 안겨 주면, 그에게서 나도 자식을 얻는 셈이니까요.”	And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.
4	라헬이 야곱에게 자기 여자 노예 빌하를 아내로 맞아들이게 했다. 야곱이 그에게 들어갔다.	And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
5	빌하가 아이를 가져 야곱에게 아들을 낳아 주었다.	And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
6	라헬이 말했다. “하나님이 내 권리를 찾아 주셨어. 내 목소리를 들으시고 내게 아들을 주셨어.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 단이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
7	라헬의 여자 노예 빌하가 다시 아이를 가져 야곱에게 두 번째로 아들을 낳아 주었다.	And Bilhah Rachel’s maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.
8	라헬이 말했다. “내가 언니와 제대로 맞씨름하여 이겼어.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 납달리라고 지어 불렀다.	And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.
9	레아가 보니, 자신이 더는 아이를 낳을 수 없었다. 그래서 야곱에게 자기 여자 노예 실바를 아내로 맞아들이게 했다.	When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10	레아의 여자 노예 실바가 야곱에게 아들을 낳아 주었다.	And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.
11	레아가 말했다. “다행이야!” 그래서 아이의 이름을 갓이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.
12	레아의 여자 노예 실바가 아들을 두 번째로 야곱에게 낳아 주었다.	And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a second son.
13	레아가 말했다. “난 복 있어. 여자들이 나를 가리켜 복 있다고 할 거야.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 아셀이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
14	밀걷이 철에 르우벤이 들에 나갔다가 사랑의 약초를 발견하고는 자기 어머니 레아에게 갖다주었다. 라헬이 레아에게 요청했다. “언니 아들이 구해 온 사랑의 약초를 나에게도 조금 나눠 주세요.”	And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.
15	레아가 대답했다. “네가 나에게서 남편을 빼앗아 간 것도 모자라 나의 아들이 구해 온 약초까지 빼앗아 가려는 거냐?” 라헬이 제안했다. “오늘 밤 남편이 언니와 함께 눕게 해 드릴 테니, 대신 언니 아들이 구해 온 약초를 주세요.”	And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
16	야곱이 저녁에 들에서 돌아오자, 레아가 나가서 그를 맞으며 말했다. “나에게 들어오셔야 해요. 나의 아들이 구해 온 사랑의 약초를 넘겨준 값으로 내가 당신을 오롯이 샀거든요.” 그래서 야곱이 그날 밤에는 레아와 함께 누웠다.	And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17	하나님이 레아의 말을 들어 주셨다. 그가 아이를 가져 야곱에게서 다섯 번째 아들을 낳았다.	And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18	레아가 말했다. “하나님이 나에게 삯을 치러 주셨구나. 내가 남편에게 나의 여자 노예를 주었거든.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 잇사갈이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.
19	레아가 다시 아이를 가져 야곱에게서 여섯 번째 아들을 낳았다.	And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
20	레아가 말했다. “하나님이 나에게 좋은 선물을 주셨구나. 이번에는 남편이 나를 높여 줄 테지. 아들을 여섯이나 낳아 주었으니까.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 스불론이라고 지어 불렀다.	And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.
21	그 뒤로는 딸을 낳아 이름을 디나라고 지어 불렀다.	And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
22	하나님이 라헬을 기억하셨다. 하나님이 그의 말을 들어 주셔서 아기집을 열어 주신 것이다.	And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23	그래서 라헬이 아이를 가져 아들을 낳고는 말했다. “하나님이 나의 창피함을 없애 주셨구나.”	And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
24	아이의 이름을 요셉이라고 지어 부르면서 말했다. “여호와께서 내게 아들을 하나 더해 주시기를!”	And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.
25	야곱이 라반의 집에서 부자가 되다 라헬이 요셉을 낳자 야곱이 라반에게 말했다. “저를 내보내 주세요. 제가 살던 곳, 저의 땅으로 가고 싶습니다.	And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
26	아내들과 아이들을 놓아주세요. 그들은 제가 장인어른을 위해서 일한 삯으로 얻은 사람들입니다. 이제 함께 떠나게 해 주세요. 장인어른이야말로 알고 계십니다. 제가 장인어른을 위해서 얼마나 열심히 일했는지를요.”	Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
27	라반이 야곱에게 대답했다. “자네가 나를 괜찮게 생각한다면, 그냥 머물게나. 내가 나름대로 느끼는 게 있네. 여호와께서 자네 덕분에 나에게 복을 내리신 것 같아.”	And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.
28	라반이 또 말했다. “자네가 바라는 품삯을 내게 확실히 말해 봐. 내가 주겠네.”	And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
29	야곱이 대답했다. “제가 이 집 일을 어떻게 해 왔는지, 집짐승들을 어떻게 보살펴 왔는지는 장인어른이 잘 아십니다.	And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
30	제가 오기 전에 장인어른에게 있던 것은 보잘것없었습니다. 그런데 엄청나게 많이 불어났습니다. 제 발걸음에 맞추어 여호와께서 장인어른에게 복을 내리셨습니다. 이제는 저도 저의 집을 위해서 뭔가를 하고 싶습니다. 언제 그럴 수 있을까요?”	For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
31	라반이 물었다. “자네에게 무엇을 줄까?” 야곱이 대답했다. “저에게 아무것도 주지 않으셔도 괜찮습니다. 그냥 이 한 가지만 저에게 해 주세요. 그렇게 하시면 제가 돌아가 장인어른의 짐승 떼를 먹이겠습니다. 지켜 드리겠습니다.	And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:
32	제가 장인어른의 온 짐승 떼 사이를 오늘 지나다녀 보겠습니다. 거기서 숫양 가운데 점박이와 얼룩빼기와 거무스름한 것을 다 골라내겠습니다. 염소 가운데서도 얼룩빼기와 점박이를 골라내겠습니다. 그걸 제 삯으로 해 주십시오.	I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
33	나중에 장인어른이 제 품삯을 살펴보러 오시더라도 제가 공의롭다는 사실이 드러날 것입니다. 염소 가운데 얼룩빼기도 아니고 점박이도 아닌 것과 숫양 가운데 거무스름하지 않은 것이 있으면 다 제가 도둑질한 것일 테지요.”	So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
34	라반이 말했다. “좋아. 자네 말대로 하지.”	And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
35	바로 그날 라반은 숫염소 가운데서 줄무늬 있는 것과 점박이와 얼룩빼기를 골라냈다. 암염소 가운데서 희끄무레하고 점과 얼룩이 있는 것을 다 골라냈다. 숫양 가운데서 거무스름한 것까지 다 골라내어 아들들의 손에 넘겼다.	And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
36	그러고는 자신과 야곱 사이에 3일 길의 거리를 두었다. 야곱은 라반의 나머지 양 떼를 돌보았다.	And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37	야곱은 은백양나무의 싱싱한 가지를 꺾었다. 아몬드나무와 버즘나무의 가지도 꺾었다. 그러고는 껍질을 벗겨 하얀 속을 드러내 줄무늬를 만들었다.	And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
38	야곱은 벗긴 가지들을 양 떼가 물을 마시러 오는 도랑의 물독에 세워 두어 양 떼가 바로 보게 했다. 양 떼가 물 마시러 왔을 때 짝짓기를 했다.	And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
39	양 떼는 나뭇가지들을 바라보며 짝짓기를 했고, 양 떼는 줄무늬 있는 것이나 점박이나 얼룩빼기 새끼를 낳았다.	And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
40	야곱은 그 새끼 양들을 가려내어 라반의 양 떼 중에 줄무늬가 있거나 거무스름한 양들 맞은편에 두었다. 자신의 양 떼는 따로 두어 라반의 양 떼와 섞이지 않게 했다.	And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban’s cattle.
41	튼튼한 양들이 짝짓기를 할 때는 야곱이 나뭇가지들을 양 떼의 눈앞에, 곧 물독에 두었다. 그래서 양들이 나뭇가지들을 보며 짝짓기를 했다.	And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
42	허약한 양들 앞에는 나뭇가지들을 두지 않았다. 그래서 허약한 양들은 라반의 것이 되고 튼튼한 양들은 야곱의 것이 되었다.	But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43	야곱의 재산이 어마어마하게 불어났다. 많은 양을 비롯하여 남자 노예들과 여자 노예들과 낙타들과 나귀들이 그의 것이 되었다.	And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
