1	야곱이 라반의 집에 도착하다 야곱은 발걸음을 떼어 동쪽 사람들의 땅으로 갔다.	Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
2	야곱이 보니, 아, 들에 우물이 있는 것이 아닌가! 또, 아, 거기에 세 무리의 양 떼가 우물가에 누워 있는 것이 아닌가! 사람들이 양 떼에게 그 우물물을 마시게 했기 때문이다. 그런데 우물 입구 위에는 큰 돌이 놓여 있었다.	And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.
3	양 떼가 그리로 다 모이면 사람들이 우물 어귀 위에서 돌을 굴려 내고 양 떼에게 물을 마시게 했다. 그러고는 돌을 우물 어귀 위 제자리에 되돌려 놓곤 했다.	And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
4	야곱이 사람들에게 말을 걸었다. “저기요, 형제들은 어디서 오셨나요?” 그들이 대답했다. “우리는 하란에서 왔습니다.”	And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
5	야곱이 그들에게 물었다. “나홀의 손자 라반을 아시나요?” 그들이 대답했다. “알지요.”	And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
6	야곱이 그들에게 다시 물었다. “그분은 잘 지내시나요?” 그들이 대답했다. “잘 지내십니다. 저기, 마침 그분의 딸 라헬이 양 떼를 몰고 오고 있군요.”	And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
7	야곱이 말했다. “보세요, 아직 한낮이라 짐승들을 모아들일 시간이 아니군요. 양 떼에게 물을 마시게 한 뒤에 가서 풀을 뜯어 먹게 하시지요.”	And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
8	그러나 그들이 대답했다. “그렇게 할 수가 없어요. 우선 양 떼를 다 모으고 우물 어귀 위의 돌을 굴려 내야 해요. 그런 다음에야 우리는 양 떼에게 물을 마시게 한답니다.”	And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
9	야곱이 아직 사람들과 이야기를 나누고 있는데 라헬이 자기 아버지의 양 떼를 몰고 왔다. 라헬은 양치기였다.	And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them.
10	라반 외삼촌의 딸 라헬과 라반 외삼촌의 양 떼를 보자마자, 야곱이 가까이 갔다. 우물 어귀 위에서 돌을 굴려 내어 라반 외삼촌의 양 떼가 물을 마시게 했다.	And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
11	야곱은 라헬에게 입맞춤하고는 목 놓아 울었다.	And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
12	야곱은 라헬에게 이야기하기를, 자신과 라헬의 아버지는 조카와 외삼촌 사이이고 자신은 리브가의 아들이라고 했다. 라헬은 달려가서 아버지에게 알렸다.	And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father.
13	라반은 누이의 아들 야곱의 소식을 듣자마자 뛰어나왔다. 그를 만나 껴안고 입 맞추고는 자기 집으로 데려갔다. 야곱은 라반에게 이 모든 일을 이야기했다.	And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
14	그러자 라반이 그에게 말했다. “확실해. 너는 나의 피붙이고 살붙이야!” 야곱은 한 달 꼬박 라반의 집에 머물렀다.	And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
15	야곱이 레아와 라헬을 아내로 맞아들이다 라반이 야곱에게 물었다. “네가 나의 조카라고 해도 나의 집 일을 무보수로 할 수는 없지 않느냐? 너의 품삯을 어떻게 해야 할지 나에게 말해 보렴.”	And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
16	라반에게는 딸이 둘 있었다. 큰딸의 이름은 레아이고, 작은딸의 이름은 라헬이었다.	And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17	레아는 눈이 신통치 않았고, 라헬은 생김새가 아름답고 모습도 빼어났다.	Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
18	야곱은 라헬을 사랑하고 있었다. 그래서 이렇게 대답했다. “제가 7년 동안 외삼촌 댁 일을 하겠으니, 외삼촌의 작은딸 라헬을 아내로 맞게 해 주세요.”	And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
19	라반이 말했다. “그 아이를 너한테 맡기는 것이 좋지, 다른 남자에게 맡기는 것보다는. 나와 함께 살자꾸나.”	And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
20	야곱은 라헬을 아내로 맞으려고 7년 동안 일했다. 7년이 그에게는 며칠 같았다. 라헬을 사랑했기 때문이다.	And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
21	야곱이 라반에게 말했다. “이제 제가 아내를 맞아들이게 해 주세요. 기한이 찼으니까요. 라헬에게 들어가고 싶습니다.”	And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
22	라반은 그곳 사람들을 다 모아 잔치를 베풀었다.	And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
23	저녁에 라반이 큰딸 레아를 야곱에게 데려다주었다. 야곱은 레아에게 들어갔다.	And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
24	라반은 레아에게 자신의 여자 노예 실바를 주었다. 자신의 딸 레아에게 여자 노예로 준 것이다.	And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.
25	이튿날 아침이었다. 아니, 신부가 레아 아닌가! 야곱이 라반에게 따졌다. “외삼촌이 저에게 뭣 때문에 이렇게 하셨습니까? 제가 라헬을 아내로 맞이하려고 외삼촌 댁 일을 하지 않았던가요? 왜 저를 속이셨습니까?”	And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
26	라반이 대답했다. “우리 지역에서는 큰딸보다 작은딸을 먼저 결혼시키지 않네.	And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27	이번 잔치 주간을 채우게! 그러면 라헬도 아내로 맞이하게 해 주겠네. 그 대가로 7년 더 내 곁에서 일을 해야 하네.”	Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
28	야곱이 그렇게 해서 그 주간을 채웠다. 그리고 라반은 그에게 자신의 딸 라헬을 아내로 맞이하게 해 주었다.	And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
29	라반은 자신의 딸 라헬에게 자신의 여자 노예 빌하를 주었다. 라헬에게 여자 노예로 준 것이다.	And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
30	야곱은 또한 라헬에게 들어갔다. 야곱은 라헬을 레아보다 더 사랑해서, 라반 곁에서 7년 더 일했다.	And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
31	야곱의 아이들이 태어나다 여호와께서 보시니, 레아가 사랑받지 못하고 있었다. 그래서 그의 아기집을 열어 주셨다. 그러나 라헬은 아이를 가지지 못했다.	And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.
32	레아가 아이를 가져 아들을 낳았다. 레아는 아이의 이름을 르우벤이라고 지어 불렀다. “여호와께서 내가 괴로움 겪는 것을 보셨어. 이제 남편이 나를 사랑할 테지.” 하고 말했기 때문이다.	And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
33	레아가 다시 아이를 가져 아들을 낳고는 말했다. “여호와께서 내가 사랑받지 못한다는 말을 들으시고 내게 이 아이도 주신 것이지.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 시므온이라고 지어 불렀다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.
34	레아가 다시 아이를 가져 아들을 낳고는 말했다. “이제 이번에는 남편이 나와 함께할 거야. 내가 그에게 아들을 셋이나 낳아 주었거든.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 레위라고 지어 불렀다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
35	레아가 다시 아이를 가져 아들을 낳고는 말했다. “이번에는 여호와를 찬양해야겠다.” 그래서 아이의 이름을 유다라고 지어 불렀다. 그러고는 레아에게서 출산이 멈추었다.	And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
