1	“내가 마음속으로 말했지요. ‘자, 이제 기쁨을 가지고서 너를 시험해 볼 거야. 좋은 것을 누려 봐라.’ 그런데요, 아, 이것 또한 허무한 일이었어요.	I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
2	웃는 것을 가리켜 나는 ‘바보짓이야.’ 하고 말했지요. 기뻐하는 것을 가리켜서는 ‘도대체 뭐 하는 짓이냐?’ 하고 말했고요.	I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3	포도주로 나의 몸을 즐겁게 하는 일도 마음속으로 곰곰이 생각했어요. 마음을 지혜로 이끌기도 하고 어리석은 일에 매달리기도 했지요. 마침내는 사람한테 어느 편이 더 좋은지 알고 싶었어요. 그리 길지 않은 일생 동안 하늘 아래에서 일하는 사람한테요.	I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
4	나는 일들을 크게 벌이기도 했어요. 나를 위해 집을 여러 채 짓기도 했고요. 포도밭을 여러 군데 만들기도 했지요.	I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5	나를 위해 정원과 숲을 여럿 만들어, 그 안에 온갖 열매 맺는 나무를 심기도 했고요.	I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
6	큰 연못을 여럿 만들어, 어린 나무들이 무성히 자라나는 숲에 물을 대기도 했어요.	I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7	남자 노예들과 여자 노예들을 사들이기도 했고, 집에서 태어난 하인들을 부리기도 했지요. 소 떼와 양 떼도, 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 살았던 어느 누구보다 나에게 더 많이 있었어요.	I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8	은과 금, 임금들의 재물과 여러 지방의 재물도 받아서 모았지요. 나를 위해 노래할 남자들과 여자들을 두었고, 사람들에게 큰 기쁨을 주는 젊은 여자들도 많이 두었어요.	I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9	나는 위대해졌고 세력이 늘어났지요. 그래서 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있었던 그 누구보다도 뛰어났어요. 게다가 나의 지혜가 내 곁에 머물러 있었어요.	So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10	내 눈이 보려는 것은 무엇이든 나는 막지 않았어요. 내 마음 가는 대로 어떤 기쁨도 마다하지 않았고요. 내가 수고할 때마다 거기서 내 마음은 기쁨을 느꼈거든요. 이것이 내가 수고할 때마다 거기서 얻은 나의 몫이었지요.	And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11	그러고서 내가 돌아보았어요. 내 손으로 한 모든 일을요. 또 일하느라 애썼던 모든 수고를요. 그랬더니, 아, 모든 것이 허무했고, 바람을 붙잡으려는 것이었지요. 해 아래에서 남는 것이 없었어요.	Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12	내가 돌아보았어요. 지혜와 얼빠진 것과 어리석은 것을 알려고요. 임금자리를 잇게 될 사람은 무엇을 해야 할까요? 그것도 예전에 이미 사람들이 하던 것이지요.	And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13	내가 보았어요, 지혜가 어리석음보다 유익한 것을요. 빛이 어둠보다 유익한 것과 같아요.	Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14	지혜로운 사람은 앞을 보면서 가지만, 어리석은 사람은 어둠 속을 걸어가지요. 그렇지만 나 또한 알게 되었어요, 똑같은 운명이 그들 모두에게 닥친다는 것을요.	The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15	내가 마음속으로 말했지요. ‘어리석은 사람에게 닥칠 운명이 나에게도 닥칠 텐데, 그렇다면 내가 무엇 때문에 그렇게 지혜롭게 행동하려 했던가?’ 또 마음속으로 말했지요. ‘이것 또한 허무하구나.’	Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16	어리석은 사람과 마찬가지로 지혜로운 사람 역시 사람들의 기억에 영원히 남지는 않지요. 세월이 흐르면 무엇이든 잊어지지요. 어째서 어리석은 사람과 마찬가지로 지혜로운 사람도 죽는 것일까요?	For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17	나는 삶이 싫어요. 해 아래에서 사람들이 하는 일이 나를 힘들게 하거든요. 무엇이든 허무하고 바람을 붙잡으려는 것이지요.	Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18	나는 싫어요, 해 아래에서 내가 애써 하는 모든 수고가요. 결국 내 뒤에 올 사람에게 넘겨주어야 하니까요.	Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
19	그 사람이 지혜로운 사람일지 어리석은 사람일지 누가 알까요? 내가 해 아래에서 지혜롭게 수고하여 이룬 것마다 그 사람이 맘대로 하게 된다니요! 이것 또한 허무하지요.	And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
20	그렇게 내가 돌이켜 보니, 내 마음이 무너지는군요. 해 아래에서 내가 일하느라 애쓴 모든 수고에 대해서요.	Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21	지혜와 지식과 재주를 가지고 수고하는 사람이 있다고 해 봐요. 그리고 그가 받은 몫을, 일하지 않은 사람한테 넘겨준다고 해 봐요. 그렇다면 이것 또한 허무하고 뭔가 크게 잘못된 것이지요.	For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22	사람이 수고한 모든 일과 마음고생한 일로 얻은 것이 무엇인가요? 그가 해 아래에서 수고한 일로요?	For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23	평생 그가 할 일은 아파하고 울분을 터뜨리는 것이지요. 밤에도 마음에 생각이 많아 잠을 설치지요. 이것 또한 허무하지요.	For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24	사람에게 좋은 것은, 먹고 마시며 온갖 수고 가운데 스스로 보람을 느끼는 것 아닌가요? 내가 보니, 이것 또한 하나님의 손에서 받은 것이에요.	There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
25	나 말고 잘 먹고 즐기는 사람이 누가 있을까요?	For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
26	하나님은 하나님 마음에 드는 사람에게 지혜와 지식과 기쁨을 주셨어요. 그러나 죄짓는 사람에게는 일을 주셔서 모으고 쌓게 하시고는, 하나님 마음에 드는 사람에게 주게 하셨어요. 이것 또한 허무하고 바람을 붙잡으려는 일이지요.”	For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
