1	진리의 영과 속여 헤매게 하는 영 사랑하는 여러분, 온갖 영을 다 믿지 마십시오. 그 영들이 하나님에게서 난 것인지를 검증해 보십시오. 많은 거짓 예언자들이 세상에 나왔기 때문입니다.	Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2	여러분은 하나님의 영을 이것으로 알아낼 수 있습니다. 곧 예수 그리스도께서 육신을 입고 오셨다는 것을 인정하는 영은 다 하나님에게서 났습니다.	Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3	예수님을 인정하지 않는 온갖 영은 다 하나님에게서 난 것이 아닙니다. 이것은 그리스도를 대적하는 자의 영입니다. 그 영이 온다는 것을 여러분이 전에 들었는데, 이제 그것이 벌써 세상에 와 있습니다.	And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4	자녀 여러분, 여러분은 하나님에게서 난 사람들이며, 또 여러분이 거짓 예언자들을 이겨 냈습니다. 여러분 안에 계신 분이 세상에 있는 자보다 크시기 때문입니다.	Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5	그들은, 세상에서 났습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그들은 세상에 속한 것을 말하고 세상은 그들의 말을 듣습니다.	They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6	그러나 우리는 하나님에게서 났습니다. 하나님을 아는 사람은 우리 말을 듣습니다. 하나님에게서 나지 않은 사람은 우리 말을 듣지 않습니다. 이것으로부터 우리는 진리의 영과 속여 헤매게 하는 영을 알아냅니다.	We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7	하나님은 사랑이시다 사랑하는 여러분, 우리는 서로 사랑합시다! 사랑은 하나님에게서 나는 것이기 때문입니다. 사랑하는 사람은 다 하나님에게서 태어났고 하나님을 알고 있습니다.	Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8	사랑하지 않는 사람은 하나님을 알지 못합니다. 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다.	He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9	하나님의 사랑이 우리 가운데 이렇게 드러났습니다. 곧 하나님이 하나님의 하나뿐인 아들을 세상으로 보내셔서, 우리가 그 아들을 통해서 살게 해 주셨습니다.	In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10	사랑은 이 사실에 있습니다. 곧 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니라, 하나님이 우리를 사랑하셔서 하나님의 아들을 보내어 우리 죄를 없애 주는 희생제물로 삼으셨다는 데 있습니다.	Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11	사랑하는 여러분, 하나님이 이토록 우리를 사랑하셨다면, 우리도 역시 서로 사랑해야 마땅합니다.	Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12	아무도 여태껏 하나님을 뵙지 못했습니다. 우리가 서로 사랑하면, 하나님이 우리 안에 머물러 계시며, 하나님의 사랑이 우리 안에서 완전히 이루어진 것입니다.	No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13	이것으로 우리가 하나님 안에 머물러 있고, 또 하나님이 친히 우리 안에 머물러 계시다는 것을 압니다. 곧 하나님이 하나님의 영을 우리에게 나눠 주셨다는 것으로 말입니다.	Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14	우리는, 아버지께서 그 아들을 세상의 구원자로 보내셨다는 것을 자세히 보았고 이제 증언합니다.	And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15	예수님이 하나님의 아들이신 것을 인정하는 사람은 누구든지 하나님이 그 사람 안에 머물러 계시며, 그 사람도 하나님 안에 머물러 있습니다.	Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16	그런데 우리는, 하나님이 우리에게 품으시는 그 사랑을 알았으며 또 믿어 왔습니다. 하나님은 사랑이십니다. 그 사랑 안에 머물러 있는 사람은 하나님 안에 머물러 있으며, 하나님도 그 사람 안에 머물러 계십니다.	And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17	이것으로 그 사랑이 우리에게서 완전히 이루어졌습니다. 그리하여 우리가 심판 날에 담대함을 가지게 되도록 말입니다. 그리스도께서 그러하신 것처럼, 우리 자신들도 이 세상에서 그러하기 때문입니다.	Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18	두려움 따위는 사랑 안에 없습니다. 오히려 완전한 사랑은 그 두려움을 밖으로 쫓아 버립니다. 그 두려움은 벌받는 일과 맞물려 있기 때문입니다. 두려워하는 사람은 사랑 안에서 완성되지 않았습니다.	There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19	우리는, 사랑합니다. 그분 자신이 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨기 때문입니다.	We love him, because he first loved us.
20	누군가 “나는 하나님을 사랑합니다.” 하고 말하면서 자기 형제자매를 미워한다면, 그는 거짓말쟁이입니다. 자기가 보아 온 자기 형제자매를 사랑하지 않는 사람은, 뵌 적이 없는 하나님을 사랑할 수 없으니까요.	If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21	이 계명은 우리가 하나님께 받아 가지고 있는 것입니다. 곧 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은 자기 형제자매도 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다.	And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
