1	하나님은 니네베를 사랑하신다 요나는 몹시 언짢았다. 화가 났다.	But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2	요나가 여호와께 기도하여 말씀드렸다. “아, 여호와여! 고국 땅에 있을 때 내가 한 말이 바로 이것 아닙니까? 이 때문에 내가 일찍이 다르시스로 달아나려고 했습니다. 나는 알고 있었습니다, 주님은 불쌍히 여기시고 자비로운 하나님이시라는 것을요. 오래 참으시고 한결같은 사랑이 넉넉하셔서 재난 내릴 뜻을 거두어들이기도 하신다는 것을요.	And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
3	이제, 여호와여, 나의 목숨을 거두어 주십시오. 죽는 것이 사는 것보다 낫기 때문입니다.”	Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
4	여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “네가 화낼 만하다는 것이지?”	Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
5	요나는 그 도시를 빠져나와 도시 동쪽에 자리를 잡았다. 거기서 초막을 만들고 그 아래 그늘에 앉았다. 도시에 무슨 일이 일어나는지 지켜보려고 한 것이다.	So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
6	여호와 하나님이 아주까리를 보내 주셨다. 아주까리는 요나의 위쪽으로 자랐고, 머리 위에 그림자를 드리워서 괴로움을 덜어 주었다. 요나는 아주까리 때문에 무척 기뻤다.	And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
7	이튿날 새벽녘에 하나님이 벌레를 보내셨다. 벌레가 아주까리를 찔러 갉아 먹자 그것이 말라 버렸다.	But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
8	해가 떴을 때 일이 일어났다. 하나님이 뜨거운 동풍을 보내신 것이다. 해가 요나의 머리 위로 찌르듯이 내리쬐어 요나가 정신을 잃을 정도였다. 그는 목숨이 끊어져 죽기를 구하여 말씀드렸다. “죽는 것이 사는 것보다 낫겠습니다.”	And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9	하나님이 요나에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 화낼 만하다는 것이지, 아주까리 때문에?” 그가 말씀드렸다. “화가 나서 죽을 지경입니다.”	And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
10	여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “너는 아주까리를 두고 아쉬워했다. 그 아주까리는 네가 공들이지도 않았고 기르지도 않았다. 밤사이에 생겼다가 밤사이에 죽었다.	Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
11	그렇다면 니네베 그 큰 도시를 두고 내가 아쉬워하지 않겠느냐? 그 안에는 오른쪽과 왼쪽을 구별하지 못하는 사람이 많이 있어서 120,000명이 넘는다. 짐승도 많이 있단다.”	And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
