1	니네베 사람들이 금식하며 돌이키다 여호와의 말씀이 요나에게 두 번째로 내려오는 일이 일어났다.	And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2	“일어나 가라, 큰 도시 니네베로! 그 도시에 널리 알려라, 내가 너에게 하는 말을!”	Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
3	요나는 일어나서, 여호와의 말씀대로 니네베로 갔다. 니네베는 엄청나게 큰 도시였다. 다 걸으려면 3일이 걸렸다.	So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
4	요나는 그 도시로 갓 들어가서 하룻길을 걸었다. 그리고 이렇게 외쳐 말했다. “40일이 더 지나면 니네베가 뒤엎어진다!”	And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5	니네베 사람들이 하나님을 믿었다. 그들은 금식을 선포하고 그들 가운데 대단한 사람부터 보잘것없는 사람에 이르기까지 모두 거친 천을 둘러 입었다.	So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6	그 말씀이 니네베 임금의 귀에 들어갔다. 임금은 자리에서 일어나 화려한 옷을 벗어 놓았다. 그러고는 거친 천으로 몸을 가리고 잿더미 위에 앉았다.	For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7	임금은 니네베에 선포하게 했다. “임금과 대신들의 명령이오. 사람이든 짐승이든, 소 떼든 양 떼든 아무것도 먹지 말아야 하오. 풀도 뜯어 먹지 말고 물도 마시지 말아야 하오.	And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8	사람도 짐승도 거친 천을 걸치고 힘을 다해 하나님을 불러야 하오. 사람마다 자신의 나쁜 길에서부터 돌아서고, 자신의 손으로 저지르는 폭행을 멈춰야 하오.	But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
9	누가 알겠소, 하나님이 돌이켜 뜻을 거두어들이실지, 뜨거운 분노에서 돌이키실지, 그래서 우리가 망하지 않게 될지?”	Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
10	하나님은 그들이 어떻게 하는지 보셨다. 그들이 자신들의 나쁜 길에서부터 돌아서는 것을 보신 것이다. 그러자 하나님은 그들에게 내릴 것이라 말씀하신 재난에 대해 뜻을 거두어들이시고, 내리지 않으셨다.	And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
