1	엘리야가 아합을 만나다 많은 날이 지났다. 3년째 되던 해에 여호와께서 엘리야에게 말씀하셨다. “가서 아합에게 나타나라. 내가 땅에 비를 내릴 것이다.”	And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
2	엘리야는 아합에게 나타나려고 가고 있었다. 그때 사마리아에는 기근이 엄청났다.	And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.
3	아합은 왕궁을 맡은 오바댜를 불렀다. 오바댜는 여호와를 깊이 두려워하는 사람이었다.	And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly:
4	이세벨이 여호와의 예언자들을 마구 죽이고 있을 때의 일이다. 오바댜는 예언자 100명을 데려다가 50명씩 동굴에 숨겨 두고 그들에게 빵과 물을 대 주었다.	For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
5	아합이 오바댜에게 말했다. “나라 안을 다니면서 모든 샘과 모든 마른시내로 가 보시오. 혹시 풀을 찾으면 말과 노새를 살아 있게 할 수 있을 것이오. 우리는 짐승들이 죽어 나가지 않게 할 수 있소.”	And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
6	그들은 나라를 나눠서 돌아다녔다. 아합이 혼자서 한 길로 갔고, 오바댜도 혼자서 다른 길로 갔다.	So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7	오바댜가 길을 가고 있을 때였다. 갑자기 엘리야가 그의 앞에 있었다. 오바댜는 그를 알아보고 엎드렸다. “엘리야 예언자님이시죠?”	And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?
8	엘리야가 그에게 말했다. “그렇소. 가서 그대의 주인에게 ‘엘리야가 왔습니다.’ 하고 말하시오!”	And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
9	그러자 오바댜가 말했다. “내가 무슨 죄를 짓기라도 했단 말입니까? 저를 아합의 손에 넘겨주어 죽이려 하시는군요.	And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?
10	예언자님의 하나님 여호와께서 살아 계심을 걸고 분명히 말씀드립니다. 나의 윗분이 예언자님을 찾으라고 사람들을 보내지 않은 민족이나 나라가 없습니다. 그들이 ‘없습니다.’ 하고 말하면 그 나라나 민족한테 예언자님을 본 적이 없다고 맹세하도록 했습니다.	As the Lord thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
11	지금 예언자님은 말씀하십니다. ‘가서 그대의 주인에게, 「엘리야가 왔습니다.」 하고 말하시오!’라고요.	And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
12	그러나 내가 예언자님을 떠나간 다음, 여호와의 영이 예언자님을 내가 모르는 곳으로 데려가실 것입니다. 그러면 내가 가서 아합에게 말하더라도 아합은 예언자님을 못 찾을 것이고, 그가 나를 죽일 것입니다. 저는 어려서부터 여호와를 두려워했던 사람입니다.	And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the Lord shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the Lord from my youth.
13	예언자님은 내가 무슨 일을 했는지 소문도 못 들으셨습니까? 이세벨이 여호와의 예언자들을 죽일 때였습니다. 내가 여호와의 예언자들 가운데 100명을 50명씩 50명씩 동굴에 숨겨 주었지요. 그들에게 빵과 물을 대 주었지요.	Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the Lord, how I hid an hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
14	지금 예언자님은 말씀하십니다. ‘가서 그대의 주인에게, 「엘리야가 왔습니다.」 하고 말하시오!’라고요. 그러면 그가 나를 죽일 것입니다.”	And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.
15	엘리야가 말했다. “내가 섬기는 전능하신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 걸고 맹세하겠소. 오늘 내가 아합에게 나타나겠소.”	And Elijah said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.
16	오바댜는 아합을 만나러 가서 그에게 말했다. 그러자 아합은 엘리야를 만나러 갔다.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17	아합이 엘리야를 보자, 아합은 그에게 말했다. “바로 그대가 이스라엘을 괴롭히는 사람이오?”	And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
18	엘리야가 대답했다. “나는 이스라엘을 괴롭히지 않았습니다. 임금님과 임금님의 아버지 쪽 집안이 그랬지요. 여호와의 명령을 저버리고 바알들을 따라갔으니까요.	And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.
19	이제 사람을 보내서 온 이스라엘을 나한테 모아 주세요, 갈멜산으로요. 바알의 예언자 450명과 아세라의 예언자 400명, 곧 이세벨의 식탁에서 먹는 사람들도요.”	Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.
20	엘리야가 바알의 예언자들과 맞서다 아합은 온 이스라엘 사람들에게 사람을 보내고 예언자들을 갈멜산으로 모았다.	So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
21	엘리야가 온 백성에게 다가가서 말했다. “여러분은 언제까지 양다리를 걸치고 있을 셈입니까? 여호와가 하나님이면 그를 따르고, 바알이 하나님이면 그를 따르세요.” 백성은 그에게 한 마디도 대답하지 않았다.	And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
22	엘리야가 백성에게 말했다. “여호와의 예언자는 나 혼자 남았습니다. 바알의 예언자는 450명입니다.	Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
23	우리에게 황소 두 마리를 가져오라 하세요. 그들이 황소 한 마리를 골라서 여러 조각으로 잘라 나무 위에 놓게 하세요. 그러나 불은 붙이지 못하게 하세요. 나도 황소 한 마리를 그렇게 해서 나무 위에 둘 겁니다. 불은 붙이지 않을 겁니다.	Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
24	여러분은 여러분의 신 이름을 부르고, 나는 여호와의 이름을 부를 겁니다. 불로 대답하는 신이 있다면, 그가 하나님입니다.” 온 백성이 대답했다. “좋은 말씀이십니다.”	And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
25	엘리야가 바알의 예언자들에게 말했다. “여러분이 황소 한 마리를 골라서 먼저 하시죠. 여러분이 수가 많으니까요. 그러고는 여러분의 신 이름을 불러 보세요. 그러나 불은 놓으시면 안 됩니다.”	And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
26	그들은 그들에게 주어진 황소를 가져다가 손질했다. 그러고는 아침부터 정오까지 바알의 이름을 불렀다. “바알이여, 우리에게 대답해 주세요!” 그러나 아무 소리도 없고 아무 대답도 없었다. 그들은 자신들이 만든 제단 둘레를 껑충거리며 돌았다.	And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
27	정오가 되었다. 엘리야는 그들을 놀리며 말했다. “큰 소리로 불러 보시죠. 그분은 신이잖아요. 생각에 빠져 계시거나, 볼일을 보고 계시거나, 길을 가고 계실 수 있으니까요. 어쩌면 주무시다 깨어나시겠죠.”	And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
28	그들은 큰 소리로 불렀다. 자신들이 해 오던 대로 칼과 창으로 자기 몸에다 상처를 냈다. 결국 그들은 피를 흘리기 시작했다.	And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
29	정오가 지난 다음 저녁 제사를 올릴 때까지 그들은 소리를 지르며 날뛰었다. 그러나 소리도 없고 대답도 없고 눈에 띄는 움직임도 없었다.	And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
30	엘리야가 온 백성에게 말했다. “이리 가까이 오세요.” 그러자 온 백성이 그에게 다가왔다. 엘리야는 무너뜨려진 여호와의 제단을 고쳐 세웠다.	And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.
31	엘리야는 돌 열두 개를 잡았다. 야곱의 아들들의 지파 수대로 한 것이다. 야곱에게는 여호와께서 “너의 이름은 이스라엘이 될 것이다.” 하고 말씀하셨다.	And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the Lord came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
32	그는 그 돌로 여호와의 이름을 기릴 제단을 세웠다. 제단 둘레에는 14리터의 씨앗이 들어갈 만한 고랑을 팠다.	And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
33	그는 나무를 벌여 놓고, 황소를 여러 조각으로 잘라 그 나무 위에다 올려놓았다.	And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
34	그러고서 말했다. “항아리 네 개에다 물을 채우세요. 그런 다음 다태우는제물(번제물)과 나무에다 부으세요.” 또 말했다. “다시 하세요.” 그들이 다시 그렇게 했다. 또 말했다. “세 번째로 하세요.” 그러자 그들은 세 번째로 그렇게 했다.	And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
35	물이 제단을 둘러 흘렀다. 고랑도 물로 가득 찼다.	And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
36	저녁 제사를 올릴 때였다. 엘리야 예언자가 가까이 와서 말했다. “여호와, 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘의 하나님! 오늘 알려 주십시오. 주님은 이스라엘에 계신 하나님이시라는 것을요. 제가 주님의 종이라는 것을요. 주님의 말씀을 따라 제가 이 일을 했다는 것을요.	And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
37	저에게 대답해 주십시오, 여호와여, 저에게 대답해 주십시오. 이 백성이 알게 해 주십시오. 주님이 여호와 하나님이시라는 것을요. 주님이 그들의 마음을 되돌리셨다는 것을요.”	Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
38	그러자 여호와의 불이 내렸다. 불은 다태우는제물(번제물)과 나무와 돌과 흙을 삼켰다. 고랑 안에 있던 물도 싹 핥아 버렸다.	Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39	온 백성이 보고 엎드려서 말했다. “여호와 그분이 하나님이십니다. 여호와 그분이 하나님이십니다.”	And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.
40	엘리야가 그들에게 말했다. “바알의 예언자들을 붙잡으세요. 그들 가운데 한 사람도 달아나지 못하게 하세요.” 백성은 그들을 붙잡았다. 엘리야는 그들을 기손 마른시내로 데리고 내려가 거기서 죽였다.	And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
41	비가 몰려오다 엘리야가 아합에게 말했다. “올라가서 먹고 마시세요. 비가 몰려오는 소리가 들리는군요.”	And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
42	그러자 아합은 올라가서 먹고 마셨다. 엘리야는 갈멜산 꼭대기로 올라갔다. 그는 땅 쪽으로 웅크리고 얼굴을 무릎 사이에 두었다.	So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
43	엘리야는 자기 종에게 말했다. “어서 올라가서 바다 쪽 좀 바라보아라.” 그가 올라가서 바라보았다. 그러고는 말했다. “아무것도 없습니다.” 엘리야가 “다시 갔다 와라.” 하고 말하기를 일곱 번 했다.	And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
44	일곱 번째가 되었다. 그 사람이 말했다. “보세요. 사람 손바닥만 한 작은 구름이 바다에서 올라오고 있어요.” 엘리야가 말했다. “올라가서 아합에게 이렇게 말해라. ‘말을 수레에 묶고 내려가십시오. 비 때문에 못 가게 되시면 안 되지요.’”	And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
45	그리고 얼마 있지 않아 구름이 일고 바람이 불며 하늘이 캄캄해졌다. 큰비가 퍼부었다. 아합은 수레를 타고 이스르엘로 떠나갔다.	And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46	여호와의 손이 엘리야와 함께했다. 그는 허리를 졸라매고 아합 앞에서 달리며 이스르엘로 들어가는 곳까지 갔다.	And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
