1	요아스가 다스리다 7세에 요아스가 임금이 되었다. 40년을 예루살렘에서 임금으로 다스렸다. 그의 어머니는 이름이 시비아이고 브엘세바 사람이다.	Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer–sheba.
2	여호야다 제사장이 살아 있는 동안 내내 요아스는 여호와께서 보시기에 올곧은 일을 했다.	And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3	여호야다가 그에게 두 여자를 아내로 맞이하게 해 주었고, 요아스는 여러 아들딸을 낳았다.	And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4	그런 다음에 요아스는 여호와의 집을 고쳐 드려야겠다는 마음이 들었다.	And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord.
5	그래서 제사장들과 레위 사람들을 모아 놓고 그들에게 말했다. “유다 도시들로 나가 온 이스라엘에서 해마다 돈을 거두어 여러분의 하나님의 집을 튼튼하게 하십시오. 여러분은 이 일을 서두르셔야 합니다.” 그런데 레위 사람들은 서두르지 않았다.	And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.
6	임금이 우두머리인 여호야다를 불러 그에게 말했다. “왜 레위 사람들에게 요구하지 않습니까, 여호와의 종 모세와 이스라엘 무리가 매긴 세금을 유다와 예루살렘에서 거두어 오라고요? 그 세금은 증언의 천막을 위한 것입니다.”	And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
7	못된 여자 아달랴의 아들들이 하나님의 집을 뚫고 들어가서, 여호와의 집의 거룩한 물건들마저도 모두 바알들을 위해 써 버렸기 때문이다.	For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim.
8	임금이 말을 하자 사람들이 상자 하나를 만들어 여호와의 집 문밖에 두었다.	And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the Lord.
9	그리고 유다와 예루살렘에 소리 내어 알렸다. 하나님의 종 모세가 광야에서 이스라엘에 매긴 세금을 여호와께로 거두어 오라는 것이었다.	And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
10	모든 관리들과 온 백성은 기뻐했다. 그들은 세금을 거두어 와서 상자에 가득 찰 때까지 던져 넣었다.	And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
11	그 상자를 레위 사람들이 들어다가 임금의 관리들에게 가져왔다. 그때 그들이 보고 돈이 많으면, 임금의 서기관과 우두머리 제사장의 사무관이 와서 그 상자를 비웠다. 그러고는 다시 들어다 제자리에 갖다 두었다. 날이면 날마다 그렇게 해서 돈을 많이 모았다.	Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
12	임금과 여호야다는 그 돈을 여호와의 집 돌보는 일을 맡아 하는 사람들에게 주었다. 그러자 그들은 돌장이들과 공예가들에게 삯을 주어 여호와의 집을 고치게 했다. 또한 쇠와 놋을 다루는 공예가들에게도 삯을 주어 여호와의 집을 튼튼하게 만들었다.	And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the Lord.
13	이 일꾼들이 일을 하자, 그들의 손을 통해서 고치는 일이 잘 진행되었다. 그들은 하나님의 집을 크기에 맞게 세우고 튼튼하게 했다.	So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
14	그들은 일을 다 마친 다음, 남은 돈을 임금과 여호야다 앞으로 가져와서 여호와의 집에서 쓸 그릇을 만들었다. 섬기는 일에 쓸 그릇과 다태우는제물(번제물)을 바칠 때 쓸 그릇, 접시, 금과 은으로 만든 그릇이었다. 여호야다가 살아 있는 동안 끊임없이 여호와의 집에서 다태우는제물(번제물)을 바쳤다.	And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the Lord, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.
15	요아스가 스가랴를 죽이다 여호야다가 늙고 나이가 차서 죽었다. 죽을 때 나이가 130세였다.	But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
16	사람들은 그를 다윗의 도시에 임금들과 함께 묻어 주었다. 그가 이스라엘에서 하나님과 그분의 집에 좋은 일을 했기 때문이다.	And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
17	여호야다가 죽은 뒤에 유다의 지도자들이 와서 임금에게 엎드려 절했다. 그때 임금이 그들의 말을 들었다.	Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
18	그들은 여호와의 집과 자기네 조상들의 하나님을 버리고 아세라 말뚝들과 우상들을 섬겼다. 그러자 그들이 저지른 이 잘못 때문에 유다와 예루살렘 위에 노여움이 내렸다.	And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
19	여호와는 그들 가운데 예언자들을 보내어 여호와에게 돌아오라고 하셨다. 예언자들이 그들을 거슬러 증언했지만 그들은 귀 기울이지 않았다.	Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
20	하나님이 여호야다 제사장의 아들 스가랴에게 성령의 두루마기를 입히시자, 그가 백성 위로 높이 서서 그들에게 말했다. “하나님이 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘어째서 너희는 여호와의 명령을 어기고 있느냐? 그래서 잘못되는 것이다.’ 여러분이 여호와를 버려서 여호와도 여러분을 버리신 것입니다.”	And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.
21	그러자 사람들이 그를 거슬러 일을 꾸몄다. 임금의 명령에 따라 여호와의 집 뜰 안에서 그를 돌로 쳐 죽였다.	And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.
22	요아스 임금은 스가랴의 아버지 여호야다가 자기에게 베풀어 준 한결같은 사랑을 기억하지 않고, 그의 아들을 죽인 것이다. 스가랴가 죽으면서 말했다. “여호와께서 보시고 갚아 주시기를.”	Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it.
23	요아스가 죽다 해가 바뀔 무렵에 시리아 군대가 요아스를 거슬러 올라왔다. 그들이 유다와 예루살렘으로 왔다. 그러고는 백성 가운데 있던 백성의 지도자들을 모두 죽이고, 빼앗은 물건을 다마스쿠스 임금에게 모두 보내 버렸다.	And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
24	시리아 군대가 몇 안 되는 사람을 데리고 왔지만, 여호와께서는 그들 손에 엄청나게 큰 군대를 넘기셨다. 이들이 여호와 자기네 조상들의 하나님을 버렸기 때문이다. 그래서 그들이 요아스에게 형벌을 내린 것이었다.	For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
25	그들은 그가 크게 다친 대로 내버려두고 떠났다. 그때 그의 신하들이 그를 거슬러 일을 꾸몄다. 여호야다 제사장의 아들이 쏟은 피 때문이었다. 그들은 그가 침대에 누워 있을 때 그를 죽였다. 그가 죽자 사람들이 그를 다윗의 도시에 묻었다. 그러나 임금들의 무덤에 묻어 주지는 않았다.	And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
26	그를 거슬러 일을 꾸민 사람들은 암몬 여자 시므앗의 아들 사밧과 모압 여자 시므릿의 아들 여호사밧이었다.	And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
27	그의 아들들에 관한 이야기, 그를 꾸짖은 많은 말씀, 하나님의 집을 새로 일으킨 일, 보라, 이것들이 임금들의 기록을 풀이한 글에 적혀 있지 않은가. 그의 아들 아마샤가 그를 이어 임금이 되었다.	Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
