1	스마야가 여호와의 말씀을 전하다 르호보암은 예루살렘으로 돌아온 다음, 유다와 베냐민 집안의 사람들 180,000명을 모았다. 전쟁에 나갈 만한 뛰어난 사람들이었다. 이스라엘과 맞서 싸워 나라를 르호보암에게 되돌리려는 것이었다.	And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
2	그런데 여호와께서 스마야라는 하나님의 사람에게 말씀하셨다.	But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
3	“솔로몬의 아들인 유다 임금 르호보암에게 말해 주어라. 유다와 베냐민에 있는 온 이스라엘에게도 말해 주어라.	Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
4	‘여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 「올라가지 마라. 너희 형제들과 싸우지 마라. 저마다 자기 집으로 돌아가거라. 일이 이렇게 된 것은 내가 뜻한 것이다.」’” 그들은 여호와의 말씀을 듣고, 여로보암에게 가던 길에서 되돌아왔다.	Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
5	르호보암이 유다 도시들을 요새로 세우다 르호보암은 예루살렘에 살면서 유다의 도시들을 요새로 세웠다.	And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.
6	그는 베들레헴과 에담과 드고아를 세웠다.	He built even Beth–lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7	벳술과 소고와 아둘람도 세웠다.	And Beth–zur, and Shoco, and Adullam,
8	가드와 마레사와 시프도 세웠다.	And Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9	아도라임과 라기스와 아세가도 세웠다.	And Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10	소라와 아얄론과 헤브론도 세웠다. 이 도시들은 유다와 베냐민 땅에 요새로 만든 도시들이었다.	And Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities.
11	그는 요새들을 굳건히 했다. 거기에다 책임자를 두고, 먹을거리와 기름과 포도주를 보관하는 창고도 두었다.	And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.
12	도시마다 방패와 창을 주어 매우 튼튼하게 지켰다. 이렇게 유다와 베냐민은 그의 것이 되었다.	And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
13	제사장들과 레위 사람들이 유다로 돌아오다 온 이스라엘에 있는 제사장들과 레위 사람들이 자기 지역을 떠나와서 그의 편에 섰다.	And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts.
14	레위 사람들은 자기네 목초지와 소유지를 버리고 유다와 예루살렘으로 왔다. 여로보암과 그의 아들들이 그들을 밀쳐 내어 여호와를 섬기는 제사장 일을 하지 못하게 했기 때문이었다.	For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office unto the Lord:
15	그는 제사장들을 세워 높은곳(산당)과 숫염소 귀신들과 자기가 만든 송아지들을 섬기게 했던 것이다.	And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.
16	또한 그들을 따라 이스라엘의 모든 지파에서부터 사람들이 왔다. 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님을 찾으려고 마음먹은 사람들이었다. 여호와 그들의 조상들의 하나님께 희생제물을 드리러 예루살렘에 온 것이다.	And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the Lord God of their fathers.
17	그들은 유다 왕국을 튼튼히 했고 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암을 굳세게 했다. 3년 동안 그렇게 할 수 있었다. 그들이 다윗과 솔로몬의 길을 3년 동안 걸어갔기 때문이다.	So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
18	르호보암의 가족 르호보암이 마할랏을 아내로 맞이했다. 마할랏은 다윗의 아들 여리못과 이새의 아들 엘리압의 딸인 아비하일 사이에서 태어났다.	And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19	마할랏이 낳은 아들은 여우스, 스마랴, 사함이다.	Which bare him children; Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham.
20	다음 아내로 르호보암은 압살롬의 딸 마아가를 맞이했다. 그는 아비야, 앗대, 시사, 슬로밋을 낳았다.	And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; which bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21	르호보암은 압살롬의 딸 마아가를 모든 아내들과 다른 아내들보다 더 사랑했다. 사실 그에게는 아내 18명과 다른 아내 60명이 있었고 아들 28명과 딸 60명이 있었다.	And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and threescore daughters.)
22	르호보암은 마아가의 아들 아비야를 으뜸으로 삼아 형제들 가운데 우두머리가 되게 했다. 그를 임금으로 세우려 했던 것이다.	And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.
23	그는 슬기를 발휘하여 자기 아들들을 유다와 베냐민의 온 땅과 요새로 만든 도시들로 흩어 보냈다. 그들에게 양식을 넉넉히 주었고, 아내들도 많이 구해 주었다.	And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.
