1	아이성을 빼앗다 여호와께서 여호수아에게 또 말씀하셨다. “두려워하지도 말고 겁먹지도 마라. 온 군대를 거느리고 일어나서 아이로 올라가라. 보아라, 내가 아이의 임금과 그의 백성과 도시와 땅을 너의 손에 넘겨주었다.	And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
2	아이와 그 임금에게는 여리고와 그 임금에게 했듯이 하여라. 다만 이번에 빼앗는 물건과 집짐승은 너희 것으로 돌려도 괜찮다. 너희는 그 도시 뒤쪽에 병사를 숨겨 두어라.”	And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.
3	여호수아가 일어났다. 온 군대를 거느리고 아이로 올라가려는 것이었다. 여호수아가 용사 30,000명을 뽑아 밤에 보냈다.	So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
4	그러면서 그들에게 명령을 내렸다. “이제 그대들은 그 도시 뒤쪽으로 가서 숨어 기다려라. 그 도시에서 너무 멀리 떨어져 있지는 마라. 모두 준비하고 있도록 해라.	And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:
5	나는 나와 같이 있는 군대를 다 데리고 그 도시로 다가가겠다. 그 도시 사람들이 이전처럼 우리를 맞아 싸우러 나오면, 우리는 그들 앞에서 달아날 것이다.	And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,
6	그러면 그들이 우리를 따라 나올 것이다. 마침내 우리가 그들을 꾀어 그 도시에서 완전히 빠져나오게 할 것이다. 그들은 이전처럼 우리가 자기들 앞에서 달아난다고 생각할 것이기 때문이다. 우리가 그들 앞에서 달아날 것이다.	(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.
7	그러면 그대들은 숨어 있던 데서 일어나서 그 도시를 빼앗아야 한다. 여호와 그대들의 하나님이 그 도시를 그대들의 손에 넘겨주셨다.	Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
8	그 도시를 빼앗으면 그 도시를 불태우도록 해라. 여호와의 말씀대로 하도록 해라. 잘 들었느냐? 이것이 내가 그대들에게 내린 명령이다.”	And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.
9	여호수아가 그들을 보냈다. 그들은 숨을 곳으로 가서 베델과 아이 사이 곧 아이 서쪽에 머물렀다. 여호수아는 그날 밤에 병사들 가운데서 묵었다.	Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
10	여호수아는 아침 일찍 일어나서 백성을 점검해 보고, 백성 앞에 서서 이스라엘 원로들과 함께 아이로 올라갔다.	And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
11	여호수아가 거느린 온 군대가 올라가서 그 도시 앞에 이르렀다. 그들은 아이 북쪽에 진을 쳤다. 진을 친 곳과 아이 사이에는 골짜기가 있었다.	And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.
12	여호수아가 5,000명쯤을 뽑아 아이와 베델 사이 곧 아이 서쪽에 숨겨 두었다.	And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of the city.
13	그 도시의 북쪽에는 군대를 온 진영과 함께 두었고, 도시의 서쪽에는 후위 부대를 두었다. 여호수아는 그날 밤에 그 골짜기로 갔다.	And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
14	아이 임금이 이를 보았다. 그 도시 사람들은 서둘러 일찌감치 나와서 이스라엘을 맞아 싸우려 했다. 아이 임금은 자기의 온 군대를 거느리고 아라바 앞에 정해 둔 곳으로 나왔다. 도시 뒤쪽에 적군이 숨어 있는 줄은 알지 못했다.	And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.
15	여호수아와 온 이스라엘은 그들에게 져서 광야 길로 달아나는 척했다.	And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
16	아이 안에서는 사람들을 다 불러 모아 이스라엘 사람들을 뒤쫓게 했다. 그들은 꼬임에 빠져 여호수아를 뒤쫓느라고 그 도시에서 빠져나왔다.	And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
17	아이와 베델에는 아무도 남아 있지 않았다. 이스라엘을 뒤쫓아 나오지 않은 사람이 없었다. 그들은 성문을 열어 둔 채 도시를 떠나 이스라엘을 뒤쫓았다.	And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth–el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
18	그때 여호와께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. “네 손에 든 창을 아이 쪽으로 내밀어라! 내가 그 도시를 너의 손에 넘겨주겠다.” 여호수아가 손에 든 창을 그 도시 쪽으로 내밀었다.	And the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
19	그가 손을 내밀자, 숨어 있던 병사들이 서둘러 자리에서 일어나서 달렸다. 그들은 그 도시 안으로 들어가서 도시를 빼앗아 서둘러 불태웠다.	And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
20	아이 사람들이 뒤돌아보았다. 이런, 도시에서 연기가 하늘로 치솟고 있는 것이 아닌가! 그들은 이쪽저쪽 어느 쪽으로도 달아날 수 없었다. 광야로 달아나던 이스라엘 병사들이 뒤쫓던 사람들에게로 돌아섰던 것이다.	And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
21	여호수아와 온 이스라엘은 숨어 있던 병사들이 그 도시를 빼앗았다는 것을 알아차렸다. 도시에서 연기가 치솟고 있었다. 그래서 그들은 돌아서서 아이 사람들에게 달려들었다.	And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
22	숨어 있던 병사들도 도시에서 나와 아이 사람들과 맞서 싸웠다. 그리하여 아이 사람들은 이스라엘 군대 사이에 끼었다. 앞쪽에도 병사들이, 뒤쪽에도 병사들이 있었다. 이스라엘 사람들이 그들을 쳐부수었다. 그 가운데서 끝내 살아남거나 빠져나온 사람이 하나도 없었다.	And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
23	아이 임금은 붙잡혀서 여호수아에게 끌려왔다.	And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24	이스라엘은 자기들이 뒤쫓기던 광야 들판에서 아이 주민들을 모조리 죽였다. 아이 사람들은 모두 날카로운 칼에 맞아 죽었다. 온 이스라엘이 아이로 돌아와서 칼로 그 도시를 쳐부수었다.	And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
25	그날 쓰러진 사람들은 남녀가 모두 12,000명이었다. 모두 아이 사람들이었다.	And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
26	아이에 사는 모든 사람들을 완전히 없애 버릴 때까지 여호수아는 창을 든 채 내민 손을 거두어들이지 않았다.	For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27	다만 그 도시에서 빼앗은 집짐승과 물건은 여호와께서 여호수아에게 명령하실 때 하신 말씀대로 이스라엘 백성에게로 돌렸다.	Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua.
28	여호수아는 아이를 불태워 영영 황폐한 폐허 언덕으로 만들어 버렸고, 그것이 오늘까지 그러하다.	And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.
29	아이 임금은 저녁때까지 나무에 매달아 두었다. 해 질 때에 여호수아가 명령하여 나무에서 시체를 내리고서는, 도시의 성문 출입구에 던져 그 위에 큰 돌무더기를 쌓게 했다. 그것이 오늘까지 있다.	And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
30	에발산에 제단을 만들다 그때 여호수아는 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님을 위하여 에발산에 제단을 만들었다.	Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal,
31	여호와의 종 모세가 이스라엘 사람들에게 명령한 대로, 또 모세의 가르침 책에 적어 둔 대로, 쇠 연장을 대지 않은, 다듬지 않은 돌로 만든 제단이었다. 그 위에서 여호와께 다태우는제물(번제물)을 올려 드리고 평화제물(화목제물)을 잡아 바쳤다.	As Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
32	거기서 여호수아는 모세의 가르침을 그 돌 위에 옮겨 적어 두었다. 그 가르침은 모세가 써서 이스라엘 사람들 앞에 둔 것이었다.	And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
33	온 이스라엘과 원로들과 행정관들과 재판관들은 언약상자의 이쪽과 저쪽에 섰다. 여호와의 언약상자를 멘 레위 사람 제사장들 앞에 섰다. 나그네들도 토박이들도 그렇게 했다. 절반은 그리심산을 바라보고 절반은 에발산을 바라보고 섰다. 여호와의 종 모세가 이전에 이스라엘 백성을 축복하려고 명령한 대로였다.	And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
34	그러고 나서 가르침 책에 기록된 대로 여호수아가 복과 저주를 가르치는 말씀을 모두 읽어 주었다.	And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
35	모세가 명령한 말씀 가운데서 여호수아가 읽어 주지 않은 말씀이 없었다. 여호수아는 온 이스라엘 무리와 여자와 어린이와 그들 가운데 사는 나그네들 앞에서 읽어 주었다.	There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
