1	여호와께 바칠 물건을 아간이 훔치다 이스라엘 사람들이 신의를 저버리고, 여호와께 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건에 손을 대었다. 여호와께 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건을 아간이 가져간 것이다. 아간은 갈미의 아들이자 삽디의 손자이자 세라흐의 증손자로 유다 지파 사람이었다. 여호와께서 이스라엘 사람들을 향한 노여움으로 불타오르셨다.	But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.
2	여리고에서 여호수아가 사람들을 베델 동쪽 베다웬 옆의 아이로 보내면서 말했다. “올라가서 그 땅을 다니며 살펴보고 오세요!” 그 사람들이 올라가서 아이를 두루 살펴보았다.	And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth–aven, on the east side of Beth–el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.
3	그러고는 여호수아에게 돌아와 보고했다. “온 백성이 올라가지 않아도 됩니다. 2,000명이나 3,000명만 올라가도 아이를 쳐부술 수 있습니다. 온 백성이 번거롭게 그리로 가지 않아도 됩니다. 그들은 수가 얼마 되지 않습니다.”	And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
4	백성 가운데서 3,000명쯤이 아이로 올라갔다. 그러나 그들은 아이 사람들이 무서워서 달아났다.	So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
5	달아난 사람들 가운데서 36명쯤을 아이 사람들이 쳐 죽였다. 아이 사람들이 성문 앞에서 그들을 뒤쫓았는데 스바림까지 이르러 산비탈에서 그들을 쳐 죽였다. 그 바람에 백성의 심장이 덜컥 내려앉았다.	And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.
6	여호수아가 옷을 잡아 찢고 여호와의 상자(궤) 앞에 엎드려 저녁때까지 있었다. 이스라엘 원로들도 그렇게 했다. 또 그들은 자기 머리 위로 흙먼지를 뿌렸다.	And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.
7	여호수아가 아뢰었다. “아, 주 여호와여! 무슨 까닭으로 이 백성에게 요르단강을 건너게 하셨습니까? 우리를 아모리 사람들의 손에 넘겨주어 망하게 하시려는 것입니까? 우리가 차라리 요르단강 건너편에서 자리 잡도록 해 주셨더라면요!	And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!
8	주제넘은 말씀입니다만, 주님, 이스라엘이 적들에게 등을 보이고 달아난 마당에 제가 무슨 말씀을 드리겠습니까?	O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!
9	가나안 사람들과 이 땅에 사는 모든 사람들이 이 소식을 들을 것입니다. 그러면 그들이 우리를 에워싸고 이 땅에서 우리의 이름을 끊어 버릴 것입니다. 주님의 큰 이름은 어떻게 하시렵니까?”	For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?
10	여호와께서 여호수아에게 대답하셨다. “일어나라. 무슨 까닭으로 네가 엎드려 있는 것이냐?	And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11	이스라엘이 죄를 지었다. 그들이 나와 맺은 언약을 어겼다. 내가 그들에게 명령한 것들을 말이다. 나에게 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건을 가져가기도 하고 훔쳐 가기도 했다. 숨기기도 하고 자기들의 살림살이 가운데 두기도 했다.	Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
12	그래서 이스라엘 사람들이 적들을 견뎌 낼 수 없어서 적들에게 등을 보이고 달아나야 했다. 이스라엘 사람들이야말로 나에게 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 백성이 되었기 때문이다. 나에게 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 하는 것을 너희 가운데서 없애 버리지 않으면, 내가 더는 너희와 함께하지 않겠다.	Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.
13	일어나라. 백성을 거룩하게 하여라. 이렇게 일러 주어라. ‘스스로 거룩하게 하십시오, 내일을 위해서요! 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 「나에게 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건이 네 가운데 있다, 이스라엘아! 나에게 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건을 네 가운데서 없애 버릴 때까지 너의 적들을 견뎌 낼 수 없을 것이다.」	Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
14	여러분은 내일 아침에 지파별로 나아오도록 하십시오. 여호와께 제비 뽑힌 지파는 가문별로 나아오도록 하십시오. 여호와께 제비 뽑힌 가문은 집안별로 나아오도록 하십시오. 여호와께 제비 뽑힌 집안의 남자들은 한 사람씩 나아오도록 하십시오.	In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.
15	여호와께 바쳐서 완전히 없애 버려야 할 물건을 가져간 것으로 제비 뽑힌 사람과 그에게 딸린 것은 모조리 불태우도록 하십시오. 여호와께 한 언약을 어기고 이스라엘에서 어처구니없는 짓을 저질렀기 때문입니다.’”	And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.
16	다음날 아침에 여호수아는 일찍 일어나서, 이스라엘에게 지파별로 나아오게 했다. 제비 뽑힌 것은 유다 지파였다.	So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:
17	유다 지파의 가문들을 나아오게 했다. 그 가운데서 제비 뽑힌 것은 세라흐 가문이었다. 세라흐 가문의 남자들을 나아오게 했다. 그 가운데서 제비 뽑힌 남자는 삽디였다.	And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:
18	삽디 집안의 남자들을 나아오게 했다. 그 가운데서 제비 뽑힌 남자는 아간이었다. 아간은 갈미의 아들이자 삽디의 손자이자 세라흐의 증손자로 유다 지파 사람이었다.	And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19	여호수아가 아간에게 말했다. “이보시오, 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께 영광을 돌리고, 그분께 감사 찬양을 드리시오. 그대가 무슨 짓을 했는지 나에게 숨김없이 말하시오.”	And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20	아간이 여호수아에게 대답했다. “정말 제가 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께 죄를 지었습니다. 제가 이런 짓을 했습니다.	And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21	빼앗은 물건 가운데서 제 눈에 들어온 것이 있었습니다. 좋은 시날 외투 한 벌, 2.4킬로그램 되는 은, 무게가 600그램 되는 금덩이 한 개입니다. 이것들을 제가 넘보다가 가져가서, 곧 보시겠습니다만, 저의 천막 가운데 땅속에 파묻어 놓았습니다. 은을 맨 아래에 두었습니다.”	When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22	여호수아가 심부름꾼들을 보냈다. 그들은 그 천막으로 달려갔다. 아, 여러 물건이 천막 안에 파묻혀 있고, 맨 아래에 은이 있지 않은가!	So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23	그들이 그 여러 물건을 천막 가운데서 파내어 여호수아와 온 이스라엘 사람들에게 가져와서는 여호와 앞에 쏟아 놓았다.	And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24	여호수아는 세라흐의 증손자 아간을, 그 은과 외투와 금덩이와 함께 끌어냈다. 그의 아들딸과 소와 나귀와 양과 천막과 그에게 딸린 것도 모조리 끌어냈다. 온 이스라엘이 여호수아와 함께했다. 그들은 아간과 그 모든 것을 이끌고 아골 골짜기로 올라갔다.	And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25	여호수아가 말했다. “그대가 우리를 불행으로 몰아넣은 까닭이 무엇이오? 오늘은 여호와께서 그대를 불행으로 몰아넣으실 것이오.” 온 이스라엘이 아간을 돌로 쳐서 죽였다. 그에게 딸린 물건은 모조리 불태우고, 그에게 딸린 모든 사람에게 돌을 던져 죽였다.	And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26	그러고는 그 위에 큰 돌무더기를 쌓았는데, 오늘에도 볼 수 있다. 그제야 여호와께서 뜨거운 분노를 푸셨다. 그리하여 그곳 이름을 오늘까지 아골 골짜기라고 부른다.	And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
