1	천사가 기드온에게 나타나다 이스라엘 사람들이 여호와께서 보시기에 나쁜 짓을 저질렀다. 그리하여 여호와께서 그들을 미디안의 손에 넘겨주셨다. 7년이 지났다.	And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
2	미디안의 손이 이스라엘을 내리눌렀다. 미디안 때문에 이스라엘 사람들은 자신들이 피할 구덩이를 산에 만들었다. 동굴과 요새도 만들었다.	And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
3	이스라엘이 씨를 뿌리면 미디안이 올라왔다. 아말렉과 동쪽 사람들도 왔다. 그들이 올라와서 이스라엘을 덮쳤다.	And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
4	그들이 이스라엘에 진을 치고는 그 땅의 열매를 못 먹게 만들었다. 가자에 이르기까지 그렇게 했다. 또 먹을 것을 이스라엘에 남겨 두지 않았다. 양과 소와 나귀도 남겨 두지 않았다.	And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
5	사람뿐만 아니라 집짐승도 몰고 천막도 메고 올라왔다. 메뚜기 떼처럼 몰려왔다. 사람과 낙타가 셀 수 없이 많았다. 그들이 와서 그 땅을 망가뜨렸다.	For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
6	이스라엘은 미디안 때문에 아주 보잘것없어졌다. 그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 여호와께 도와 달라고 소리쳤다.	And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.
7	이스라엘 사람들이 미디안 때문에 여호와께 도와 달라고 소리쳤을 때였다.	And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites,
8	여호와께서 예언자 한 사람을 이스라엘 사람들에게 보내셨다. 그가 그들에게 말했다. “여호와 이스라엘의 하나님이 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘내가 너희를 이집트에서 올라오게 했다. 노예살이하던 집에서 너희를 이끌어 냈다.	That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
9	이집트의 손에서, 너희를 괴롭히는 모든 사람의 손에서 너희를 빼내어 주었다. 그들을 너희 앞에서 내쫓고는 그들의 땅을 너희에게 주었다.	And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
10	너희에게 말해 주었다, 내가 여호와 너희의 하나님이라고. 또 너희가 아모리 사람들의 땅에 살고 있지만, 그들의 신들을 두려워하지는 말아야 한다고. 그러나 너희는 내 목소리를 듣지 않았다.’”	And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
11	여호와의 천사가 와서 오브라에 있는 참나무 아래에 앉았다. 아비에셀 사람 요아스에게 딸린 나무였다. 그때 요아스의 아들 기드온이 포도즙 짜는 틀에서 밀알을 털어 내고 있었다. 미디안 사람들이 모르게 하려는 것이었다.	And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi–ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
12	여호와의 천사가 그에게 나타나 말했다. “여호와께서 그대와 함께하십니다, 용감한 사람인 그대!”	And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
13	기드온이 천사에게 말했다. “주제넘은 말씀입니다만, 선생님! 여호와께서 우리와 함께하시는데, 무슨 까닭으로 이 모든 일이 우리에게 닥쳤습니까? 어디에 있습니까, 우리 조상들이 우리에게 이야기해 준 그 모든 놀라운 일들은요? ‘이집트에서 우리를 올라오게 하신 분은 여호와가 아니시냐?’ 하면서 조상들이 이야기해 주었습니다. 그런데 지금은 여호와께서 우리를 저버리시고 미디안의 손에 넘겨주셨습니다.”	And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
14	여호와께서 기드온에게로 향하시고는 말씀하셨다. “가라, 네게 있는 이 힘으로! 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구해 내라! 내가 너를 보내는 것이 아니냐?”	And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
15	기드온이 여호와께 말씀드렸다. “주제넘은 말씀입니다만, 주님! 제가 무엇으로 이스라엘을 구해 내겠습니까? 보십시오, 저희 가문은 므낫세 가운데서 가장 보잘것없습니다. 게다가 저야말로 저희 아버지 쪽 집안에서 가장 작은 사람입니다.”	And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.
16	여호와께서 그에게 또 말씀하셨다. “내가 너와 함께할 것이므로 네가 미디안을 물리칠 것이다, 마치 한 사람을 물리치듯이.”	And the Lord said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
17	기드온이 그분께 또 말씀드렸다. “제가 주님 눈에 든다면, 저와 말씀 나누시는 분이 주님이시라는 증표를 제게 하나 주십시오.	And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
18	이곳을 떠나지 말아 주십시오. 제가 예물을 가지고 주님께 돌아와 예물을 주님 앞에 놓아 드릴 때까지요.” 그분이 대답하셨다. “내가 꼭 머물러 있겠다, 네가 돌아올 때까지.”	Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
19	기드온이 가서 어린 염소로 먹을 것을 만들고, 밀가루 22리터로 누룩없는빵(무교병)을 만들었다. 살코기를 바구니에 넣고, 국물을 냄비에 담아, 참나무 아래에 있는 그분에게 가져다드렸다.	And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
20	하나님의 천사가 기드온에게 말했다. “살코기와 누룩없는빵(무교병)은 가져다가 저 바위 위에 차려 놓고, 국물은 부으세요!” 기드온이 그렇게 했다.	And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
21	여호와의 천사가 손에 든 지팡이 끝을 뻗어서 살코기와 누룩없는빵(무교병)에 댔다. 그러자 바위에서 불길이 치솟아 살코기와 누룩없는빵(무교병)을 삼켜 버렸다. 여호와의 천사는 기드온의 눈앞에서 사라져 버렸다.	Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.
22	그제야 기드온은 그가 여호와의 천사인 줄 깨달았다. 기드온이 말씀드렸다. “아, 주 여호와여! 그러고 보니 제가 여호와의 천사를 만난 것이군요. 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하고서요.”	And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face.
23	여호와께서 그에게 또 말씀하셨다. “평화가 너에게 깃들기를! 두려워하지 마라. 죽지 않을 것이다.”	And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
24	기드온은 거기에 여호와를 위한 제단을 만들고는 그 제단을 여호와샬롬이라고 불렀다. 그 제단은 오늘까지 아비에셀 사람의 땅 오브라에 있다.	Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah–shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.
25	기드온이 바알 제단을 무너뜨리다 그날 밤 여호와께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. “너의 아버지에게 있는 수소 한 마리를 끌고 오너라. 또 7년 된 둘째 수소 한 마리를 끌어오너라. 그러고는 너의 아버지에게 있는 바알 제단을 무너뜨리고, 그 곁에 있는 아세라 말뚝을 베어 버려라.	And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:
26	규정에 따라 이 피난처 꼭대기에 여호와 너의 하나님에게 제사드릴 제단을 돌로 쌓아 만들어라. 그러고는 둘째 수소를 끌어다가 다태우는제물(번제물)로 바쳐라, 네가 베어 버린 아세라 말뚝 나무를 사용해서.”	And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
27	기드온은 그의 종들 가운데서 열 명을 데리고 와서 여호와께서 그에게 말씀하신 대로 했다. 자신의 아버지 쪽 집안과 그 도시 사람들이 두려워서 낮에는 하지 않고 밤에 했다.	Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
28	그 도시 사람들이 아침에 일찍 일어나서 보았다. 아, 바알 제단은 무너지고, 그 곁에 있던 아세라 말뚝은 베어져 있는 것이 아닌가! 또 둘째 수소가 새로 만든 제단 위에 올려져 있는 것이 아닌가!	And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.
29	그들이 서로 말했다. “누가 이런 짓을 저질렀는가?” 두루 물어보고 알아보고 나서 그들이 말했다. “요아스의 아들 기드온이 이런 짓을 저질렀구나.”	And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
30	그 도시의 사람들이 요아스에게 말했다. “당신 아들을 끌어내 주세요! 그는 죽어야 해요. 바알 제단을 무너뜨리고 그 곁에 있던 아세라 말뚝을 베어 버렸다니까요.”	Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.
31	요아스가 자기 곁에 서 있는 모든 사람에게 대답했다. “여러분이 나서서 바알을 위해 다투는 것이오? 여러분이 나서서 바알을 구해 내겠다고 말이오? 바알을 위해 다투는 사람은 아침이 되기 전에 죽을 것이오. 바알이 하나님이라면, 스스로 다툴 것이오. 자기의 제단이 무너졌으니까 말이오.”	And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.
32	누군가가 그날 기드온을 여룹바알이라 부르면서 말했다. “바알이 그와 다툴 것이다. 그가 바알 제단을 무너뜨렸으니까.”	Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
33	기드온이 싸울 사람들을 불러 모으다 온 미디안과 아말렉과 동쪽 사람들이 함께 모였다. 그들은 요르단강을 건너와서 이스르엘 골짜기에 진을 쳤다.	Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
34	그때 여호와께서 기드온에게 성령의 두루마기를 입히셨다. 기드온이 나팔을 불고 아비에셀을 불러 모아 자기 뒤를 따르게 했다.	But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi–ezer was gathered after him.
35	또 심부름꾼들을 온 므낫세에 보내어, 그들도 불러 모아 자기 뒤를 따르게 했다. 심부름꾼들을 아셀과 스불론과 납달리에도 보내어, 그들도 올라와서 기드온 일행을 맞이하게 했다.	And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
36	하나님의 뜻을 두 번이나 알아보다 기드온이 하나님께 말씀드렸다. “제 손으로 이스라엘을 구해 내게 하겠다고 주님이 말씀하셨지요. 그 말씀대로 하시겠다면,	And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
37	자, 제가 양털 더미를 여기 타작마당에 두겠습니다. 이슬이 그 더미에만 있고 온 땅이 말라 있으면, 제 손으로 이스라엘을 구해 내려 하신 줄 알겠습니다. 주님이 말씀하신 대로요.”	Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
38	그러자 그대로 되었다. 기드온이 다음날 일찍 일어나 양털 더미를 비틀어 짜 보았다. 꽉 누르자 그 더미에서 이슬이 흘러나와서 물이 사발에 가득 찼다.	And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
39	기드온이 하나님께 말씀드렸다. “저를 노여워하지 마십시오. 주제넘지만 한 번만 더 말씀드리겠습니다. 양털 더미로 한 번만 더 알아보게 해 주십시오. 더미만 말라 있고, 온 땅에는 이슬이 내려 있게 해 주십시오.”	And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
40	하나님이 그날 밤에 그렇게 해 주셨다. 양털 더미만 말라 있고, 온 땅에는 이슬이 내려 있었다.	And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
