1	유다와 시므온 집안이 가나안을 무찌르다 여호수아가 죽고 나서 이스라엘 사람들이 여호와께 여쭈었다. “우리 가운데서 맨 먼저 올라가 가나안 사람들과 싸울 사람은 누구입니까?”	Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2	여호와께서 대답하셨다. “유다가 올라가야 한다. 보라, 내가 그 땅을 유다의 손에 넘겨주었다.”	And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3	유다가 형 시므온에게 말했다. “제가 제비 뽑아 나누어 받은 땅으로 저와 함께 올라가서 가나안 사람들과 싸웁시다. 그러면 저도 형님과 함께 형님이 제비 뽑아 나누어 받은 땅으로 가겠습니다.” 그래서 시므온이 유다와 함께 갔다.	And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
4	유다가 올라갔다. 여호와께서 가나안 사람들과 브리스 사람들을 그들의 손에 넘겨주셨다. 그들은 베섹에서 10,000명을 쳐 죽였다.	And Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5	베섹에서 아도니베섹을 만나 그와 싸웠다. 가나안 사람들과 브리스 사람들을 물리쳤다.	And they found Adoni–bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6	아도니베섹이 달아나자, 그들이 그를 뒤쫓아 가서 붙잡아 그의 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 잘라 냈다.	But Adoni–bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7	아도니베섹이 말했다. “70명의 임금이 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락이 잘린 채로 내 밥상 아래에서 음식 부스러기를 주워 먹은 적이 있었다. 내가 한 그대로 하나님이 나에게 갚으시는구나.” 유다 사람들과 시므온 사람들은 그를 예루살렘으로 데려갔다. 그는 거기서 죽었다.	And Adoni–bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8	유다 사람들이 예루살렘에 쳐들어가서 그 도시를 빼앗았다. 사람들은 칼로 쳐 죽이고, 그 도시는 불태웠다.	Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9	그러고 나서는 유다 사람들이 내려가서 산지와 네게브와 세펠라에 살고 있는 가나안 사람들과 싸웠다.	And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10	유다 사람들이 헤브론에 살고 있는 가나안 사람들에게 갔다. 헤브론의 이전 이름은 기랴다르바였다. 유다 사람들은 세새와 아히만과 달매를 무찔렀다.	And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath–arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11	거기서부터 유다 사람들은 드빌에 살고 있는 사람들에게로 갔다. 드빌의 이전 이름은 기럇세벨이었다.	And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath–sepher:
12	갈렙이 말했다. “기럇세벨을 무찔러 빼앗는 사람에게는 내 딸 악사를 주어 아내로 삼게 하겠소.”	And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath–sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13	그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 기럇세벨을 빼앗았다. 그나스는 갈렙의 아우였다. 그래서 갈렙은 옷니엘에게 자신의 딸 악사를 주어 아내로 삼게 했다.	And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14	악사가 옷니엘에게 갈 때, 옷니엘이 그를 부추겨 자기 아버지에게 밭을 달라고 하게 했다. 악사가 나귀에서 내리자, 갈렙이 악사에게 “무슨 일이냐?” 하고 물었다.	And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15	악사가 대답했다. “저에게 축복의 선물을 주세요. 네게브 땅을 제게 주셨으니, 물이 솟는 샘들도 주세요.” 갈렙이 악사에게 위쪽 샘들과 아래쪽 샘들을 주었다.	And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16	모세의 장인은 가인 사람이었다. 그의 자손이 대추야자나무(종려나무) 도시에서부터 유다 사람들과 함께 아랏 남쪽에 있는 유다 광야로 올라갔다. 가인 사람들은 그곳으로 가서 백성과 함께 살았다.	And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17	유다 사람들은 시므온 사람들 곧 그의 형제 지파와 함께 가서 스밧에 살고 있는 가나안 사람들을 무찔렀다. 그들을 완전히 없애 버렸다. 그래서 그 도시의 이름을 호르마라 했다.	And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18	유다 사람들은 가자와 그 둘레 지역, 아스글론과 그 둘레 지역, 에그론과 그 둘레 지역을 빼앗았다.	Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19	여호와께서 유다 사람들과 함께 계셔서, 유다 사람들이 산지를 차지했다. 골짜기에 살고 있는 사람들은 쫓아내지 못했다. 그들에게는 쇠 전투수레가 있었기 때문이다.	And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20	갈렙은 헤브론을 받았다. 모세가 말한 대로였다. 갈렙은 거기서 아낙의 세 아들을 몰아냈다.	And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
21	예루살렘에 살고 있는 여부스 사람들은 베냐민 사람들이 몰아내지 못했다. 여부스 사람들은 베냐민 사람들과 함께 오늘까지 예루살렘에 살고 있다.	And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
22	요셉 집안이 베델을 무찌르다 요셉 집안의 사람들도 베델로 올라갔는데, 여호와께서 그들과 함께 계셨다.	And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth–el: and the Lord was with them.
23	요셉 집안의 사람들이 베델을 살펴보았다. 그 도시의 이전 이름은 루스였다.	And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth–el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
24	그렇게 지켜보던 사람들이 그 도시에서 사람이 나오는 것을 보고 그에게 말했다. “이 도시의 들머리를 우리에게 알려 주십시오. 그러면 우리도 당신에게 잘해 드리지요.”	And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
25	그 사람이 그들에게 그 도시의 들머리를 알려 주었다. 그들은 그 도시를 칼로 무찔렀다. 그렇지만 그 사람과 그의 가문은 놓아 보냈다.	And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
26	그 사람이 히타이트 사람들의 땅으로 가서 도시를 세우고는 그 이름을 루스라고 했다. 그 이름이 오늘까지 전해진다.	And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
27	이스라엘이 몰아내지 못한 사람들 므낫세 사람들은 벳스안과 그에 딸린 여러 마을의 사람들, 다아낙과 그에 딸린 여러 마을의 사람들을 몰아내지 못했다. 도르와 그에 딸린 여러 마을에 사는 사람들, 이블르암과 그에 딸린 여러 마을에 사는 사람들, 므깃도와 그에 딸린 여러 마을에 사는 사람들도 몰아내지 못했다. 그리하여 가나안 사람들이 마음을 단단히 먹고 이 땅에서 계속 살았다.	Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28	그러다가 이스라엘 사람들에게 힘이 생기자, 가나안 사람들을 부려 먹었다. 그러나 그들을 완전히 몰아내지는 않았다.	And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
29	에브라임 사람들은 게셀에 사는 가나안 사람들을 몰아내지 못했다. 그래서 가나안 사람들이 그들 가운데 곧 게셀에서 계속 살았다.	Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30	스불론 사람들은 기드론과 나할롤에 사는 사람들을 몰아내지 못했다. 그리하여 가나안 사람들이 그들 가운데 계속 살았다. 스불론 사람들이 그들을 부려 먹었다.	Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
31	아셀 사람들은 악고와 시돈에 사는 사람들, 아흘랍, 악십, 헬바, 아빅, 르홉 사람들을 몰아내지 못했다.	Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
32	아셀 사람들은 그 땅에 사는 가나안 사람들 가운데 살았다. 그들을 쫓아내지 못했기 때문이다.	But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
33	납달리 사람들은 벳세메스와 베다낫에 사는 사람들을 몰아내지 못했다. 납달리 사람들은 그 땅에 사는 가나안 사람들 가운데 살면서 벳세메스와 베다낫 사람들을 부려 먹었다.	Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth–anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh and of Beth–anath became tributaries unto them.
34	아모리 사람들이 단 사람들을 산지로 몰아넣어 골짜기로 내려오지 못하게 했다.	And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
35	아모리 사람들은 마음을 단단히 먹고 하르헤레스와 아얄론과 사알빔에 계속 살았다. 요셉 집안의 사람들의 힘이 세어지자 아모리 사람들을 부려 먹었다.	But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
36	아모리 사람들의 경계는 아그랍빔 오르막, 곧 셀라에서 위쪽이었다.	And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
