1	다윗이 암몬과 시리아를 쳐부수다 이런 다음에 암몬 사람들의 임금이 죽고 그의 아들 하눈이 그를 뒤이어 임금이 되었을 때 일어난 일이다.	And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
2	다윗이 중얼거렸다. “나하스의 아들 하눈한테 잘해 주어야지. 그의 아버지가 나한테 잘해 준 것처럼.” 그러고 나서 다윗은 신하들을 보내 아버지를 잃은 그를 위로하려고 했다. 다윗의 신하들이 암몬 사람들의 땅에 이르렀다.	Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3	암몬 사람들의 지휘관들이 자기들의 주인 하눈에게 말했다. “임금님의 눈에는 다윗이 임금님의 아버지를 공경하고 있어서 위로할 사람들을 임금님께 보낸 것으로 보이십니까? 이 도시를 알아보고 다니며 살펴보고서는 뒤엎으려고 다윗이 그의 신하들을 임금님께 보낸 것이 아니겠습니까?”	And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4	그러자 하눈이 다윗의 신하들을 잡아다가 그들의 수염 절반을 깎아 버렸다. 또 그들의 옷을 절반으로 잘라 내어 그들의 궁둥이가 보이도록 했다. 그러고는 그들을 내보냈다.	Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5	누군가 이 일을 다윗에게 알렸다. 그러자 그는 사람들을 보내어 그들을 맞이하게 했다. 그 사람들이 무척 창피해하고 있었기 때문이다. 임금이 말했다. “여리고에 머물러 있다가, 수염이 다시 자라면 돌아들 오세요.”	When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6	암몬 사람들은 자신들이 다윗한테 매우 밉보이게 된 것을 깨달았다. 암몬 사람들은 사람을 보내 벳르홉의 시리아 사람들과 소바의 시리아 사람들 가운데 보병 20,000명을 값을 주고 데려왔다. 또 마아가 임금에게서 1,000명, 돕 사람들에게서 12,000명을 데려왔다.	And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth–rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish–tob twelve thousand men.
7	다윗이 이 소식을 듣고 요압과 부대 전체 곧 모든 용사를 보냈다.	And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8	암몬 사람들도 나왔다. 전투하러 성문 출입구에 줄지어 나섰다. 소바의 시리아 사람들, 르홉 사람들, 돕 사람들, 마아가 사람들은 그들만 따로 들판에 있었다.	And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish–tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9	요압이 보았다. 전선이 그의 앞쪽에도 있고 뒤쪽에도 있었던 것이다. 그는 이스라엘에서 골라 뽑은 사람들 가운데서도 골라 뽑아서 시리아에 맞서 싸울 자리를 잡게 했다.	When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10	요압이 나머지 병사들을 자신의 형제 아비새에게 맡겼다. 아비새는 이들을 암몬 사람들과 전투하도록 줄지어 나서게 했다.	And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11	요압이 말했다. “시리아 사람들이 나보다 힘이 세면 네가 나에게 도움이 되어 주어야 해. 암몬 사람들이 너보다 힘이 세면 내가 가서 너를 도와줄 거야.	And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12	힘내! 우리가 서로 사기를 북돋우자, 우리 백성과 우리 하나님의 도시들을 위해서! 여호와께서 여호와 보시기에 좋은 일을 해 주실 거야.”	Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good.
13	요압이 자신과 함께한 병사들을 거느리고 전투하러 시리아 사람들한테로 다가갔다. 그러자 그들이 그의 앞에서 달아났다.	And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14	암몬 사람들이 보니 시리아 사람들이 달아나고 있었다. 그래서 암몬 사람들도 아비새 앞에서 달아나 도시로 가 버렸다. 그러자 요압은 암몬 사람들을 뒤쫓지 않고 예루살렘으로 왔다.	And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15	시리아 사람들은 자신들이 이스라엘 앞에서 무너진 것을 깨달았다. 그래서 함께 모였다.	And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16	하다데셀이 사람을 보내어 유프라테스강 건너에 있는 시리아 사람들을 나오게 했다. 그러자 그들이 헬람으로 왔다. 소박이 하다데셀 군대의 지휘관으로 그들 앞에 있었다.	And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17	누군가 이 소식을 다윗에게 알렸다. 그러자 다윗이 온 이스라엘을 모아서 요르단강을 건너 헬람으로 왔다. 시리아 사람들은 줄지어 나서서 다윗을 맞았다. 시리아 사람들이 다윗과 전투를 벌였다.	And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
18	시리아 사람들이 이스라엘 앞에서 달아났다. 다윗은 시리아 사람들 가운데서 700명의 전투수레 부대원과 40,000명의 기마병을 죽였다. 그들의 군대 지휘관 소박을 쳐부수었다. 그래서 그가 거기서 죽었다.	And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
19	하다데셀을 섬기던 모든 임금은 자신들이 이스라엘 앞에서 무너진 것을 깨달았다. 그들은 이스라엘 사람들과 서로 전쟁하지 않기로 약속하고 그들을 섬겼다. 시리아 사람들은 두려워서 암몬 사람들을 더는 도우려 하지 않았다.	And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
