1	기럇여아림 사람들이 와서 여호와의 상자(궤)를 가지고 올라갔다. 그러고는 그것을 언덕에 있는 아비나답의 집으로 가져갔다. 그의 아들 엘르아살을 그들이 거룩하게 했다. 여호와의 상자(궤)를 지키게 하려고 한 것이었다.	And the men of Kirjath–jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
2	사무엘이 이스라엘을 이끌다 그 상자(궤)가 기럇여아림에 머문 날부터 많은 날이 지났다. 20년이 되었다. 이스라엘의 온 집안이 슬퍼하며 여호와께로 향하고 있었다.	And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath–jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3	사무엘이 이스라엘의 온 집안에 이렇게 말했다. “온 맘으로 여러분이 여호와께로 돌아오고 있다면, 여러분 가운데 있는 다른 나라 사람의 신들과 아슈타르테를 치워 버리세요. 여러분의 마음을 여호와께로 돌리세요. 오로지 그분만을 섬기세요. 그러면 그분이 여러분을 필리스티아 사람들의 손에서 빼내 주실 것입니다.”	And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
4	이스라엘 사람들이 바알과 아슈타르테를 치워 버리고 여호와만 섬겼다.	Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
5	사무엘이 말했다. “온 이스라엘을 미스바로 모으세요. 내가 여러분을 위하여 여호와께 기도하겠습니다.”	And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
6	그들이 미스바에 모였고 물을 길어 와 여호와 앞에 부었다. 그날에 금식하며 거기서 말했다. “우리가 여호와께 죄를 지었습니다.” 사무엘은 이스라엘 사람들을 재판관(사사)으로서 이끌었다. 미스바에서였다.	And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
7	필리스티아 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들이 미스바에 모였다는 것을 들었다. 그러자 필리스티아 우두머리들이 이스라엘로 올라왔다. 이스라엘 사람들이 듣고서는 필리스티아 사람들 앞에서 두려워했다.	And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8	이스라엘 사람들이 사무엘에게 말했다. “우리를 두고서 침묵하지 마세요. 여호와 우리 하나님께 도와 달라고 소리쳐 주십시오. 우리를 필리스티아 사람들의 손에서 구해 주시도록요.”	And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
9	사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린양 한 마리를 가져가서는 다태우는제물(번제물)로 고스란히 여호와께 올려 드렸다. 그리고 사무엘은 이스라엘을 위하여 여호와께 도와 달라고 소리쳤다. 그러자 그에게 여호와께서 대답하셨다.	And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him.
10	다태우는제물(번제물)을 사무엘이 올려 드릴 때 일이 일어났다. 필리스티아 사람들이 이스라엘과 전쟁하려고 쳐들어온 것이다. 여호와께서 그날에 어마어마한 소리로 필리스티아 사람들에게 천둥이 치게 하셨다. 그들을 혼란에 빠뜨리셨다. 그들이 이스라엘 앞에서 무너졌다.	And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.
11	이스라엘 남자들이 미스바에서 나가서 필리스티아 사람들을 쫓았다. 벳갈 아래에 이르기까지 그들을 쳤다.	And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth–car.
12	사무엘이 돌 한 개를 가져다가 미스바와 센 사이에 두었다. 그리고 그 돌의 이름을 에벤에셀이라 지어 부르고는 말했다. “여기에 이르도록 우리를 여호와께서 도우셨구나!”	Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben–ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
13	필리스티아 사람들이 무릎 꿇었다. 이스라엘 지역으로 더는 오지 않았다. 여호와의 손이 사무엘의 모든 날 동안 필리스티아 사람들을 누르고 있었다.	So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14	필리스티아 사람들이 이스라엘에게서 빼앗았던 도시들이 에그론에서부터 가드까지 이스라엘에게 돌아왔다. 그 딸린 지역도 이스라엘이 필리스티아 사람들의 손에서 되찾았다. 그리고 이스라엘과 아모리 사람들 사이에는 평화가 있었다.	And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15	사무엘이 이스라엘을 재판관(사사)으로서 이끌었다. 그가 살아 있는 모든 날 동안에 그랬다.	And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16	해마다 베델과 길갈과 미스바를 돌아다니며 이스라엘을 이 모든 곳에서 재판관(사사)으로서 이끌었다.	And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth–el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
17	그가 라마로 돌아오곤 했는데, 거기에 그의 집이 있었기 때문이다. 거기서 이스라엘을 재판관(사사)으로서 이끌었으며 거기에 여호와를 위한 제단을 만들었다.	And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord.
