1	사울이 야베스 사람들을 구해 내다 나하스라는 암몬 사람이 올라와 길르앗의 야베스 앞에 진을 쳤다. 온 야베스 사람들이 나하스에게 말했다. “우리를 위해 협약을 맺어 주십시오. 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.”	Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh–gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
2	그들에게 암몬 사람 나하스가 대답했다. “이렇게 한다면 곧 내가 너희 모두의 오른쪽 눈을 뽑아낸다면, 내가 너희와 협약을 맺어 주지. 그렇게 내가 온 이스라엘에 창피를 줄 것이다.”	And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
3	그에게 야베스의 원로들이 말했다. “우리에게 7일만 시간을 주시오. 이스라엘 온 지역에 소식꾼들을 보내겠소. 우리를 구해 줄 사람이 없으면 우리가 당신께 나아가겠소.”	And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
4	소식꾼들이 사울의 도시 기브아로 가서는 사람들 귀에 들리도록 그 일들을 알려 주었다. 그러자 모든 사람들이 소리 높여 울었다.	Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5	그런데, 저기, 사울이 소를 몰고 밭에서 오고 있는 것이 아닌가! 사울이 물었다. “사람들에게 무슨 일이 있길래 이렇게 울고 있는 겁니까?” 그들이 사울에게 야베스 사람들의 일을 이야기해 주었다.	And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
6	이 일에 대해 듣고 있을 때, 하나님의 영이 사울의 안으로 밀고 들어가셨다. 그는 노여움으로 크게 불타올랐다.	And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7	그러자 그가 소 한 쌍을 잡아다가 토막을 내고는, 소식꾼들의 손에 부쳐 이스라엘 온 지역으로 보내며 말했다. “사울과 사무엘을 따라 나가지 않는 사람이 있다면, 그의 소는 이같이 될 것이다!” 여호와를 무서워하는 마음이 이 백성에게 생겨서 그들은 마치 한 사람처럼 나아갔다.	And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
8	사울이 그들을 베섹에서 점검해 보았다. 이스라엘 사람들이 300,000명이었고 유다 사람은 30,000명이었다.	And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9	와 있던 소식꾼들에게 사람들이 말했다. “길르앗의 야베스 사람들에게 이렇게 말하시오. ‘내일 날이 뜨거울 때, 여러분에게 구원이 이를 것입니다.’” 소식꾼들이 가서 야베스 사람들에게 알려 주자 그들이 기뻐했다.	And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
10	야베스 사람들은 말했다. “내일 당신들에게 나가겠습니다. 당신들 보기에 좋을 대로 우리에게 다 하십시오.”	Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
11	다음날이 되었다. 사울은 백성을 세 부대로 나누었다. 그들은 아침 일찍 진영 한가운데로 들어가 날이 뜨거워질 때까지 암몬을 쳤다. 살아남은 사람들도 뿔뿔이 흩어졌다. 그들 가운데 단둘이라도 함께 남아 있는 경우가 없었다.	And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12	사람들이 사무엘에게 말했다. “‘사울이 우리의 임금이 될 수 있겠느냐?’ 하고 말하던 사람이 누구입니까? 그 사람들을 내주십시오. 우리가 죽여 버리겠습니다.”	And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
13	사울이 말했다. “이런 날에 사람을 죽이지 마십시오. 오늘은 여호와께서 이스라엘에 구원을 베푸신 날입니다.”	And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.
14	사무엘이 사람들에게 말했다. “가세요, 길갈로 갑시다. 거기서 왕국을 새롭게 합시다.”	Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.
15	모든 사람이 길갈로 갔다. 거기 길갈에서 사울을 여호와 앞에서 임금으로 삼았다. 거기서 평화의희생제물(화목제물)을 여호와 앞에 잡아 바쳤다. 사울과 온 이스라엘 사람들이 거기서 매우 기뻐했다.	And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
