1	사무엘이 기름병을 가져다가 기름을 그의 머리에 붓고 입 맞추고 말했다. “여호와께서 그분 몫인 백성의 지도자로 그대를 기름부으신 것이 아닙니까?	Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
2	오늘 그대가 나를 떠나서 갈 때, 두 명의 남자를 만날 겁니다. 베냐민 지역 셀사흐에 있는 라헬의 무덤 곁에서요. 그들이 그대에게 말할 겁니다. ‘당신이 찾으러 갔던 암나귀들은 찾았습니다. 보세요, 당신의 아버지가 암나귀의 일은 잊어버리고, 당신들 걱정에 이런 말을 했습니다. 「내 아들을 위해 내가 어떻게 해야 하나?」’	When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3	그곳을 지나 그 너머 다볼의 참나무까지 가도록 하세요. 거기서 세 명의 남자가 그대를 찾을 겁니다. 베델로 하나님께로 올라가는 사람들입니다. 한 명은 세 마리의 어린 염소를 올려 메었고, 한 명은 세 덩이의 빵을 들었고, 한 명은 포도주 항아리를 들었을 겁니다.	Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth–el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
4	그들이 그대에게 안녕하시냐고 물을 겁니다. 그리고 그대에게 두 덩이의 빵을 주거든 그들 손에서 받도록 하세요.	And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.
5	그러고 나서, 하나님의 언덕으로 들어가도록 하세요. 필리스티아 진영이 있는 곳이지요. 그 도시에 들어갈 때 그대는 높은곳(산당)으로부터 내려오는 예언자 무리와 맞닥치게 될 겁니다. 그들은 하프, 작은북, 피리, 기타를 앞세운 채 넋을 잃고 예언할 겁니다.	After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:
6	그러고 나서 여호와의 영이 그대 안으로 밀고 들어가실 것입니다. 그러면 그대도 그들과 함께 예언하는 모습을 드러낼 것입니다. 그리고 그대는 또 다른 사람으로 바뀔 것입니다.	And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
7	이러한 표징들이 그대에게 나타나게 되면, 그대는 손 닿는 대로 무엇이든 하세요. 하나님이 그대와 함께 계십니다.	And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
8	나보다 앞서 길갈로 내려가세요. 보세요. 내가 그대에게 내려가 다태우는제물(번제물)을 올려 드리고 평화의희생제물(화목제물)을 드릴 것입니다. 내가 그대에게 갈 때까지 7일을 기다리도록 하세요. 그러면 그대가 해야 할 일을 가르쳐 주겠습니다.”	And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.
9	그가 사무엘로부터 돌아서서 갈 때 일이 일어났다. 하나님이 또 다른 마음으로 그를 바꿔 주신 것이었다. 이 표징들이 그날 모두 나타났다.	And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10	그들이 거기서 기브아로 갔는데, 거기, 예언자 무리가 그와 마주친 것이다. 하나님의 영이 그의 안으로 밀고 들어가셨고, 그는 그들 가운데서 예언하는 모습을 드러냈다.	And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11	전부터 그를 알고 있던 모든 사람들이 보았다. 그런데, 저기, 그가 예언자들과 함께 예언을 하고 있는 것이 아닌가! 사람들이 옆 사람들과 말했다. “기스의 아들에게 도대체 무슨 일이 일어난 거요? 예언자들 가운데 사울도 있나요?”	And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12	그곳에 있던 한 사람이 대답하여 말했다. “그들의 아버지가 누구요?” 그러고 나서 이 속담이 생겼다. “예언자들 가운데 사울도 있나요?”	And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13	그가 예언하는 모습을 다 나타내고 나서는 높은곳(산당)으로 갔다.	And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
14	사울의 삼촌이 사울과 그가 부리는 젊은이에게 말했다. “어디에 갔던 거냐?” 그가 대답했다. “암나귀들을 찾으러요. 그런데 찾을 수 없어서 사무엘에게 갔습니다.”	And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
15	사울의 삼촌이 말했다. “나에게 다 이야기해 다오. 너희에게 사무엘이 무슨 말씀을 하시더냐?”	And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
16	사울이 삼촌에게 말했다. “암나귀들을 찾았다고 우리에게 확실히 말씀하셨어요.” 그러나 사무엘이 왕국의 일을 두고서 해 주었던 말은 그에게 알려 주지 않았다.	And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17	사울이 임금으로 뽑히다 사무엘이 백성을 불러냈다. 여호와 앞에 서도록 미스바로 모이게 한 것이다.	And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;
18	그가 이스라엘 사람들에게 말했다. “여호와 이스라엘의 하나님이 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘내가 이스라엘을 이집트에서 이끌어 내었다. 너희를 이집트의 손에서, 또 너희를 짓누른 모든 왕국의 손에서 빼냈다.’	And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:
19	그러나 오늘, 온갖 재난과 어려움으로부터 여러분을 구원하신 여러분의 하나님을 여러분이 버렸습니다. 그러고는 ‘우리에게 임금을 세워 주시오!’ 하고 그분께 말했습니다. 이제 여러분은 지파별로 가문별로 여호와 앞에 자리 잡고 서십시오.”	And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20	사무엘이 이스라엘의 모든 지파를 가까이 오게 했다. 그리고 제비에서 베냐민 지파가 뽑혔다.	And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21	베냐민 지파를 가문별로 가까이 오게 했다. 그리고 제비에서 마드리 가문이 뽑혔다. 그리고 제비에서 기스의 아들 사울이 뽑혔다. 그를 찾았는데, 찾지 못했다.	When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22	여호와께 다시 여쭈었다. “여기로 올 사람이 또 있습니까?” 여호와께서 말씀하셨다. “저기, 바로 그 짐들 뒤에 숨어 있다.”	Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
23	그들이 달려가서 거기서 사울을 데려왔다. 그가 사람들 가운데 자리 잡고 섰는데, 모든 사람들보다 어깨 위로 머리 하나만큼 더 컸다.	And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24	사무엘이 모든 백성에게 말했다. “여호와께서 골라 뽑으신 사람을 보았는지요? 온 백성 가운데 이만한 사람이 없습니다.” 모든 백성이 소리쳐서 말했다. “임금님, 만세!”	And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
25	사무엘이 백성에게 왕국의 법을 말해 주고, 책에 적어 여호와 앞에 간직해 두었다. 그리고 사무엘은 모든 백성을 저마다 자기 집으로 보냈다.	Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26	사울도 기브아의 자기 집으로 갔다. 하나님이 용사들의 마음을 어루만지셨고, 그들이 그와 함께 갔다.	And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
27	그런데 몹쓸 사람들은 이렇게 말했다. “어떻게 이 사람이 우리를 구원하려나?” 그들은 얕보고 사울에게 예물을 바치지 않았다. 그러나 그는 침묵을 지켰다.	But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
