1	브올에서 닥친 재앙을 비느하스가 멈추게 하다 이스라엘이 싯팀에 머물렀는데, 백성이 모압의 딸들과 놀아나기 시작했다.	And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2	모압 여자들이 자신들의 신들에게 희생제물을 바칠 때 이스라엘 백성을 초대했다. 이스라엘 백성이 먹고 모압 신들에게 엎드려 절했다.	And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3	이렇게 이스라엘이 바알브올에게 따라붙었다. 그러자 여호와께서 이스라엘을 향한 노여움으로 불타오르셨다.	And Israel joined himself unto Baal–peor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
4	여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “백성의 어른을 모두 붙잡아다가 죽이고, 여호와를 위해 시체를 햇볕이 내리쬐는 데 내버려두어라. 그러면 여호와의 뜨거운 분노가 이스라엘로부터 사그라들 것이다.”	And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
5	모세가 이스라엘의 재판관들에게 말했다. “저마다 자기 사람들 가운데서 바알브올에게 따라붙은 사람들을 죽이시오.”	And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal–peor.
6	그런데, 이런, 이스라엘 사람들 가운데서 어떤 남자가 나갔다가 미디안 여자를 자기 형제들에게로 데리고 오는 것이 아닌가! 그는 모세와 이스라엘 사람들 온 무리의 눈앞에서 그렇게 했다. 이스라엘 사람들의 온 무리가 만남의 천막 입구에서 울고 있을 때 그렇게 한 것이다.	And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7	엘르아살의 아들이자 아론 제사장의 손자인 비느하스가 보고서, 무리 가운데서 일어나 손에 창을 들었다.	And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8	그러고는 그 이스라엘 남자를 뒤따라 천막으로 들어가서, 그 둘 곧 그 이스라엘 남자와 그 여자의 배를 찔러 꿰뚫었다. 그러자 이스라엘 사람들에게서 재앙이 멈췄다.	And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9	그 재앙으로 죽은 사람이 24,000명이었다.	And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10	여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
11	“엘르아살의 아들이자 아론 제사장의 손자인 비느하스가 나의 노여움을 이스라엘 사람들로부터 사그라들게 했구나. 그들 가운데서 내가 질투하듯이 그가 질투했구나. 그래서 내가 나의 질투 가운데 이스라엘 사람들을 끝장내지는 않았다.	Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12	그러므로 이제 말해 주어라. ‘보라, 내가 비느하스에게는 나의 언약을 분명히 해 둘 것이다. 곧 평화의 언약이다.	Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13	그것이 그와 그 뒤로 그의 후손에게는 제사장 일을 영원히 맡긴다는 언약이 될 것이다. 비느하스가 그의 하나님을 위해 질투하여 이스라엘 사람들의 죄를 없애 주었기 때문이다.’”	And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14	미디안 여자와 함께 맞아 죽은 이스라엘 남자의 이름은 시므리였다. 그는 살루의 아들로 시므온 사람들의 아버지 쪽 집안 우두머리였다.	Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15	맞아 죽은 미디안 여자의 이름은 수르의 딸 고스비였다. 수르는 미디안에서 아버지 쪽 집안 부족의 어른이었다.	And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
16	여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
17	“미디안 사람들과 싸워서 그들을 쳐 죽여야 한다.	Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18	그들은 브올 사건에서 꾀를 부려 너희의 적이 되었기 때문이다. 고스비 사건에서도 그랬다. 그는 미디안 우두머리의 딸이자 그들의 누이인데, 브올 사건으로 재앙이 닥친 날에 맞아 죽은 사람이다.”	For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
