1	발람이 발락의 부름을 받아 가다 이스라엘 사람들이 나아가, 여리고에 가까운 요르단 건너편 모압 벌판에서 진을 쳤다.	And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
2	십볼의 아들 발락은 이스라엘이 아모리 사람들을 어떻게 했는지 다 보았다.	And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3	모압은 이스라엘 백성 앞에서 매우 두려워했다. 그 수가 엄청났기 때문이다. 모압은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 무서움을 느꼈다.	And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
4	모압이 미디안의 원로들에게 말했다. “소가 들판의 푸른 풀을 먹어 치우듯이, 그 모인 무리가 지금 우리 둘레의 모든 것을 먹어 치우려 합니다.” 그때 모압의 임금은 십볼의 아들 발락이었다.	And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5	발락은 브올의 아들 발람을 자기에게 불러오게 하려고 심부름꾼들을 보냈다. 그의 피붙이들의 땅, 강가에 있는 브돌로 보내어 이렇게 말하게 했다. “보시오, 한 백성이 이집트에서 나왔는데, 보시오, 눈에 보이는 족족 땅을 덮어 버렸소. 그 백성이 나의 맞은편에 머물고 있소.	He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
6	지금 곧바로 와서, 나를 위해 이 백성을 저주해 주시오. 그들이 나보다 강하기 때문이오. 어쩌면 내가 이 백성을 쳐부수어 이 땅에서 쫓아낼 수 있을 것이오. 내가 알기로는 그대가 복을 빌어 준 사람은 복을 받고, 그대가 저주한 사람은 저주받을 것이기 때문이오.”	Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7	모압의 원로들과 미디안의 원로들이 발람에게 줄 선물을 손에 들고 함께 갔다. 발람에게 가서 발락의 말을 전했다.	And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
8	발람이 그들에게 말했다. “오늘 밤은 여기서 묵으시지요. 여호와께서 내게 말씀하시는 대로 답변해 드릴 테니까요.” 그래서 모압의 관리들은 발람의 집에 머물렀다.	And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
9	하나님이 발람에게 오셔서 “너의 집에 머물고 있는 이 사람들이 누구냐?” 하고 물으셨다.	And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
10	발람이 하나님께 대답했다. “십볼의 아들인 모압 임금 발락이 저에게 사람을 보내어 이렇게 요청해 왔습니다.	And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
11	‘보시오, 한 백성이 이집트에서 빠져나와서 눈에 보이는 족족 땅을 덮어 버렸소. 지금 곧바로 와서, 나를 위해 이 백성을 저주해 주시오. 어쩌면 내가 싸워 쫓아낼 수 있을 것이오.’”	Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.
12	하나님이 발람에게 말씀하셨다. “그들과 함께 가지 마라! 그 백성을 저주하지 마라! 그들은 복받은 백성이기 때문이다.”	And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.
13	발람이 아침에 일어나서 발락의 관리들에게 말했다. “여러분의 땅으로 돌아가십시오. 내가 여러분과 함께 가도록 여호와께서 내버려두지 않으시기 때문입니다.”	And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land: for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
14	모압의 관리들이 일어나서 발락에게 돌아갔다. 그러고는 발람이 자기들과 함께 오기를 마다했다고 보고했다.	And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
15	발락은 다시 한번 사람들을 보냈다. 이전 사람들보다 더 높은 관리들을 더 많이 보냈다.	And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.
16	그들이 발람에게 가서 요청했다. “십볼의 아들 발락 임금님이 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘아무 거리낌 없이 나에게로 오시오!	And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
17	내가 그대에게 값을 반드시 톡톡히 쳐줄 것이오. 그대가 나에게 말하는 대로 다 할 것이오. 꼭 와서, 나를 위해 이 백성을 저주해 주시오!’”	For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
18	발람이 발락의 신하들에게 대답했다. “발락 임금님이 왕궁의 은과 금을 가득히 나에게 주신다고 합시다. 그래도 나는 여호와 나의 하나님의 명령을 어기면서는, 작든 크든 그 어떤 일도 할 수 없습니다.	And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.
19	이제 여러분도 오늘 밤 여기에 머무십시오. 여호와께서 나에게 무엇이라 더 말씀하실지 알아보겠습니다.”	Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will say unto me more.
20	하나님이 밤에 발람에게 오셔서 말씀하셨다. “이 사람들이 너를 부르러 왔다면, 일어나 그들과 함께 가거라. 다만 내가 너에게 일러 주는 말 그대로만 하여라!”	And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.
21	발람이 아침에 일어나 자기 암나귀에 안장을 얹고, 모압의 관리들과 함께 갔다.	And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22	그러나 발람이 길을 나서자, 하나님이 노여움으로 불타오르셨다. 그가 가지 못하도록 길에서 여호와의 천사가 그 앞을 막아섰다. 발람은 암나귀를 타고 있었고, 하인 둘이 그와 함께했다.	And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23	암나귀가 여호와의 천사를 보았는데, 손에 칼을 뽑아 들고 길에 서 있었다. 그래서 암나귀는 길에서 벗어나 밭으로 들어갔다. 발람은 암나귀를 때려 길로 내몰았다.	And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
24	여호와의 천사가 포도밭 사이의 움푹 팬 길에 서 있었다. 길 이쪽에도 돌담이 있고, 저쪽에도 돌담이 있었다.	But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
25	암나귀는 여호와의 천사를 보고, 담벼락 쪽으로 붙으면서 발람의 다리를 담벼락 쪽으로 밀어붙였다. 그러자 발람이 다시 암나귀를 때렸다.	And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
26	여호와의 천사가 더 가다가, 비좁은 곳 곧 오른쪽으로도 왼쪽으로도 벗어날 길이 없는 곳에 멈추어 섰다.	And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27	암나귀가 여호와의 천사를 보고는, 발람을 태운 채로 누워 버렸다. 발람이 노여움으로 불타올라서 회초리로 암나귀를 때렸다.	And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
28	여호와께서 암나귀의 입을 열어 주시자, 암나귀가 발람에게 따졌다. “제가 당신께 어찌했다고 이처럼 세 번이나 저를 때리시나요?”	And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
29	발람이 암나귀에게 대답했다. “네가 나에게 건방지게 굴었기 때문이야. 나의 손에 칼이 있었더라면, 곧바로 너를 죽였을 거야.”	And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
30	암나귀가 발람에게 물었다. “저는 당신의 암나귀가 아닙니까? 당신께서는 오늘에 이르도록 제 평생 저를 타지 않으셨습니까? 제가 당신을 이런 식으로 모신 적이 있었습니까?” 발람이 대답했다. “없었다.”	And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
31	여호와께서 발람의 눈을 열어 주시자, 발람은 여호와의 천사가 손에 칼을 뽑아 들고 길에 선 것을 보았다. 그래서 얼굴이 땅에 닿도록 엎드려 절했다.	Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
32	여호와의 천사가 그에게 말했다. “너의 암나귀를 무엇 때문에 이처럼 세 번이나 때렸느냐? 보라, 너를 막으려고 내가 나왔다. 그 길로 가다가는 내 앞에서 네가 굴러떨어질 것이기 때문이다.	And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
33	암나귀는 나를 보고 이렇게 세 번이나 내 앞에서 벗어났다. 암나귀가 내게서 벗어나지 않았더라면, 내가 너는 죽이고 암나귀는 살렸을 것이다.”	And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.
34	발람이 여호와의 천사에게 말했다. “제가 죄를 지었습니다. 주님이 저를 막으려고 길에 서신 것을 알지 못했습니다. 지금이라도 주님 보시기에 좋지 않으시다면, 돌아가겠습니다.”	And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.
35	여호와의 천사가 발람에게 명령했다. “그 사람들과 함께 가라. 그렇지만 내가 너에게 일러 주는 말, 그것만 말해라.” 발람이 발락의 관리들과 함께 갔다.	And the angel of the Lord said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36	발락은 발람이 온다는 소식을 들었다. 그래서 영토 가장자리의 아르논 국경에 있는 모압 도시로 나가서 그를 맞았다.	And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
37	발락이 발람에게 물었다. “내가 그대를 불러오려고 긴급히 사람을 보내지 않았소? 그런데 그대가 나에게 오지 않은 까닭이 무엇이오? 내가 그대에게 정말 값을 톡톡히 쳐줄 수 없다고 본 것이오?”	And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
38	발람이 발락에게 대답했다. “이제 제가 임금님께 나아왔습니다. 그렇지만 지금 제가 어떻게 아무것이나 말씀드릴 수 있겠습니까? 저는 하나님이 제 입에 넣어 주시는 말씀, 그것만 말씀드릴 수 있습니다.”	And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
39	발람이 발락과 함께 가서 기럇후솟에 이르렀다.	And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath–huzoth.
40	발락이 소와 양을 잡아서, 발람과 또 그와 함께한 관리들에게 보냈다.	And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41	다음날 아침에 발락은 발람을 데리고 바못바알로 올라갔다. 발람은 거기서 이스라엘 백성의 끝자락을 내려다보았다.	And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
