1	가나안 땅을 살펴보고 오게 하시다 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2	“너는 사람들을 보내어, 내가 이스라엘 사람들에게 줄 가나안 땅을 살펴보고 오게 해라. 너희는 아버지 쪽 지파별로 한 사람씩 보내라. 그들 가운데서 우두머리를 모두 보내라.”	Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
3	모세는 여호와의 말씀대로 바란 광야에서 그들을 보냈다. 그들은 모두 이스라엘 사람들의 어른이었다.	And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
4	그들의 이름은 이러하다. 르우벤 지파에서는 삭굴의 아들 삼무아를 보냈다.	And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5	시므온 지파에서는 호리의 아들 사밧을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6	유다 지파에서는 여분네의 아들 갈렙을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7	잇사갈 지파에서는 요셉의 아들 이갈을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8	에브라임 지파에서는 눈의 아들 여호수아를 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.
9	베냐민 지파에서는 라부의 아들 발디를 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
10	스불론 지파에서는 소디의 아들 갓디엘을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11	요셉 지파 곧 므낫세 지파에서는 수시의 아들 갓디를 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
12	단 지파에서는 그말리의 아들 암미엘을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13	아셀 지파에서는 미카엘의 아들 스둘을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
14	납달리 지파에서는 웝시의 아들 나흐비를 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15	갓 지파에서는 마기의 아들 그우엘을 보냈다.	Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16	가나안 땅을 살펴보고 오도록 모세가 보낸 사람들의 이름이 이러했다. 모세는 눈의 아들 호세아를 여호수아라고 불렀다. ()	These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
17	가나안 땅을 살펴보고 온 사람들의 보고를 듣다 모세는 가나안 땅을 살펴보고 오도록 그들을 보내면서 그들에게 말했다. “여기서 네게브로 올라가세요. 그다음에는 산지로 올라가세요.	And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
18	그 땅이 어떤지 알아보세요. 거기에 사는 백성이 어떤지도요. 강한지 약한지, 많은지 적은지도요.	And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
19	사람들이 사는 땅이 어떤지, 그 땅이 좋은지 나쁜지도요. 사람들이 사는 도시가 어떤지, 야전 막사가 많은지 요새화되었는지도요.	And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
20	그 땅이 얼마나 기름진지 메마른지, 거기에 나무가 있는지 없는지도요. 용기를 내어 그 땅의 열매도 가져오세요.” 그즈음은 포도의 첫 열매가 나는 때였다.	And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
21	그들은 친 광야에서 하맛 길목의 르홉까지 올라가서 그 땅을 살펴보았다.	So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
22	또 네게브로 올라가서 헤브론까지 갔다. 거기에는 아낙 사람들인 아히만과 세새와 달매가 있었다. 헤브론은 이집트의 소안보다 7년 앞서 세운 곳이다.	And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23	그들은 또 에스골 마른시내까지 갔다. 거기서 포도송이가 달린 가지 하나를 잘라다가 막대기에 꿰어 두 사람이 둘러메었다. 또한 석류와 무화과도 가져왔다.	And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24	그곳을 에스골 마른시내라고 불렀다. 이스라엘 사람들이 거기서 잘라서 가져온 포도송이 때문이었다.	The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25	그들은 그 땅을 살펴보고서야 돌아왔다. 40일이 지나서였다.	And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26	그러고는 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 사람들 온 무리에게 나아갔다. 바란 광야 가데스로 간 것이다. 그들이 모세와 아론과 온 무리에게 보고하고는 그 땅의 열매를 보여 주었다.	And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27	모세에게는 이렇게 이야기했다. “어르신이 우리를 보내신 땅으로 우리가 갔습니다. 정말 젖이 흐르고 꿀이 있는 곳이었습니다. 그 땅의 열매가 이것입니다.	And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28	다만 그 땅에 사는 백성은 강하고 도시는 아주 튼튼하고 매우 큽니다. 아낙 사람들도 거기서 보았습니다.	Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29	아말렉이 네게브 땅에 살고 있습니다. 히타이트 사람들, 여부스 사람들, 아모리 사람들은 산지에 살고 있습니다. 가나안 사람은 바닷가와 요르단강 가에 살고 있습니다.”	The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30	갈렙이 백성을 달래려고 모세에게 말했다. “올라가서 그 땅을 차지합시다. 우리는 정말 해낼 수 있습니다.”	And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31	그와 함께 올라갔던 사람들은 다르게 말했다. “그 백성에게로 맞서 올라갈 수 없습니다. 그들이 우리보다 더 강하기 때문입니다.”	But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32	그러고는 자기들이 살펴보고 온 땅을 두고 나쁜 말을 쏟아 내며 이스라엘 사람들에게 말했다. “우리가 건너가서 살펴본 땅은, 거기 사는 사람들을 잡아먹는 땅입니다. 우리가 그 가운데서 본 백성은 모두 키가 매우 큰 사람들입니다.	And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33	거기서 우리는 거인들도 보았습니다. 거인들에게서 태어난 아낙 사람들입니다. 우리는 스스로 보기에도 메뚜기 같았습니다. 그들이 보기에도 그랬을 겁니다.”	And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
