1	원수들이 계속해서 겁을 주다 산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈과 우리의 나머지 원수들이 소문을 들었다. 내가 성벽을 쌓아서 성벽에 틈이 남아 있지 않다는 것이었다. 또한 그때까지 성문에 문짝은 달지 못했다는 것이었다. 그때 이런 일이 일어났다.	Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
2	산발랏과 게셈이 나에게 사람을 보내어 말을 전하게 한 것이다. “이리 오시오. 우리 함께 오노 벌판의 학크피림에서 한번 봅시다.” 그들은 나한테 해코지하려는 것이었다.	That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
3	나는 사람을 보내어 그들에게 답했다. “나는 큰일을 하고 있는 중이라 내려갈 수 없소. 왜 일을 멈추어야 하는 것이오? 내가 일을 내팽개치고 당신들한테 내려가야겠소?”	And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
4	그들은 네 번이나 나에게 사람을 보내어 이런 말을 전해 왔다. 나도 똑같은 말로 그들에게 대답했다.	Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5	산발랏은 내게 다섯 번째로 이런 말을 하라고 그가 부리는 젊은이를 보내왔다. 그 사람의 손에는 봉하지 않은 편지가 들려 있었다.	Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6	거기에는 이렇게 쓰여 있었다. “여러 민족 가운데 소문이 퍼져 있고, 게셈도 그렇게 말하고 있소. 유다 사람들과 함께 총독님이 맞서 대들 생각을 하고 있다는 것이오. 그래서 총독님이 성벽을 세우고 있다는 것이오. 이런 말들에 따르면 총독님은 그들 가운데 임금이 되려 하고 있는 것이오.	Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7	더구나 총독님은 예루살렘에 예언자들을 세웠소. ‘유다에 임금님이 계신다.’ 하고 총독님을 위해 떠들어 줄 예언자들 말이오. 이제 이런 말들이 임금님에게도 들리게 될 것이오. 그러니 오시오. 우리 함께 서로 의견을 나누어 봅시다.”	And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8	나는 산발랏에게 사람을 보내어 말을 전했다. “총독님이 말씀하시는 이런 일들 같은 것은 일어난 적이 없소. 총독님이 맘대로 지어내고 있는 것이오.”	Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9	그들은 모두 우리를 겁주려 했던 것이다. ‘그들이 일에서 손을 놓게 될 거야. 일이 이루어지지 않을 거야.’라고 생각해서였다. (기도) “그러니 이제 내 손을 힘 있게 해 주십시오!”	For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10	나는 직접 스마야의 집에 갔다. 그는 들라야의 아들이자 므헤다벨의 손자인데 집에 갇혀 있었다. 그가 말했다. “우리 하나님의 집, 성전 한가운데로 가서 만납시다. 성전 문을 걸어 잠급시다. 그들이 총독님을 죽이러 올 것이니까요. 밤에 와서 총독님을 죽이려 할 것이니까요.”	Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
11	내가 말했다. “나 같은 사람이 달아나다니요? 어떻게 나 같은 사람이 성전에 들어가서 살아남으려고 하겠습니까? 나는 안 들어갑니다.”	And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
12	나는 알아차렸다. 아, 하나님이 그를 보내신 것이 아니지 않은가! 그가 나한테 안 좋은 예언을 한 것은 도비야와 산발랏이 그를 돈으로 샀기 때문이다.	And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13	그를 돈으로 산 것은, 내가 겁을 먹고 하자는 대로 해서 죄를 짓게 하려는 것이었다. 그들이 내 이름에 먹칠하고 나에게 창피를 주려는 것이었다.	Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14	“나의 하나님, 기억해 두십시오, 도비야와 산발랏을, 그들이 이런 짓 한 그대로요. 노아댜 예언자와 나머지 예언자들도요. 나를 겁주려 한 사람들입니다.”	My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
15	성벽을 다 쌓다 성벽은 엘룰달 스물다섯째 날에 마무리되었다. 52일이 걸린 것이다.	So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.
16	우리의 모든 원수들이 듣고 우리 주변의 모든 민족 사람들이 보았다. 그래서 그들은 기가 꺾였다. 이 일을 우리 하나님이 이루어 주셨다는 것을 그들이 알게 되었다.	And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
17	그즈음에도 유다의 귀족들에게서 도비야에게로 가는 편지가 많았고, 도비야의 편지도 그들에게 오고 있었다.	Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.
18	유다에 도비야와 동맹을 맺은 사람이 많았던 것이다. 그는 아라흐의 아들 스가냐의 사위였고, 그의 아들 여호하난도 베레갸의 아들 므술람의 딸과 결혼했던 것이다.	For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19	그들은 그가 했다는 좋은 일을 내 앞에서 떠벌리기도 하고, 내가 한 말을 빼내서 그에게 알리기도 했다. 도비야가 몇 차례 편지를 보내어 나를 겁준 일도 있었다.	Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
