1	테오필로스에게 써 보내다 우리 가운데서 이루어 놓으신 일들에 대한 이야기를 엮어 내려고 많은 사람들이 손을 댔습니다.	Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2	처음부터 직접 본 사람들과 말씀의 시중꾼 된 사람들이 우리에게 전해 준 꼭 그대로 말입니다.	Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3	그런데 나도 시작점부터 모든 것을 꼼꼼히 따라가 보았으므로, 존귀하신 테오필로스님, 어르신을 위해 차근차근 써 보내기로 마음먹었습니다.	It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4	어르신께서 들어서 배운 말씀들이 확실한 것임을 제대로 알게 해 드리려는 것입니다.	That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5	세례자 요한이 태어나리라는 것을 알려 주시다 헤롯이 유대아의 임금이던 시절에 어떤 제사장이 있었다. 이름은 스가랴이고 아비야 모둠에 딸린 사람이다. 그에게 아내가 있었는데, 아론의 여자 후손으로 이름은 엘리자베스였다.	There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6	둘 다 하나님 앞에서 의인이었다. 살아가면서 주님이 주신 계명과 규정을 모두 지켜서, 나무랄 데가 없었다.	And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7	그런데 그들에게는 자식이 없었다. 엘리자베스가 아이를 갖지 못했기 때문이다. 또한 둘 다 나이가 많이 들었다.	And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8	한번은 이런 일이 있었다. 아비야 모둠의 순서가 되어서, 그가 하나님 앞에서 제사장 일을 맡아보고 있었다.	And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
9	제사장들 사이에서 늘 해 오던 대로 제비뽑기를 했는데, 스가랴가 주님의 성전에 들어가서 향을 살라 바치게 되었다.	According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10	그가 향을 바치는 시간에 백성이 모두 무리를 지어 바깥에서 기도하고 있었다.	And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11	그런데 주님의 천사가 그에게 나타나서 향피우는제단(향단) 오른쪽에 서 있었다.	And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12	스가랴가 보고서 겁에 질렸고, 두려움이 그를 덮쳤다.	And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13	천사가 스가랴한테 말했다. “스가랴, 두려워하지 마세요! 그대의 매달리는 기도를 귀담아들어 주셨으니까요. 그대의 아내 엘리자베스가 아들을 낳을 겁니다. 그러면 그 이름을 요한이라고 하세요.	But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14	그 아들이 그대에게 기쁨과 큰 즐거움이 될 겁니다. 그가 태어나면 많은 사람이 기뻐할 겁니다.	And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15	그가 주님 앞에서 훌륭하게 될 테니까요. 포도주와 맥주를 절대로 마시지 않을 겁니다. 이미 엄마 뱃속에서부터 성령으로 가득 찰 겁니다.	For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
16	많은 이스라엘 사람들을 그들의 주 하나님께로 돌아오게 할 겁니다.	And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17	또 그는 엘리야의 영과 능력으로 주님보다 앞서 와서, 부모의 마음을 자식에게로 돌아오게 할 겁니다. 말씀을 듣지 않는 사람들을 의인들의 지혜로 돌아오게 할 겁니다. 주님을 위해 갖추어진 백성을 준비해 둘 겁니다.”	And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18	스가랴가 천사한테 말했다. “그걸 무엇으로 알겠습니까? 제 자신은 늙었고, 아내도 나이가 많이 들었습니다.”	And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19	천사가 그에게 대답했다. “나는 가브리엘입니다. 하나님을 섬기고 있어요. 그대한테 말해 주라고 나를 보내셨어요. 이 좋은 소식을 그대에게 알려 주라고요.	And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20	자, 그대는 이런 일이 일어나는 날까지 아무 소리를 내지 못하고 말도 하지 못할 것입니다. 내 말을 믿지 않았기 때문이지요. 그때가 되면 이루어질 내 말을요.”	And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21	그러는 사이에 백성은 스가랴를 기다리고 있었다. 그가 성전에서 시간을 오래 끄는 것을 이상하게 여기고 있었다.	And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22	마침내 스가랴가 나왔지만 백성에게 말은 할 수 없었다. 그들은 스가랴가 성전에서 환상을 보았다는 것을 알아차렸다. 스가랴는 백성에게 몸짓만 하고, 계속 말을 못 하는 채로 지냈다.	And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23	그는 제사장으로 섬기는 날수를 다 채우고, 떠나 자기 집으로 갔다.	And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24	이런 날들이 지난 뒤에 그의 아내 엘리자베스가 아이를 가져, 5개월 동안 나다니지 않았다. 그리고 이렇게 말했다.	And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25	“주님이 살펴봐 주신 날에 나에게 이렇게 해 주셔서 사람들이 흉볼 거리를 내게서 없애 주셨다.”	Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26	예수님이 태어나리라는 것을 알려 주시다 여섯째 달에 천사 가브리엘을 하나님이 갈릴래아의 도시로 보내셨다. 그곳 이름은 나사렛이었다.	And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27	어떤 처녀한테로 보내셨는데, 그는 이름이 요셉인 남자와 약혼한 여자였다. 요셉은 다윗 집안의 사람이었다. 처녀의 이름은 마리아였다.	To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28	천사가 집 안으로 들어가서 마리아한테 말했다. “안녕하세요, 특별히 사랑받는 마리아! 주님이 그대와 함께하십니다.”	And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29	마리아는 이 말에 몹시 어리둥절하여, 이런 인사말이 무슨 뜻인지 두루 생각해 보고 있었다.	And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30	그러자 천사가 말했다. “두려워하지 마세요, 마리아! 하나님이 그대에게 특별한 사랑을 베푸셨어요.	And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31	자, 그대는 아이를 가져 아들을 낳을 겁니다. 이름을 예수라고 하세요.	And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32	이 예수는 크게 될 것이고, 더없이 높으신 분의 아들이라 불릴 겁니다. 주 하나님이 그의 조상 다윗의 임금자리를 그에게 주실 겁니다.	He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33	그래서 예수는 야곱의 집을 영원히 임금으로 다스릴 것이고, 그의 왕권은 끝이 없을 겁니다.”	And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34	마리아가 천사한테 물었다. “어떻게 이런 일이 일어나겠습니까? 제가 남자를 알지 못하는데요.”	Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35	천사가 대답했다. “성령님이 그대 위에 내려오시고, 더없이 높으신 분의 능력이 그대를 휘덮을 겁니다. 그래서 태어날 아이도 거룩합니다. 하나님의 아들이라 불릴 겁니다.	And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36	보세요, 그대의 친척 엘리자베스는 늙은 나이에도 아들을 가졌어요. 아이를 갖지 못한다고 하던 여자가 아이를 가진 지 6개월째입니다.	And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37	말씀하시고서 못 하실 일이 하나님께는 하나도 없기 때문입니다.”	For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38	마리아가 말했다. “예, 저는 주님의 종입니다. 당신의 말씀대로 저에게 이루어지기 바랍니다.” 그러자 천사가 마리아한테서 떠나갔다.	And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39	마리아가 엘리자베스를 찾아가 만나다 이즈음에 마리아가 일어나서 서둘러 산지에 있는 유다의 도시로 갔다.	And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40	스가랴의 집으로 들어가서 엘리자베스에게 인사말을 건넸다.	And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41	엘리자베스가 마리아의 인사말을 들었을 때, 아이가 뱃속에서 힘차게 놀았고, 엘리자베스는 성령으로 가득해졌다.	And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42	엘리자베스가 소리 높여 크게 외쳤다. “그대는 여자들 가운데서 복받은 사람! 그대 뱃속의 아이도 복받은 아이!	And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43	이 어떻게 된 일인가? 내 주님의 어머니가 나한테 오시다니!	And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44	보세요, 그대의 인사말 소리가 내 귀에 들렸을 때, 아이가 내 뱃속에서 큰 즐거움으로 힘차게 놀았어요.	For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45	복 있습니다, 주님이 말씀해 주신 것들이 이루어질 것이라고 믿은 여자는요!”	And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46	마리아의 찬양 그러자 마리아가 찬양했다. “높여 드리네, 내 영혼이 주님을!	And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47	기뻐 뛰었네, 내 영이 내 구원자 하나님을 생각하며!	And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48	주님의 종인 나의 낮음을 굽어살피셨기 때문이네. 아, 이제부터는 나를 복 있다고 할 것이네, 모든 세대가!	For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49	나에게 큰일들을 해 주셨네, 능력의 하나님! 거룩하네, 그분의 이름은!	For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50	그분의 한결같은 사랑은 대대로 이어지네, 그분을 두려워하는 사람들에게로.	And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51	그분의 팔로 힘을 드러내 보이셨네. 마음속으로 분수에 넘치게 생각하는 사람들을 흩어 버리셨네.	He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52	권력 쥔 사람들을 그 자리에서 끌어내리시고, 낮은 사람들을 들어 올리셨네.	He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53	굶주린 사람들을 좋은 것으로 배불리 먹여 주셨고, 부자들을 빈손으로 되돌려 보내셨네.	He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54	그분의 막일꾼 이스라엘을 도우셔서, 한결같은 사랑을 잊지 않으셨네.	He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55	우리 조상들한테 말씀해 주신 대로였네. 영원히 아브라함과 그의 후손을 위해서였네.”	As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56	마리아가 엘리자베스 집에서 3개월쯤 같이 지내다가, 자기 집으로 돌아갔다.	And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57	세례자 요한이 태어나다 아이 낳을 때가 차서, 엘리자베스가 아들을 낳았다.	Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58	이웃 사람들과 친척들이, 주님이 엘리자베스에게 한결같은 사랑을 크게 베푸셨다는 것을 듣고서 그와 함께 기뻐했다.	And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59	8일째 되는 날이었다. 그들이 아이에게 할례를 시행하러 왔는데, 아버지의 이름을 따서 아이를 스가랴라고 부르려 했다.	And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60	아이 엄마가 말리며 말했다. “안 돼요. 요한이라고 해야 해요.”	And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61	그들이 아이 엄마한테 말했다. “그대의 친척 가운데 이 이름을 쓴 사람은 없어요.”	And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62	한편, 그들이 아이 아빠에게 아이 이름을 무엇이라고 하려는지 몸짓으로 물어보았다.	And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63	그러자 스가랴가 글씨판을 달라고 해서 ‘아이의 이름은 요한’이라고 썼다. 모두가 놀라워했다.	And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64	곧장 그의 입이 열렸고, 혀도 풀어졌다. 그래서 그는 말하며 하나님을 찬양하기 시작했다.	And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65	이웃 사람들 모두에게 두려움이 생겼고, 유대아의 온 산지에서 이 모든 일이 사람들 입에 오르내렸다.	And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66	들은 사람들이 모두 그것을 마음에 두고서 “이 아이가 과연 무엇이 될까?” 하고 말했다. 주님의 손이 그와 함께 있었기 때문이다.	And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67	스가랴의 찬양과 예언 아이의 아버지 스가랴가 성령으로 가득 차서 예언했다.	And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68	“찬양받으시기를! 주님, 곧 이스라엘의 하나님은! 주님의 백성을 굽어보시고 풀어 주셨기 때문이네.	Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69	또 우리를 위하여 구원의 뿔을 일으키셨네, 주님이 부리시는 종 다윗의 집에서.	And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70	아주 오래전부터 주님의 거룩한 예언자들의 입을 빌려 말씀하셨던 대로였네.	As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71	우리의 원수들과 우리를 미워하는 모든 사람들의 손에서 구원해 주겠다고 하셨었지.	That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72	그렇게 우리 조상들에게 한결같은 사랑을 베푸시고, 주님의 거룩한 언약을 기억해 주셨네.	To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73	우리에게 해 주시기로 우리의 조상 아브라함한테 하신 굳은 약속을.	The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74	원수들의 손에서 건져 내어 두려움 없이 예배하도록 해 주겠다고 하셨네.	That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75	우리의 한평생 주님 앞에서 거룩하고 올바르게 예배하도록.”	In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76	“그리고 바로 너는, 얘야, 더없이 높으신 분의 예언자라 불릴 거야. 먼저 나가서 주님 앞에서 그분의 길을 닦을 거니까.	And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77	그분의 백성에게 구원의 지식을 알려 줄 거니까. 그들이 죄 용서받아 얻는 구원 말이야.	To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78	한결같은 사랑을 베푸시는 우리 하나님의 애타는 마음 때문이지. 그 마음 덕분에 가장 높은 데서 해가 떠올라 우리를 굽어볼 거야.	Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79	어둠 속, 곧 죽음의 그늘에 앉아 있는 사람들에게 빛을 비추어, 우리 발이 평화의 길로 곧장 나아가게 하실 거야.”	To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80	그 아이가 자라났고 영이 강해져 갔다. 이스라엘한테 자신을 드러내는 날까지 광야에서 지냈다.	And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
