1 그때에 맛단의 아들 스바댜와 바스훌의 아들 그달리야와 셀레미야의 아들 유갈과 말기야의 아들 바스훌이 예레미야가 온 백성에게 이른 말들을 들었는데 이르기를, Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,
2 주가 이같이 말하노라. 이 도시에 남아 있는 자는 칼과 기근과 역병에 죽되 갈대아 사람들에게 나아가는 자는 살리니 그는 자기 생명을 탈취물로 얻어서 살리라. Thus saith the Lord, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
3 주가 이같이 말하노라. 이 도시가 반드시 바빌론 왕의 군대의 손에 넘어가리니 그가 이 도시를 취하리라, 하더라. Thus saith the Lord, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.
4 그러므로 그 통치자들이 왕에게 이르되, 이 사람이 이 백성의 번영을 구하지 아니하고 도리어 해를 구하오니 청하건대 이 사람을 죽이소서. 그가 그들에게 그와 같은 말을 하여 이 도시에 남아 있는 군사들의 손과 온 백성의 손을 이같이 약하게 하나이다, 하매 Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
5 그때에 시드기야 왕이 이르되, 보라, 그가 너희 손에 있나니 왕은 너희를 대적하는 어떤 일도 행할 수 없노라, 하니라. Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
6 이에 그들이 예레미야를 붙잡아 함멜렉의 아들 말기야의 지하 감옥 곧 감옥 뜰에 있던 지하 감옥에 던져 넣으며 예레미야를 밧줄로 달아 내리니라. 그 지하 감옥에는 물이 없고 진창뿐이므로 예레미야가 이처럼 진창 속에 빠졌더라. Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
7 ¶이제 왕의 집에 있던 내시들 중의 하나인 에티오피아 사람 에벳멜렉이 그들이 예레미야를 지하 감옥에 넣었다는 것을 들으니라. 그때에 왕이 베냐민의 성문 안에 앉아 있었으므로 Now when Ebed–melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
8 에벳멜렉이 왕의 집에서 나아가 왕에게 아뢰어 이르되, Ebed–melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying,
9 내 주 왕이여, 이 사람들이 대언자 예레미야 즉 자기들이 지하 감옥에 가둔 자에게 행한 모든 일에서 악하게 행하였나이다. 이 도시에 더 이상 빵이 없으므로 그가 지금 있는 곳에서 굶어 죽으리이다, 하니 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
10 그때에 왕이 에티오피아 사람 에벳멜렉에게 명령하여 이르되, 여기서 서른 명을 데리고 가서 대언자 예레미야가 죽기 전에 그를 지하 감옥에서 끌어올리라, 하니라. Then the king commanded Ebed–melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
11 이에 에벳멜렉이 사람들을 데리고 왕의 집으로 가서 보고(寶庫) 밑으로 들어가 거기서 오랫동안 버려둔 헝겊과 오래되어 낡은 누더기를 가져다가 그것들을 지하 감옥의 예레미야에게 밧줄로 내리며 So Ebed–melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
12 에티오피아 사람 에벳멜렉이 예레미야에게 이르되, 오랫동안 버려둔 이 헝겊과 낡은 누더기를 이제 네 두 겨드랑이에 대고 밧줄을 그 밑에 대라, 하니 예레미야가 그리하거늘 And Ebed–melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
13 이에 그들이 밧줄로 예레미야를 끌어올려 지하 감옥에서 끌어올리므로 예레미야가 감옥 뜰에 머무니라. So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
14 ¶그때에 시드기야 왕이 사람을 보내어 대언자 예레미야를 주의 집의 셋째 입구로 데려와 자기에게 이르게 하고 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되, 내가 네게 한 가지 일을 물으리니 내게 아무것도 숨기지 말라, 하거늘 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the Lord: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.
15 그때에 예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되, 내가 그것을 왕께 밝히 말할지라도 왕이 확실히 나를 죽이지 아니하시리이까? 내가 왕께 조언을 드릴지라도 왕이 내 말에 귀를 기울이지 아니하시리이까? 하매 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?
16 이에 시드기야 왕이 예레미야에게 은밀히 맹세하여 이르되, 우리에게 이 혼을 만들어 주신 주께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내가 너를 죽이지 아니하고 또 네 생명을 찾는 이 사람들의 손에 너를 내주지도 아니하리라, 하니라. So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the Lord liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.
17 이에 예레미야가 시드기야에게 이르되, 주 만군의 하나님 곧 이스라엘의 하나님이 이같이 말하노라. 네가 만일 확신을 가지고 바빌론 왕의 통치자들에게로 나아가면 네 혼이 살고 이 도시가 불타지 아니하며 너와 네 집이 살려니와 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
18 네가 만일 바빌론 왕의 통치자들에게로 나아가지 아니하면 이 도시가 갈대아 사람들의 손에 넘어가리니 그들이 이 도시를 불태우고 너도 그들의 손에서 피하지 못하리라, 하매 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.
19 시드기야 왕이 예레미야에게 이르되, 나는 갈대아 사람들에게 항복한 유대인들을 두려워하노라. 그들이 나를 그들의 손에 넘겨주면 그들이 나를 조롱할까 염려하노라, 하였으나 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.
20 예레미야가 이르되, 그들이 왕을 넘겨주지 아니하리이다. 청하건대 내가 왕께 말씀드리는 주의 음성에 순종하소서. 그리하시면 왕이 잘되고 왕의 혼이 살리이다. But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
21 그러나 왕이 만일 나아가기를 거절하시면 주께서 내게 보여 주신 말씀이 이러하니이다. But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the Lord hath shewed me:
22 보라, 유다 왕의 집에 남아 있는 모든 여자가 바빌론 왕의 통치자들에게로 끌려갈 것이요, 그 여자들이 말하기를, 네 친구들이 너를 부추기고 너를 눌러 이겼은즉 네 발이 진창에 빠졌고 그들이 뒤로 물러갔도다, 하리라. And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.
23 그러므로 그들이 네 모든 아내와 네 자녀들을 갈대아 사람들에게로 끌어낼 것이요, 너는 그들의 손에서 피하지 못하고 바빌론 왕의 손에 붙잡히리라. 또 네가 이 도시로 하여금 불사름을 당하게 하리라, 하셨나이다. So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
24 ¶이에 시드기야가 예레미야에게 이르되, 아무도 이 말들을 알지 못하게 하라. 그리하면 네가 죽지 아니하려니와 Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.
25 만일 통치자들이 내가 너와 이야기하였다는 것을 듣고 네게 와서 네게 이르되, 네가 왕에게 말한 것을 이제 우리에게 밝히 말하고 우리에게 숨기지 말라. 그리하면 우리가 너를 죽이지 아니하리라. 또 왕이 네게 말한 것도 밝히 말하라, 하거든 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
26 그때에 너는 그들에게 이르기를, 내가 왕 앞에서 간구 드리되 내가 요나단의 집에서 죽지 않도록 그분께서 나를 거기로 돌아가게 하지 말 것을 구하였노라, 하라, 하니라. Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.
27 그 뒤에 모든 통치자들이 예레미야에게 와서 그에게 물으매 그가 왕이 명령한 이 모든 말대로 그들에게 고하니라. 그 일이 알려지지 아니하였으므로 이에 그들이 그와 말하기를 그치고 떠나니라. Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
28 이처럼 예레미야가 예루살렘이 함락되던 날까지 감옥 뜰에 거하였으며 예루살렘이 함락될 때도 거기 있었더라. So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
