1 이제 대언자 예레미야가 포로로 끌려간 장로들 중의 남은 자들과 또 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에서 바빌론으로 포로로 끌고 간 제사장들과 대언자들과 온 백성에게 예루살렘에서 보낸 편지의 말들이 이러하니라. Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;
2 (이 편지는 여고니야 왕과 왕비와 내시들과 유다와 예루살렘의 통치자들과 목수들과 대장장이들이 예루살렘에서 떠난 뒤에) (After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)
3 (유다 왕 시드기야가 바빌론으로 보내어 바빌론 왕 느부갓네살에게 이르게 한) 사반의 아들 엘라사와 힐기야의 아들 그마랴의 손에 맡긴 것이라. 이르되, By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,
4 나 만군의 주 곧 이스라엘의 하나님이 예루살렘에서 바빌론으로 포로가 되어 끌려가게 하므로 포로로 끌려간 모든 자들에게 이같이 말하노라. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;
5 너희는 집을 짓고 그 안에 거하며 정원을 만들고 거기서 나는 열매를 먹으라. Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;
6 너희는 아내를 취하여 아들딸들을 낳고 너희 아들들을 위하여 아내들을 취하며 너희 딸들을 남편들에게 주어 그들이 아들딸들을 낳게 하고 그리함으로 너희가 거기서 늘어나고 줄어들지 아니하게 하라. Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.
7 또 내가 너희로 하여금 포로가 되어 끌려가게 해서 거하게 한 그 도시의 평안을 구하고 그것을 위하여 주에게 기도하라. 그 도시가 평안하여야 너희도 평안하리라. And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.
8 ¶만군의 주 곧 이스라엘의 하나님이 이같이 말하노라. 너희의 한가운데 있는 너희의 대언자들과 너희의 점쟁이들이 너희를 속이지 못하게 하고 너희가 꾸고자 하여 꾼 너희의 꿈들에 귀를 기울이지 말지니라. For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.
9 그들은 너희에게 내 이름으로 거짓으로 대언하느니라. 내가 그들을 보내지 아니하였느니라. 주가 말하노라. For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.
10 ¶주가 이같이 말하노라. 바빌론에서 칠십 년이 찬 뒤에 내가 너희를 돌아보고 너희를 향한 나의 선한 말을 이행하여 너희를 이곳으로 돌아오게 하리니 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 너희를 향해 내가 생각하는 생각을 내가 아노라. 그것은 평안을 주려는 생각이요, 재앙을 주려는 생각이 아니니 곧 기대하던 결말을 너희에게 주려는 것이라. 주가 말하노라. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 그때에는 너희가 나를 부르고 가서 내게 기도하리니 내가 너희 말에 귀를 기울이리라. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 또 너희가 너희 마음을 다하여 나를 찾으면 나를 찾고 나를 만나리라. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
14 내가 너희를 만나리라. 주가 말하노라. 또 내가 너희의 포로 된 것을 되돌리고 모든 민족들로부터, 내가 너희를 쫓아내어 머물게 한 모든 곳으로부터 너희를 모으리라. 주가 말하노라. 또 내가 너희를 다시 데려오되 내가 너희로 하여금 포로가 되어 끌려가서 떠나게 했던 곳으로 데려오리라. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
15 ¶너희가 말하기를, 주께서 우리를 위하여 바빌론에서 대언자들을 일으키셨다, 하였으므로 Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;
16 다윗의 왕좌에 앉는 왕과 이 도시에 거하는 온 백성과 너희와 함께 포로가 되어 나아가지 아니한 너희 형제들에 대하여 주가 이같이 말하는 것을 알라. Know that thus saith the Lord of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;
17 만군의 주가 이같이 말하노라. 보라, 내가 그들에게 칼과 기근과 역병을 보내어 그들을 심히 나빠서 먹을 수 없는 몹쓸 무화과들같이 만들리라. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
18 또 내가 칼과 기근과 역병으로 그들을 핍박하고 그들을 넘겨주어 땅의 모든 왕국으로 옮겨가게 하며 또 내가 그들을 쫓아내어 함께 거하게 한 모든 민족들 가운데서 저주와 놀랄 일과 비웃음거리와 치욕거리가 되게 하리라. And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:
19 주가 말하노라. 그 까닭은 내가 일찍 일어나 그들에게 보내고 보낸 나의 종 대언자들이 전한 내 말들에 그들이 귀를 기울이지 아니하였기 때문이라. 너희가 들으려 하지 아니하느니라. 주가 말하노라. Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the Lord, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the Lord.
20 ¶그런즉 내가 예루살렘에서 바빌론으로 보낸 너희 모든 포로들아, 너희는 주의 말을 들을지니라. Hear ye therefore the word of the Lord, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:
21 만군의 주 곧 이스라엘의 하나님이 골라야의 아들 아합과 마아세야의 아들 시드기야에 대해 이같이 말하노라. 이들은 내 이름으로 너희에게 거짓을 대언하는 자들이라. 보라, 내가 그들을 바빌론 왕 느부갓레살의 손에 넘겨주리니 그가 그들을 너희 눈앞에서 죽이리라. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;
22 바빌론에 있는 유다의 모든 포로들이 그들을 저주거리로 삼아 말하기를, 주께서 너를 바빌론 왕이 불에 구운 시드기야와 아합 같게 하시기를 원하노라, 하리니 And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The Lord make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;
23 이는 그들이 이스라엘 안에서 나쁜 짓을 저지르고 자기 이웃의 아내들과 간음하며 또 내가 그들에게 명령하지 아니한 거짓말들을 내 이름으로 말하였기 때문이라. 내가 그것을 아나니 내가 증인이니라. 주가 말하노라. Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the Lord.
24 ¶너는 또한 느헬람 사람 스마야에게 이같이 말하여 이르라. Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,
25 만군의 주 곧 이스라엘의 하나님이 이같이 말하여 이르노라. 네가 네 이름으로 예루살렘에 있는 온 백성과 제사장 마아세야의 아들 스바냐와 모든 제사장에게 편지들을 보내어 이르기를, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,
26 주께서 너를 제사장 여호야다 대신 제사장으로 삼으신 것은 미쳐서 스스로 대언자라 하는 모든 자로 인해 너희가 주의 집에서 직무 수행자들이 되게 하려 하심이라. 따라서 네가 그를 감옥에 넣고 차꼬를 채워야 하리라. The Lord hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the Lord, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
27 이제 그러한대 네가 어찌하여 너희에게 스스로 대언자라 하는 아나돗의 예레미야를 책망하지 아니하였느냐? Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?
28 그러므로 그가 바빌론에 있는 우리에게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 이 포로 생활이 길리니 너희는 집을 짓고 거기 거하며 정원을 만들고 거기서 나는 열매를 먹으라, 하였느니라, 하였도다. For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
29 제사장 스바냐가 이 편지를 대언자 예레미야의 귀에 읽어 주니라. And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.
30 ¶그때에 주의 말씀이 예레미야에게 임하니라. 이르시되, Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,
31 포로 된 모든 자들에게 사람을 보내어 이르기를, 주가 느헬람 사람 스마야에 관하여 이같이 말하노라. 내가 스마야를 보내지 아니하였는데도 그가 너희에게 대언하고 너희로 하여금 거짓을 신뢰하게 하였도다. Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the Lord concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:
32 그러므로 주가 이같이 말하노라. 보라, 내가 느헬람 사람 스마야와 그의 씨를 벌하리라. 그에게는 이 백성 가운데 거할 자가 하나도 없을 것이요, 또 내가 내 백성을 위해 행하려 하는 선한 일을 그가 보지 못하리니 이는 그가 주에게 반역하는 것을 가르쳤기 때문이라. 주가 말하노라, 하라. Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the Lord; because he hath taught rebellion against the Lord.
