1 시리아 왕 벤하닷이 자기의 온 군대를 함께 모으니 서른두 명의 왕이 그와 함께 있었고 또 말과 병거들이 있더라. 그가 올라가서 사마리아를 에워싸고 그곳을 대적하여 싸움을 하며 And Ben–hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2 사자들을 그 도시 안으로 이스라엘 왕 아합에게 보내어 그에게 이르기를, 벤하닷이 이같이 말하노라. And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben–hadad,
3 네 은과 금은 내 것이요, 네 아내들과 네 자녀들 곧 가장 잘생긴 자들도 내 것이니라, 하매 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4 이스라엘 왕이 응답하여 이르기를, 오 내 주 왕이여, 왕의 말씀대로 나와 내가 가진 모든 것은 왕의 것이니이다, 하니라. And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5 사자들이 다시 와서 이르되, 벤하닷이 이같이 말하여 이르노라. 내가 이미 네게 사람을 보내어 말하기를, 너는 네 은과 금과 아내들과 자녀들을 내게 넘기라, 하였거니와 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben–hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6 내일 이맘때에 내가 내 신하들을 네게 보낼 터인즉 그들이 네 집과 네 신하들의 집을 뒤져서 네 눈이 기뻐하는 것은 무엇이든지 자기들의 손에 담아 가져가리라, 하니라. Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7 이에 이스라엘 왕이 그 땅의 모든 장로를 불러 이르되, 청하건대 이 사람이 화를 끼치려 하는 줄을 보고 주목하라. 그가 내 아내들과 자녀들과 은과 금을 취하려고 사람을 내게 보내었으나 내가 그의 요구를 거절하지 못하였노라, 하니 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8 모든 장로와 온 백성이 그에게 이르되, 그의 말에 귀를 기울이지도 말고 동의하지도 마옵소서, 하니라. And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9 그러므로 그가 벤하닷의 사자들에게 이르되, 내 주 왕께 고하기를, 왕이 처음에 사람을 보내어 주의 종에게 구하신 모든 것은 내가 하려니와 이 일은 내가 할 수 없나이다, 하라, 하니 사자들이 떠나가서 그에게 말을 다시 전하니라. Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben–hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10 벤하닷이 그에게 사람을 보내어 이르되, 사마리아의 흙이 나를 따르는 온 백성의 손에 쥐어질 만큼 충분하다면 신들이 내게 벌을 내리고 더욱 더 내리시기를 원하노라, 하매 And Ben–hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11 이스라엘 왕이 응답하여 이르되, 그에게 고하기를, 자기 갑옷을 입는 자는 갑옷을 벗는 자같이 자랑하지 말지니라, 하라, 하니라. And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12 벤하닷이 왕들과 천막에서 마시다가 이 소식을 듣고는 자기 신하들에게 이르되, 너희는 전열을 갖추라, 하매 그들이 그 도시를 향하여 전열을 갖추니라. And it came to pass, when Ben–hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13 ¶보라, 한 대언자가 이스라엘 왕 아합에게 나아와 이르되, 주가 이같이 말하노라. 네가 이 온 큰 무리를 보았느냐? 보라, 내가 이 날 그 무리를 네 손에 넘겨주리니 내가 주인 줄을 네가 알리라, 하거늘 And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
14 아합이 이르되, 누구를 통해 그리하시리이까? 하니 그가 이르되, 주가 이같이 말하노라. 여러 지방의 통치자들의 청년들을 통해 그리하리라, 하매 이에 그가 이르되, 누가 싸움을 지시하리이까? 하니 그가 대답하되, 왕이니이다, 하거늘 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15 이에 그가 여러 지방의 통치자들의 청년들의 수를 세니 그들이 이백삼십이 명이요, 그들을 센 뒤에 그가 온 백성 곧 이스라엘의 모든 자손의 수를 세니 칠천 명이더라. Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16 그들이 정오에 나갔으나 벤하닷은 왕들 곧 자기를 돕는 서른두 명의 왕과 함께 천막에서 마시고 취하였더라. And they went out at noon. But Ben–hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17 여러 지방의 통치자들의 청년들이 먼저 나갔더라. 벤하닷이 사람들을 보내었더니 그들이 그에게 고하여 이르되, 사마리아에서 사람들이 나오더이다, 하매 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben–hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 그가 이르되, 그들이 화친하러 나올지라도 그들을 산 채로 사로잡고 싸우러 나올지라도 산 채로 사로잡으라, 하니라. And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19 이에 여러 지방의 통치자들의 이 청년들과 그들을 따르는 군대가 도시에서 나가 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20 그들이 각각 자기가 맡은 사람을 죽이매 시리아 사람들이 도망하므로 이스라엘이 그들을 추격하니 시리아 왕 벤하닷이 말을 타고 기병들과 함께 도망하니라. And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben–hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21 이스라엘 왕이 나가서 말과 병거를 치고 또 시리아 사람들을 죽이고 크게 살육하였더라. And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 ¶그 대언자가 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 그에게 이르되, 가서 힘을 키우고 왕이 행하는 일을 주목하고 보소서. 해가 돌아오면 시리아 왕이 왕을 치러 올라오리이다, 하니라. And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23 시리아 왕의 신하들이 그에게 이르되, 그들의 신들은 산의 신들이므로 그들이 우리보다 강하였거니와 우리가 평야에서 그들과 싸우게 하소서. 우리가 반드시 그들보다 강하리이다. And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 이 일을 행하소서. 왕들을 곧 각 사람을 그의 처소에서 떠나게 하시고 그들 대신 대장들을 두시며 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25 또 왕께서 전에 잃어버린 군대와 같은 군대를 왕을 위하여 계수하시고 말은 말대로 병거는 병거대로 그리하소서. 우리가 평야에서 그들과 싸우면 반드시 그들보다 강하리이다, 하매 그가 그들의 음성에 귀를 기울이고 그리하니라. And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26 해가 돌아오매 벤하닷이 시리아 사람들의 수를 세고 아벡으로 올라와 이스라엘과 싸우려 하매 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben–hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 이스라엘 자손도 수를 세고 모두 참가하여 그들을 향해 갔더라. 이스라엘 자손은 그들 앞에서 두 무리의 작은 염소 새끼 떼같이 진을 쳤으나 시리아 사람들은 그 지역에 가득하였더라. And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28 ¶하나님의 사람이 나아와 이스라엘 왕에게 말하여 이르되, 주가 이같이 말하노라. 시리아 사람들이 말하기를, 주는 산의 신이요, 골짜기의 신은 아니라, 하였도다. 그러므로 내가 이 온 큰 무리를 네 손에 넘겨주리니 내가 주인 줄을 너희가 알리라, 하니라. And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the Lord, Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
29 그들이 이레 동안 서로 마주보며 진을 치니라. 일곱째 날에 싸움이 붙어 이스라엘 자손이 하루에 시리아 사람들의 보병 십만 명을 죽이니라. And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30 그러나 그 남은 자들이 아벡으로 도망하여 도시로 들어갔더니 성벽이 그 남은 자들 중에서 이만 칠천 명 위에 무너져 내리고 벤하닷은 도망하여 도시에 이르러 안에 있는 방으로 들어가니라. But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben–hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31 ¶그의 신하들이 그에게 이르되, 이제 보소서, 우리가 들었는데 이스라엘의 집 왕들은 긍휼이 많은 왕들이라 하더이다. 원하건대 우리가 굵은 베를 허리에 두르고 밧줄을 머리에 묶고 이스라엘 왕에게로 나가게 하소서. 그가 혹시 왕의 생명을 살려 주리이다, 하고는 And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32 이에 그들이 굵은 베를 허리에 두르고 밧줄을 머리에 묶고 이스라엘 왕에게 나아와 이르되, 왕의 종 벤하닷이 말하기를, 원하건대 나를 살려 주옵소서, 하나이다, 하니 그가 이르되, 그가 아직 살아 있느냐? 그는 내 형제니라, 하매 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben–hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33 이제 그 사람들이 그에게서 무슨 말이 나올지 부지런히 살피다가 얼른 그 말을 받아 이르되, 벤하닷은 왕의 형제니이다, 하니 그때에 그가 이르되, 너희는 가서 그를 데려오라, 하니라. 이에 벤하닷이 그에게 나아오매 그가 그를 병거에 올라타게 하니라. Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben–hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben–hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34 벤하닷이 그에게 이르되, 내 아버지가 당신의 아버지에게서 빼앗은 도시들을 내가 돌려보내리이다. 또 내 아버지가 사마리아에 거리를 만든 것 같이 당신도 다마스쿠스에 당신을 위하여 거리를 만드소서, 하니 이에 아합이 이르되, 내가 이 언약을 주며 당신을 보내리라, 하고는 이에 그와 언약을 맺고 그를 보내니라. And Ben–hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35 ¶대언자들의 아들들 중의 어떤 사람이 주의 말씀으로 자기 이웃에게 이르되, 원하건대 나를 치라, 하였는데 그 사람이 치기를 거부하므로 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36 이에 그가 그 사람에게 이르되, 네가 주의 음성에 순종하지 아니하였은즉, 보라, 네가 나를 떠나갈 때에 곧바로 사자가 너를 죽이리라, 하니 그 사람이 그를 떠나가매 곧바로 사자가 그를 만나 그를 죽였더라. Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 그때에 그가 또 다른 사람을 만나 이르되, 원하건대 나를 치라, 하매 그 사람이 그를 치되 상하도록 치니라. Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38 이에 그 대언자가 떠나서 자기 얼굴에 재를 묻혀 변장하고 길가에서 왕을 기다리다가 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39 왕이 지나갈 때에 왕에게 소리 질러 이르되, 왕의 종이 전쟁의 한가운데로 나갔는데, 보소서, 한 사람이 돌이켜 어떤 사람을 끌고 내게로 와서 말하기를, 이 사람을 지키라. 어찌 되었든지 그를 잃어버리면 네 생명으로 그의 생명을 대신하거나 그렇지 아니하면 네가 은 일 달란트를 주어야 하리라, 하였나이다. And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 그런데 왕의 종이 여기저기서 바쁘게 지내는 동안에 그가 없어졌나이다, 하니 이스라엘 왕이 그에게 이르되, 네가 스스로 결정하였은즉 너에 대한 재판이 그와 같이 될지니라, 하매 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41 그가 급히 자기 얼굴에서 재를 없앤즉 이스라엘 왕이 그를 분별하되 그가 대언자들에 속한 사람인 줄 분별하니라. And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42 그가 그에게 이르되, 주가 이같이 말하노라. 내가 진멸하기로 작정한 사람을 네가 네 손에서 놓아주었은즉 네 생명이 그의 생명을 대신하고 네 백성이 그의 백성을 대신하리라, 하매 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 이스라엘 왕이 근심하며 기뻐하지 아니하고 자기 집으로 돌아가 사마리아에 이르니라. And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
