1 이제 주께서 남겨 두신 민족들이 이러하니 이것은 그들을 통해 이스라엘 곧 가나안의 모든 전쟁을 알지 못한 이스라엘의 많은 자들을 시험하려 하심이요, Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2 이스라엘 자손의 세대들 즉 적어도 전에 그 전쟁에 대해 알지 못하는 자들에게 전쟁을 가르쳐 그들이 알게 하려 하심이라. Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3 그들은 곧 블레셋 사람들의 다섯 귀족과 모든 가나안 족속과 시돈 사람들과 바알헤르몬 산에서부터 하맛의 입구까지의 레바논 산에 거하던 히위 족속이라. Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal–hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4 그들은 이스라엘을 시험하기 위한 자들이었으니 이것은 그들이 주의 명령 곧 그분께서 모세의 손으로 그들의 조상들에게 명령하신 명령에 귀를 기울이려 하는지 알고자 함이었더라. And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 ¶이스라엘 자손이 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 히위 족속과 여부스 족속 가운데 거하면서 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6 그들의 딸들을 취하여 자기 아내로 삼으며 자기 딸들을 그들의 아들들에게 주고 또 그들의 신들을 섬겼으며 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7 또 이스라엘 자손이 주의 눈앞에서 악을 행하여 주 자기들의 하나님을 잊어버리고 바알들과 작은 숲들을 섬겼더라. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
8 ¶그러므로 주의 분노가 이스라엘을 향하여 맹렬히 타올라 그분께서 그들을 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임의 손에 파시매 이스라엘 자손이 구산리사다임을 팔년 동안 섬겼더라. Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan–rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan–rishathaim eight years.
9 이스라엘 자손이 주께 부르짖으매 주께서 이스라엘 자손을 위하여 한 구출자를 일으키사 그들을 건져 내게 하셨으니 곧 갈렙의 동생이요, 그나스의 아들인 옷니엘이더라. And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 주의 영께서 그에게 임하셨으므로 그가 이스라엘을 재판하였으며 또 그가 나가서 싸울 때에 주께서 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임을 그의 손에 넘겨주시매 그의 손이 구산리사다임을 이기니라. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushan–rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan–rishathaim.
11 그 땅에 사십 년 동안 안식이 있었고 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 죽었더라. And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 ¶이스라엘 자손이 주의 눈앞에서 다시 악을 행하니라. 그들이 주의 눈앞에서 악을 행하므로 주께서 모압 왕 에글론을 강성하게 하사 이스라엘을 치게 하시매 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
13 그가 암몬과 아말렉 자손을 모으고 나와서 이스라엘을 치며 종려나무 도시를 소유하였으므로 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
14 이에 이스라엘 자손이 모압 왕 에글론을 십팔 년 동안 섬기니라. So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15 그러나 이스라엘 자손이 주께 부르짖으매 주께서 그들을 위하여 한 구출자를 일으키셨으니 곧 베냐민 족속 게라의 아들 왼손잡이 에훗이더라. 이스라엘 자손이 그를 시켜 모압 왕 에글론에게 예물을 보내니라. But when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
16 그러나 에훗이 길이가 일 큐빗이고 양쪽에 날이 선 칼을 만들어 옷 밑으로 오른쪽 넓적다리에 그것을 차고 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
17 모압 왕 에글론에게 예물을 가져갔는데 에글론은 살이 많이 찐 자더라. And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
18 에훗이 예물 바치기를 마친 뒤에 예물을 메고 온 자들을 보내고 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
19 자기는 길갈 옆의 돌 뜨는 곳에서부터 되돌아와 이르되, 오 왕이여, 내가 왕에게 은밀한 용건이 있나이다, 하니 왕이 말하여, 조용히 하라, 하매 그 곁에 섰던 모든 자들이 그에게서 물러가므로 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
20 에훗이 그에게 갔는데 그는 자기만을 위해 소유한 여름 거실에 앉아 있더라. 에훗이 이르되, 내가 하나님께 받아 왕에게 드릴 말씀이 있나이다, 하매 그가 자리에서 일어나니 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
21 에훗이 자기의 왼손을 내밀어 자기의 오른쪽 넓적다리에서 칼을 빼서 그의 배를 찌르매 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
22 칼자루도 날을 따라 들어갔고 기름이 칼날에 엉기므로 그가 칼을 그의 배에서 빼지 못하였으며 오물이 나오더라. And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
23 그때에 에훗이 현관을 통해 나오고 그를 가리기 위해 거실의 문들을 닫아 잠그니라. Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
24 에훗이 나간 뒤에 그의 신하들이 와서, 보라, 거실의 문들이 잠겼음을 보고는 이르되, 왕이 분명히 여름 거실에서 발을 덮으신다, 하고 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
25 스스로 부끄럽게 될 때까지 오래 기다렸으나, 보라, 그가 거실 문들을 열지 아니하므로 그들이 열쇠를 취하여 문들을 여니, 보라, 자기들의 주(主)가 땅에 쓰러져 죽었더라. And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
26 그들이 기다리는 동안 에훗은 도망하여 돌 뜨는 곳을 지나 스이랏으로 도망하니라. And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
27 그가 와서 에브라임 산에서 나팔을 불매 이스라엘 자손이 산에서부터 그와 함께 내려오니 그가 그들보다 앞서 가며 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
28 그들에게 이르되, 나를 따르라. 주께서 너희 원수 모압 족속을 너희 손에 넘겨주셨느니라, 하매 그들이 그를 따라 내려가서 모압을 향한 요르단의 여울을 점령하여 한 사람도 건너지 못하게 하고 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the Lord hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
29 그때에 모압 사람 만 명가량을 죽였는데 그들은 다 건장한 자들이요, 다 용맹한 자들이었더라. 거기서 한 사람도 도망하지 못하였더라. And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
30 이처럼 그 날에 모압이 이스라엘의 손 밑에 굴복하매 그 땅에 팔십 년 동안 안식이 있었더라. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
31 ¶에훗 이후에 아낫의 아들 삼갈이 있었는데 그가 소를 모는 가시 채로 블레셋 사람 육백 명을 죽였고 그도 이스라엘을 건져 내었더라. And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
