1 그때에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었고 또 그때에 단 족속의 지파는 자기들이 들어가 거할 수 있는 상속의 땅을 구하는 중이더라. 그 날까지 그들의 모든 상속 재산이 이스라엘 지파들 가운데서 그들에게 떨어지지 아니하였더라. In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
2 단 자손이 자기들의 지역 곧 소라와 에스다올에서부터 자기들의 가족 중에서 다섯 사람의 용사를 보내어 땅을 정탐하고 살펴보게 하며 그들에게 이르되, 가서 땅을 살펴보라, 하매 그들이 에브라임 산에 가서 미가의 집에 이르러 거기 머무니라. And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.
3 그들이 미가의 집 옆에 이르렀을 때에 젊은 레위 사람의 음성을 알아듣고 거기로 돌이켜서 그에게 이르되, 누가 너를 여기로 데려왔느냐? 네가 이곳에서 무엇을 만드느냐? 네가 여기에서 무엇을 얻느냐? 하니 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
4 그가 그들에게 이르되, 미가가 나를 이러이러하게 대우하여 나를 고용하였으며 내가 그의 제사장이 되었노라, 하매 And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.
5 그들이 그에게 이르되, 원하건대 하나님께 조언을 구하여 우리가 가는 길이 형통할지 우리가 알게 하라, 하거늘 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
6 그 제사장이 그들에게 이르되, 평안히 가라. 너희가 가는 길이 주 앞에 있느니라, 하니라. And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the Lord is your way wherein ye go.
7 ¶이에 다섯 사람이 떠나서 라이스에 이르러 그 안에 있던 백성을 보았는데 그들은 시돈 사람들의 방식대로 평온하고 안전하게 염려 없이 거하였으며 또 그 땅에는 어떤 일에서도 그들에게 모욕을 줄 행정관이 없었고 또 그들은 시돈 사람들로부터 멀리 떨어져 있었으므로 어떤 사람과도 상관하지 아니하였더라. Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
8 그들이 소라와 에스다올로 와서 자기 형제들에게 이르매 그들의 형제들이 그들에게 이르되, 너희는 무어라 말하려느냐? 하니 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
9 그들이 이르되, 일어나 우리가 그들을 치러 올라가자. 우리가 그 땅을 보았는데, 보라, 그것이 매우 좋으니라. 너희가 가만히 있느냐? 가서 그 땅을 소유하러 들어가기를 게을리 하지 말라. And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
10 너희가 가면 평안한 백성과 넓은 땅을 만나리니 하나님께서 그 땅을 너희 손에 주셨느니라. 그곳은 땅에 있는 것 중 어떤 것도 부족한 것이 없는 곳이니라, 하니라. When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
11 ¶거기서부터 단 족속의 가족 중에서 임명을 받은 육백 명이 전쟁 무기를 가지고 소라와 에스다올을 떠나 And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
12 올라가서 유다의 기럇여아림에 진을 쳤으므로 그들이 그곳을 이 날까지 마하네단이라 하였더라. 보라, 그곳은 기럇여아림 뒤에 있느니라. And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath–jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh–dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath–jearim.
13 그들이 거기를 떠나 에브라임 산으로 가서 미가의 집에 이르니라. And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14 ¶전에 라이스 지방을 탐지하러 갔던 다섯 사람이 그때에 자기 형제들에게 응답하여 이르되, 이 집들 안에 에봇과 드라빔과 새긴 형상과 부어 만든 형상이 있는 줄을 너희가 아느냐? 그런즉 이제 너희는 마땅히 행할 바를 깊이 생각하라, 하고는 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
15 그들이 그쪽을 향해 돌이켜서 청년 레위 사람의 집 곧 미가의 집에 이르러 그에게 인사하니 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.
16 단 자손 중에서 임명을 받은 육백 명이 전쟁 무기를 가지고 문 입구에 서니라. And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.
17 그 땅을 탐지하러 갔던 다섯 사람이 올라가서 거기로 들어가 새긴 형상과 에봇과 드라빔과 부어 만든 형상을 취할 때에 그 제사장은 임명을 받아 전쟁 무기를 지닌 육백 명과 함께 문 입구에 서 있었더라. And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
18 이 사람들이 미가의 집에 들어가서 그 새긴 형상과 에봇과 드라빔과 부어 만든 형상을 가져오매 그때에 그 제사장이 그들에게 이르되, 너희가 무엇을 하느냐? 하거늘 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
19 그들이 그에게 이르되, 잠잠하라. 네 손을 입에 대라. 우리와 함께 가서 우리에게 아버지와 제사장이 되라. 네가 한 사람의 집의 제사장이 되는 것이 낫겠느냐, 혹은 이스라엘 안의 한 가족 곧 한 지파의 제사장이 되는 것이 낫겠느냐? 하니 And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
20 그 제사장이 마음속으로 기뻐하여 에봇과 드라빔과 새긴 형상을 취하고 그 백성의 한가운데로 들어가니라. And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
21 이처럼 그들이 돌이켜서 떠나며 어린것들과 가축과 물품을 자기들 앞에 두었더라. So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
22 ¶그들이 미가의 집에서 멀리 떨어졌을 때에 미가의 집에 가까이 있던 집들의 사람들이 함께 모여 단 자손을 따라잡고 And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.
23 단 자손을 향해 소리를 지르므로 그들이 얼굴을 돌이켜 미가에게 이르되, 무엇이 너를 괴롭게 하기에 네가 이 무리와 함께 오느냐? 하매 And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
24 미가가 이르되, 내가 만든 신들과 제사장을 너희가 취하여 갔으니 내게 무엇이 더 남아 있느냐? 너희가 나더러, 무엇이 너를 괴롭게 하느냐? 하니 이것이 도대체 무슨 말이냐, 하매 And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
25 단 자손이 그에게 이르되, 네 목소리가 우리 가운데 들리지 않게 하라. 성난 자들이 네게 달려들므로 네가 네 생명과 네 집안사람들의 생명을 잃게 될까 염려하노라, 하고 And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.
26 단 자손이 자기들의 길로 가매 미가가 단 자손이 자기가 상대하기에 너무 강한 것을 보고는 돌이켜 자기 집으로 돌아갔더라. And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
27 단 자손이 미가가 만든 것들과 그의 제사장을 취한 뒤 라이스에 이르러 평온하고 평안한 백성을 만나 칼날로 그들을 치고 그 도시를 불로 태우되 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
28 구출할 자가 아무도 없었으니 이는 그 도시가 벧르흡 옆 골짜기에 있었으므로 시돈에서 거리가 멀었고 또 그들이 어떤 사람과도 상관하지 아니하였기 때문이더라. 그들이 도시를 건축하고 그 안에 거하며 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth–rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
29 이스라엘에게 태어난 자기들의 조상 단의 이름을 따라 그 도시의 이름을 단이라 하였으나 그 도시의 이름은 처음에 라이스더라. And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
30 ¶단 자손이 그 새긴 형상을 세웠으며 므낫세의 손자요, 게르솜의 아들인 요나단과 그의 아들들은 그 땅이 포로로 사로잡혀 가는 날까지 단 지파의 제사장이 되니라. And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
31 하나님의 집이 실로에 있던 모든 기간에 그들이 자기들을 위하여 미가가 만든 그 새긴 형상을 세웠더라. And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
