1 주께서 여리고에 가까운 요르단 옆 모압 평야에서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되, And the Lord spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
2 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 그들이 자기들 소유의 상속 재산에서 레위 사람들에게 도시들을 주어 그 안에 거하게 하라. 또한 너희는 그 도시들 사방의 주변 지역을 레위 사람들에게 도시로 주어 Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
3 그 도시들은 그들이 거하는 곳이 되게 하고 그것들의 주변 지역은 그들의 가축과 물건과 모든 짐승을 둘 곳이 되게 할지니라. And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.
4 너희가 레위 사람들에게 줄 도시들의 주변 지역은 도시의 성벽에서부터 밖으로 사방 천 큐빗이 되리라. And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
5 너희는 도시를 한가운데 두고 도시의 밖에서부터 동쪽 편으로 이천 큐빗, 남쪽 편으로 이천 큐빗, 서쪽 편으로 이천 큐빗, 북쪽 편으로 이천 큐빗을 측량할지니 이것이 그들을 위하여 도시들의 주변 지역이 될 것이니라. And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.
6 너희가 레위 사람들에게 줄 도시들 가운데서 여섯 도시는 사람을 죽인 자를 위해 도피 도시로 지정하여 그가 거기로 도피하게 할 것이요, 또 너희는 그 도시들 외에 마흔두 개의 도시를 더할지니라. And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities.
7 이와 같이 너희가 레위 사람들에게 줄 모든 도시가 마흔여덟 개니 너희는 도시들과 함께 그것들의 주변 지역도 줄지니라. So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.
8 너희가 이스라엘 자손의 소유에서 취해 도시들을 줄 때에 많이 가진 자에게서는 많이 취하여 주고 적게 가진 자에게서는 적게 취하여 줄지니 각 사람이 자기가 상속받는 상속 재산에 따라 자기 도시들 중에서 레위 사람들에게 줄지니라. And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
9 ¶주께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되, And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
10 이스라엘 자손에게 말하고 그들에게 이르라. 너희가 요르단을 건너 가나안 땅에 들어가거든 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
11 너희를 위해 도시들을 도피 도시로 지정하여 알지 못하고 사람을 죽이는 자가 거기로 도피하게 할지니라. Then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
12 너희를 위해 그 도시들이 복수하는 자로부터 도피하게 하는 도피 도시가 될지니 이것은 사람을 죽인 자가 회중 앞에 서서 재판을 받을 때까지 죽지 아니하게 하려 함이니라. And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
13 너희는 너희가 줄 이 도시들 중에서 여섯 도시를 도피 도시로 만들되 And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.
14 세 도시는 요르단 이편에서 주고 세 도시는 가나안 땅에서 주어 도피 도시가 되게 할지니라. Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.
15 이 여섯 도시는 이스라엘 자손과 타국인과 그들 가운데 머무는 자를 위한 도피처가 되리니 이것은 알지 못하고 사람을 죽이는 자가 다 거기로 도피하게 하려 함이니라. These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.
16 만일 그가 쇠 연장으로 사람을 쳐서 죽이면 그는 살인자니 그 살인자를 반드시 죽일 것이요, And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
17 만일 그가 사람을 죽이는 데 쓸 수 있는 돌을 던져 사람을 쳐서 죽이면 그는 살인자니 그 살인자를 반드시 죽일 것이며 And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
18 만일 그가 사람을 죽이는 데 쓸 수 있는 나무 무기를 손에 들고 사람을 쳐서 죽이면 그는 살인자니 그 살인자를 반드시 죽일 것이니라. Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
19 피를 복수하는 자가 그 살인자를 직접 죽일지니 그가 그를 만나거든 그를 죽일지니라. The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.
20 그러나 만일 그가 미워하는 까닭에 그를 밀쳐 죽이거나 숨어 있다가 무엇을 던져 죽이거나 But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;
21 적개심으로 인하여 손으로 쳐서 죽이면 그를 친 자를 반드시 죽일지니 그는 살인자니라. 피를 복수하는 자가 그 살인자를 만나거든 그를 죽일 것이니라. Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
22 그러나 그가 적개심을 품지 않고 갑자기 사람을 밀치거나 숨어 있지 않다가 그에게 무엇을 던지거나 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,
23 그를 보지 못하고 사람을 죽이는 데 쓸 수 있는 돌을 던져서 그를 죽였으나 그가 그의 원수도 아니요, 그를 해치려 하지도 아니하였으면 Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:
24 회중이 사람을 죽인 자와 피를 복수하는 자 사이에서 이 판단의 법도에 따라 재판하여 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:
25 피를 복수하는 자의 손에서 사람을 죽인 자를 건져 내고 그의 도피 도시 곧 그가 도피한 도피 도시로 그를 돌려보낼 것이요, 그는 거룩한 기름으로 기름 부음을 받은 대제사장이 죽을 때까지 그 안에 거할 것이니라. And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil.
26 그러나 사람을 죽인 자가 어느 때든지 자기가 도피한 도피 도시의 경계 밖으로 나가면 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;
27 피를 복수하는 자가 그의 도피 도시의 경계 밖에서 사람을 죽인 자를 만나 그를 죽일지라도 그 피에 관하여 죄가 없으리니 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
28 이는 대제사장이 죽을 때까지 그가 자기의 도피 도시에 거하여야만 하였기 때문이라. 다만 대제사장이 죽은 뒤에는 사람을 죽인 자가 자기 소유의 땅으로 돌아가리라. Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
29 이와 같이 이것들이 너희 대대로 너희가 거하는 모든 곳에서 너희에게 재판의 법규가 될지니라. So these things shall be for a statute of judgment unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
30 사람을 죽이는 자가 누구든지 증인들의 입에 의거하여 그 살인자를 죽일 것이나 한 증인이 어떤 사람을 대적하며 증언하여 그가 죽게 하지 말지니라. Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
31 또 너희는 죽을죄를 진 살인자의 생명을 구하기 위해 배상을 받지 말고 반드시 그를 죽일 것이며 Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
32 또 그 제사장이 죽기 전에는 자기의 도피 도시로 도피한 자를 위해 배상을 받음으로 그가 돌아가 그 땅에 거하지 못하게 할지니라. And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
33 이와 같이 너희는 너희가 거하는 땅을 더럽히지 말지니라. 피는 땅을 더럽히나니 피가 흘려진 땅은 그 피를 흘리게 한 자의 피로 말미암지 않고서는 그 피로부터 깨끗하게 될 수 없느니라. So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
34 그러므로 너희가 거주할 땅 곧 내가 거하는 땅을 더럽히지 말라. 나 주는 이스라엘 자손 가운데 거하느니라. Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.
