1 그러면 내가 말하노니, 하나님께서 자신의 백성을 버리셨느냐? 결코 그럴 수 없느니라. 나도 이스라엘 사람이요, 아브라함의 씨에서 난 자요, 베냐민 지파에 속한 자니라. I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 하나님께서 자신이 미리 아신 자신의 백성을 버리지 아니하셨나니 너희가 성경 기록이 엘리야에 대해 말하는 것을 알지 못하느냐? 그가 이스라엘을 대적하며 하나님께 중보하여 이르되, God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,
3 주여, 그들이 주의 대언자들을 죽이고 주의 제단들을 파헤쳤으며 나만 홀로 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명도 찾나이다, 하나 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
4 그에게 주신 하나님의 대답이 무어라 말하느냐? 내가 나를 위하여 바알의 형상에게 무릎을 꿇지 아니한 사람 칠천 명을 남겨 두었노라, 하나니 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
5 그런즉 이와 같이 이 현 시대에도 은혜의 선택에 따라 남은 자가 있느니라. Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
6 만일 은혜로 된 것이면 그것이 더 이상 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 그렇지 않으면 은혜가 더 이상 은혜가 아니니라. 그러나 만일 그것이 행위에서 난 것이면 더 이상 은혜가 아니니 그렇지 않으면 행위가 더 이상 행위가 아니니라. And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
7 그런즉 어떠하냐? 이스라엘은 자기가 구하는 그것을 얻지 못하였으나 선택 받은 자는 얻었고 그 나머지는 이 날까지 눈멀게 되었으니 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
8 (이것은 기록된바, 하나님께서 그들에게 잠들게 하는 영과 보지 못할 눈과 듣지 못할 귀를 주셨도다, 함과 같으니라.) (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
9 또 다윗이 이르되, 그들의 밥상이 그들에게 올무와 함정과 걸림돌과 보응이 되게 하시고 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
10 그들의 눈이 어두워져서 그들이 보지 못하게 하시며 그들의 등이 항상 굽게 하소서, 하느니라. Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.
11 그러므로 내가 말하노니, 그들이 실족함으로 넘어지게 되었느냐? 결코 그럴 수 없느니라. 오히려 그들의 넘어짐을 통해 구원이 이방인들에게 이르렀으니 이것은 그들이 질투하게 하려 함이니라. I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
12 이제 그들의 넘어짐이 세상의 부요함이 되며 그들의 쇠퇴함이 이방인들의 부요함이 되거든 하물며 그들의 충만함은 얼마나 더 많이 부요함이 되겠느냐? Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?
13 내가 이방인들인 너희에게 말하노라. 내가 이방인들의 사도인 만큼 내 직무를 존귀히 여기나니 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
14 이것은 내가 어찌하든지 내 살붙이인 그들을 자극하여 경쟁하게 함으로 그들 중의 얼마를 구원하려 함이라. If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
15 그들을 버리는 것이 세상을 화해시키는 것이 되거든 그들을 받아들이는 것이 죽은 자들로부터 살아나는 것이 아니면 무엇이리요? For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
16 첫 열매가 거룩하면 덩어리도 거룩하고 뿌리가 거룩하면 가지들도 그러하니라. For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
17 또한 그 가지들 중에서 얼마가 꺾이고 야생 올리브나무인 네가 그들 가운데 접붙여져서 그들과 함께 올리브나무의 뿌리와 기름짐에 참여하게 되었을진대 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18 그 가지들을 향하여 자랑하지 말라. 자랑할지라도 네가 뿌리를 지탱하지 아니하며 뿌리가 너를 지탱하느니라. Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19 그러면 네가 말하기를, 그 가지들이 꺾인 것은 내가 접붙여지게 하려 함이라, 하리니 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
20 옳도다. 그들은 믿지 아니하므로 꺾였고 너는 믿음으로 말미암아 서 있느니라. 높은 마음을 품지 말고 도리어 두려워하라. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 하나님께서 본래의 가지들도 아끼지 아니하셨을진대 그분께서 또한 너를 아끼지 아니하실까 조심하라. For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 그러므로 하나님의 선하심과 엄하심을 보라. 넘어진 자들에게는 엄하심이 있으나 네가 그분의 선하심에 거하면 너를 향하여는 선하심이 있으리라. 그렇지 않으면 너도 잘려 나가리라. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
23 그들도 여전히 믿지 아니하는 데 머무르지 아니하면 접붙여지리니 하나님은 능히 그들을 다시 접붙이실 수 있느니라. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
24 네가 본래 야생 올리브나무에서 잘려 본성에 역행하며 좋은 올리브나무에 접붙여졌을진대 하물며 본래의 가지인 이들이야 얼마나 더 자기 자신의 올리브나무에 접붙여지겠느냐? For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
25 형제들아, 너희가 스스로 지혜로운 것으로 여기지 않게 하기 위하여 이 신비에 대해 너희가 모르기를 내가 원치 아니하노니 그것은 곧 이방인들의 충만함이 이를 때까지 일부가 눈머는 일이 이스라엘에게 생긴다는 것이라. For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 그리하여 온 이스라엘이 구원을 받으리라. 이것은 기록된바, 시온에서 구출자가 나와 야곱에게서 경건치 아니한 것을 돌이키리니 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 내가 그들의 죄들을 제거할 때에 이것이 그들을 향한 내 언약이니라, 함과 같으니라. For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 복음에 관하여는 그들이 너희로 인해 원수 된 자들이지만 선택에 대하여는 그들이 조상들로 인해 사랑받는 자들이니 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.
29 하나님의 선물들과 부르심에는 뜻을 돌이키는 일이 없느니라. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 너희가 지나간 때에는 하나님을 믿지 아니하였으나 이제는 그들이 믿지 아니함을 통해 긍휼을 얻었나니 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 이와 같이 이 사람들 또한 이제 믿지 아니한 것은 너희가 얻은 긍휼을 통하여 그들도 긍휼을 얻게 하려 함이라. Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 하나님께서 그들 모두를 믿지 아니하는 데 가두어 두신 것은 친히 모든 사람에게 긍휼을 베풀고자 하심이라. For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
33 오 깊도다, 하나님의 지혜와 지식의 부요함이여! 그분의 판단들은 헤아릴 수 없으며 그분의 길들은 찾지 못할 것이로다! O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 누가 주의 생각을 알았느냐? 누가 그분의 조언자가 되었느냐? For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
35 누가 그분께 먼저 드려서 다시 보답을 받겠느냐? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
36 모든 것이 그분에게서 나오고 그분으로 말미암으며 그분께로 돌아가나니 영광이 그분께 영원토록 있기를 원하노라. 아멘. For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
