1	아버지께서 우리에게 베푸신 사랑이 얼마나 큰지 생각해 보십시오. 하느님의 그 큰 사랑으로 우리는 하느님의 자녀라고 불리게 되었습니다. 우리는 과연 하느님의 자녀입니다. 세상 사람들이 우리를 알지 못하는 것은 그들이 하느님을 알지 못하기 때문입니다.	Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2	사랑하는 여러분, 이제 우리는 하느님의 자녀입니다. 우리가 장차 어떻게 될지는 분명하지 않지만 그리스도께서 나타나시면 우리도 그리스도와 같은 사람이 되리라는 것을 우리는 알고 있습니다. 그 때에는 우리가 그리스도의 참모습을 뵙겠기 때문입니다.	Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3	그리스도께 대하여 이런 희망을 가진 사람은 누구나 그리스도께서 순결하신 것처럼 자기 자신을 순결하게 합니다.	And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4	죄를 짓는 자는 누구나 하느님의 법을 어기는 자입니다. 법을 어기는 것이 곧 죄입니다.	Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5	여러분도 아시다시피 그리스도께서는 죄를 없애시려고 이 세상에 나타나셨던 것입니다. 그리스도는 죄가 없는 분이십니다.	And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6	언제나 그리스도와 함께 사는 사람은 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 언제나 죄를 짓는 사람은 그리스도를 보지도 못한 사람이고 알지도 못하는 사람입니다.	Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7	사랑하는 자녀들이여, 여러분은 아무에게도 속지 마십시오. 올바른 일을 하는 사람은 그리스도와 마찬가지로 올바른 사람입니다.	Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8	언제나 죄를 짓는 자는 악마에게 속해 있습니다. 사실 죄는 처음부터 악마의 짓입니다. 악마가 저질러놓은 일을 파멸시키려고 하느님의 아들이 나타나셨던 것입니다.	He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9	누구든지 하느님께로부터 난 사람은 자기 안에 하느님의 본성을 지녔으므로 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 그는 하느님께로부터 난 사람이기 때문에 도대체 죄를 지을 수가 없습니다.	Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10	옳은 일을 하지 않거나 자기 형제를 사랑하지 않는 자는 하느님께로부터 난 자가 아닙니다. 이와 같이 하느님의 자녀와 악마의 자식은 분명히 구별됩니다.	In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11	서로 사랑하라 여러분이 처음부터 들어온 계명의 말씀은 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다.	For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12	그리고 우리가 카인처럼 되어서는 안 된다는 것입니다. 카인은 악마의 자식으로서 자기 동생을 죽인 자입니다. 그가 동생을 죽인 이유는 무엇이었습니까? 동생이 한 일은 옳은 일이었는데 자기가 한 일은 악한 일이었기 때문입니다.	Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13	형제 여러분, 세상이 여러분을 미워하더라도 이상히 여길 것 없습니다.	Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14	우리는 우리의 형제들을 사랑하기 때문에 이미 죽음을 벗어나서 생명의 나라에 들어와 있는 것이 분명합니다. 사랑하지 않는 사람은 죽음 속에 그대로 머물러 있는 것입니다.	We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15	자기 형제를 미워하는 자는 누구나 다 살인자입니다. 여러분이 아시다시피 살인자는 결코 영원한 생명을 누릴 수 없습니다.	Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16	그리스도께서는 우리를 위해서 당신의 목숨을 내놓으셨습니다. 이것으로 우리가 사랑이 무엇인지를 알게 되었습니다. 그러므로 우리도 형제들을 위해서 우리의 목숨을 내놓아야 합니다.	Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17	누구든지 세상의 재물을 가지고 있으면서 자기의 형제가 궁핍한 것을 보고도 마음의 문을 닫고 그를 동정하지 않는다면 어떻게 그에게 하느님을 사랑하는 마음이 있다고 하겠습니까?	But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18	사랑하는 자녀들이여, 우리는 말로나 혀 끝으로 사랑하지 말고 행동으로 진실하게 사랑합시다.	My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19	하느님 앞에서의 확신 우리는 이렇게 사랑함으로써 우리가 진리에 속해 있다는 것을 알게 되고 또 하느님 앞에서 확신을 가질 수 있습니다.	And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20	우리가 양심의 가책을 받을 때에도 그렇습니다. 하느님께서 우리의 마음보다 크시고 또 모든 것을 알고 계시기 때문입니다.	For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21	사랑하는 여러분, 우리가 양심의 가책을 받지 않을 때에는 하느님 앞에서 떳떳합니다.	Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22	그리고 우리가 무엇을 구하든지 하느님께로부터 다 받을 수 있습니다. 우리가 하느님의 계명을 지키고 있으며 하느님께서 기뻐하실 만한 일들을 하고 있기 때문입니다.	And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23	우리가 명령받은 대로 하느님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고 서로 사랑하라는 것이 하느님의 계명입니다.	And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24	하느님의 계명을 지키는 사람은 하느님 안에서 살고 하느님께서도 그 사람 안에 계십니다. 하느님께서 우리 안에 계시다는 것은 우리에게 주신 성령을 보아서 알 수 있습니다.	And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
