1	우리를 변호해 주시는 그리스도 나는 믿음의 자녀인 여러분이 죄를 짓지 않게 하려고 여러분에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 그러나 혹 누가 죄를 짓더라도 아버지 앞에서 우리를 변호해 주시는 분이 계십니다. 그분은 의로우신 예수 그리스도이십니다.	My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2	그분은 우리의 죄를 용서해 주시려고 친히 제물이 되셨습니다. 우리의 죄뿐만 아니라 온 세상의 죄를 용서해 주시려고 제물이 되신 것입니다.	And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3	우리가 하느님의 계명을 지킬 때에 비로소 우리가 하느님을 알고 있다는 것이 확실해집니다.	And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4	하느님의 계명을 지키지 않으면서 하느님을 알고 있다고 말하는 자는 거짓말쟁이이고 진리를 저버리는 자입니다.	He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5	그러나 누구든지 하느님의 말씀을 지키면 그 사람은 진실로 하느님을 완전히 사랑하고 있는 것입니다. 이렇게 해서 우리는 우리가 하느님 안에 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.	But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6	자기가 하느님 안에서 산다고 말하는 사람은 그리스도께서 사신 것처럼 살아야 합니다.	He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7	새로운 계명 내가 사랑하는 여러분에게 써 보내는 것은 새로운 계명이 아니고 여러분이 처음부터 가지고 있던 옛 계명입니다. 그 옛 계명은 여러분이 줄곧 들어온 그 말씀입니다.	Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8	그러나 내가 여러분에게 써 보내는 것은 사실은 새 계명입니다. 어둠이 지나가고 참 빛이 이미 비치고 있기 때문입니다. 그 계명이 참되다는 것은 그리스도에게서 나타났고 또 그대들의 경험으로도 알 수 있습니다.	Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9	자기가 빛 속에서 산다고 말하면서 자기의 형제를 미워하는 자는 아직도 어둠 속에서 살고 있는 자입니다.	He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10	자기의 형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 속에서 살고 있는 사람이며 그는 남을 죄짓게 하는 일이 없습니다.	He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11	그러나 자기 형제를 미워하는 자는 어둠 속에 있으며 어둠 속에서 살아가기 때문에 그 눈이 어둠에 가려져서 자기가 어디로 가는지 알지 못합니다.	But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12	사랑하는 자녀들이여, 여러분의 죄가 그리스도를 통하여 용서를 받았기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.	I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
13	아버지 된 사람들이여, 천지 창조 이전부터 계신 그분을 여러분이 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 젊은이들이여, 여러분이 이미 악마를 이겼기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.	I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14	어린 자녀들이여, 여러분이 이미 아버지를 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 아버지 된 사람들이여, 천지 창조 이전부터 계신 그분을 여러분이 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 젊은이들이여, 여러분은 강하고, 하느님의 말씀을 지니고 살며 악마를 이겨냈기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.	I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
15	여러분은 세상이나 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 세상을 사랑하는 사람에게는 그 마음속에 아버지를 향한 사랑이 없습니다.	Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16	세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육체의 쾌락과 눈의 쾌락을 좇는 것이나 재산을 가지고 자랑하는 것은 아버지께로부터 나온 것이 아니고 세상에서 나온 것입니다.	For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17	세상도 가고 세상의 정욕도 다 지나가지만 하느님의 뜻대로 사는 사람은 영원히 살 것입니다.	And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18	그리스도의 적 어린 자녀들이여, 마지막 때가 왔습니다. 여러분은 그리스도의 적이 오리라는 말을 들어왔는데 벌써 그리스도의 적들이 많이 나타났습니다. 그러니 마지막 때가 왔다는 것이 분명합니다.	Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19	이런 자들은 본래 우리의 사람들이 아니었기 때문에 우리에게서 떨어져 나갔습니다. 만일 그들이 우리의 사람들이었다면 우리와 함께 그대로 남아 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 결국 그들은 우리에게서 떨어져 나갔고 그것으로 그들이 우리의 사람이 아니라는 것이 분명히 드러났습니다.	They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
20	그러나 여러분은 그 거룩하신 분에게서 성령을 받았습니다. 그러므로 여러분은 모두 참된 지식을 가지고 있습니다.	But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
21	내가 이렇게 여러분에게 편지를 써 보내는 것은 여러분이 진리를 몰라서가 아니라 진리를 알고 있기 때문이고 또 진리로부터 거짓말이 결코 나오지 않는다는 것도 알고 있기 때문입니다.	I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22	누가 거짓말쟁이입니까? 예수께서 그리스도시라는 것을 부인하는 사람이 아니겠습니까? 이런 사람이 곧 그리스도의 적이며 아버지와 아들을 부인하는 자입니다.	Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
23	누구든지 아들을 부인하는 사람은 아버지까지도 부인하며 그와 반대로 아들을 인정하는 사람은 아버지까지도 인정합니다.	Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
24	여러분이 처음부터 들어온 것을 마음속에 간직하십시오. 여러분이 처음부터 들어온 것이 여러분의 마음속에 살아 있으면 여러분은 아들과 아버지와 함께 살게 될 것입니다.	Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
25	이것이 바로 그리스도께서 친히 우리에게 약속해 주신 영원한 생명입니다.	And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
26	나는 여러분을 속이는 자들에 관해서 지금까지 썼습니다.	These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
27	그러나 여러분으로 말하자면 그리스도께서 부어주신 성령이 여러분의 마음속에 살아 계시는 한, 아무에게도 가르침을 받을 필요가 없습니다. 그리스도께서 부어주신 성령은 여러분에게 모든 것을 가르쳐주십니다. 그리고 그분은 진실하셔서 거짓말을 하지 않습니다. 여러분은 그 성령께서 가르쳐주신 대로 그리스도와 함께 살아가시오.	But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28	하느님의 자녀-악마의 자녀 그러므로 사랑하는 나의 자녀인 여러분은 그리스도와 함께 살아가시오. 그러면 그리스도께서 다시 오시는 날 우리가 자신을 갖게 되고 다시 오시는 그분에게 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 것입니다.	And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29	여러분은 그분이 의로운 분이시라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그리고 옳은 일을 하는 사람은 다 하느님께로부터 난 사람이라는 것을 알아야 합니다.	If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
