1	니고데모와의 대화 바리사이파 사람들 가운데 니고데모라는 사람이 있었다. 그는 유다인들의 지도자 중 한 사람이었는데	There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2	어느 날 밤에 예수를 찾아와서 "선생님, 우리는 선생님을 하느님께서 보내신 분으로 알고 있습니다. 하느님께서 함께 계시지 않고서야 누가 선생님처럼 그런 기적들을 행할 수 있겠습니까?" 하고 말하였다.	The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3	그러자 예수께서는 "정말 잘 들어두어라. 누구든지 새로 나지 아니하면 아무도 하느님의 나라를 볼 수 없다." 하고 말씀하셨다.	Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4	니고데모는 "다 자란 사람이 어떻게 다시 태어날 수 있겠습니까? 다시 어머니 뱃속에 들어갔다가 나올 수야 없지 않습니까?" 하고 물었다.	Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5	"정말 잘 들어두어라. 물과 성령으로 새로 나지 않으면 아무도 하느님 나라에 들어갈 수 없다.	Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6	육에서 나온 것은 육이며 영에서 나온 것은 영이다.	That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7	새로 나야 된다는 내 말을 이상하게 생각하지 마라.	Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8	바람은 제가 불고 싶은 대로 분다. 너는 그 소리를 듣고도 어디서 불어와서 어디로 가는지를 모른다. 성령으로 난 사람은 누구든지 이와 마찬가지다." 예수께서 이렇게 대답하시자	The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9	니고데모는 다시 "어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수가 있겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.	Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10	예수께서는 다시 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이스라엘의 이름난 선생이면서 이런 것들을 모르느냐?	Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11	정말 잘 들어두어라. 우리는 우리가 알고 있는 것을 말하고, 우리의 눈으로 본 것을 증언하는 것이다. 그런데도 너희는 우리의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다.	Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12	너희는 내가 이 세상 일을 말하는데도 믿지 않으면서 어떻게 하늘의 일을 두고 하는 말을 믿겠느냐?	If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13	하늘에서 내려온 사람의 아들 외에는 아무도 하늘에 올라간 일이 없다.	And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14	구리뱀이 광야에서 모세의 손에 높이 들렸던 것처럼 사람의 아들도 높이 들려야 한다.	And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15	그것은 그를 믿는 사람은 누구나 영원한 생명을 누리게 하려는 것이다.	That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16	하느님은 이 세상을 극진히 사랑하셔서 외아들을 보내주시어 그를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻게 하여주셨다.	For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17	하느님이 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은 세상을 단죄하시려는 것이 아니라 아들을 시켜 구원하시려는 것이다.	For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18	그를 믿는 사람은 죄인으로 판결받지 않으나 믿지 않는 사람은 이미 죄인으로 판결을 받았다. 하느님의 외아들을 믿지 않았기 때문이다.	He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19	빛이 세상에 왔지만 사람들은 자기들의 행실이 악하여 빛보다 어둠을 더 사랑했다. 이것이 벌써 죄인으로 판결받았다는 것을 말해 준다.	And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20	과연 악한 일을 일삼는 자는 누구나 자기 죄상이 드러날까봐 빛을 미워하고 멀리한다.	For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21	그러나 진리를 따라 사는 사람은 빛이 있는 데로 나아간다. 그리하여 그가 한 일은 모두 하느님의 뜻을 따라 한 일이라는 것이 드러나게 된다."	But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22	세례자 요한의 마지막 증언 그 뒤에 예수께서는 제자들과 함께 유다 지방으로 가셔서 그 곳에 머무르시면서 세례를 베푸셨다.	After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23	한편 살림에서 가까운 애논이라는 곳에 물이 많아서 요한은 거기에서 세례를 베풀었는데 많은 사람들이 찾아와 세례를 받았다.	And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
24	이것은 요한이 감옥에 갇히기 전의 일이었다.	For John was not yet cast into prison.
25	그런데 요한의 제자들과 어떤 유다인 사이에 정결 예식을 두고 논쟁이 벌어졌다.	Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26	그 제자들은 요한을 찾아가 "선생님, 선생님과 함께 요르단 강 건너편에 계시던 분이 세례를 베풀고 있습니다. 선생님께서 증언하신 바로 그분인데 모든 사람이 그분에게 몰려가고 있습니다." 하고 말하였다.	And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27	요한은 제자들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "사람은 하늘이 주시지 않으면 아무것도 받을 수 없다.	John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
28	나는 그리스도가 아니라 그분 앞에 사명을 띠고 온 사람이라고 말하였는데 너희는 그것을 직접 들은 증인들이다.	Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29	신부를 맞을 사람은 신랑이다. 신랑의 친구도 옆에 서 있다가 신랑의 목소리가 들리면 기쁨에 넘친다. 내 마음도 이런 기쁨으로 가득 차 있다.	He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30	그분은 더욱 커지셔야 하고 나는 작아져야 한다."	He must increase, but I must decrease.
31	하늘에서 오시는 분 위에서 오신 분은 모든 사람 위에 계신다. 세상에서 나온 사람은 세상에 속하여 세상 일을 말하고 하늘에서 오신 분은 모든 사람 위에 계시며	He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32	친히 보고 들으신 것을 증언하신다. 그러나 아무도 그분의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다.	And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33	그분의 증언을 받아들이는 사람은 하느님께서 참되시다는 것을 확증하는 사람이다.	He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34	하느님께서 보내신 분이 하시는 말씀은 곧 하느님의 말씀이다. 하느님께서는 그분에게 성령을 아낌없이 주시기 때문이다.	For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35	아버지께서는 아들을 사랑하셔서 모든 것을 그의 손에 맡기셨다.	The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36	그러므로 아들을 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻을 것이며 아들을 믿지 않는 사람은 생명을 얻기는커녕 오히려 하느님의 영원한 분노를 사게 될 것이다.	He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
