절	공동번역 개정판 (1999)	King James Version
1	제자들의 발을 씻어주신 예수 과월절을 하루 앞두고 예수께서는 이제 이 세상을 떠나 아버지께로 가실 때가 된 것을 아시고 이 세상에서 사랑하시던 제자들을 더욱 극진히 사랑해 주셨다.	Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2	예수께서 제자들과 같이 저녁을 잡수실 때 악마는 이미 가리옷 사람 시몬의 아들 유다의 마음속에 예수를 팔아넘길 생각을 불어넣었다.	And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
3	한편 예수께서는 아버지께서 모든 것을 당신의 손에 맡겨주신 것과 당신이 하느님께로부터 왔다가 다시 하느님께 돌아가게 되었다는 것을 아시고	Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4	식탁에서 일어나 겉옷을 벗고 수건을 허리에 두르신 뒤	He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5	대야에 물을 떠서 제자들의 발을 차례로 씻고 허리에 두르셨던 수건으로 닦아주셨다.	After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6	시몬 베드로의 차례가 되자 그는 "주께서 제 발을 씻으시렵니까?" 하고 말하였다.	Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7	예수께서는 "너는 내가 왜 이렇게 하는지 지금은 모르지만 나중에는 알게 될 것이다." 하고 대답하셨다.	Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8	베드로가 "안 됩니다. 제 발만은 결코 씻지 못하십니다." 하고 사양하자 예수께서는 "내가 너를 씻어주지 않으면 너는 이제 나와 아무 상관도 없게 된다." 하셨다.	Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9	그러자 시몬 베드로는 "주님, 그러면 발뿐 아니라 손과 머리까지도 씻어주십시오." 하고 간청하였다.	Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10	예수께서는 "목욕을 한 사람은 온몸이 깨끗하니 발만 씻으면 그만이다. 너희도 그처럼 깨끗하다. 그러나 모두가 다 깨끗한 것은 아니다." 하고 말씀하셨다.	Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11	예수께서는 이미 당신을 팔아넘길 사람이 누군지 알고 계셨으므로 모두가 깨끗한 것은 아니라고 하신 것이다.	For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12	예수께서는 제자들의 발을 씻고 나서 겉옷을 입고 다시 식탁에 돌아와 앉으신 다음 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "내가 왜 지금 너희의 발을 씻어주었는지 알겠느냐?	So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13	너희는 나를 스승 또는 주라고 부른다. 그것은 사실이니 그렇게 부르는 것이 옳다.	Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14	그런데 스승이며 주인 내가 너희의 발을 씻어주었으니 너희도 서로 발을 씻어주어야 한다.	If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15	내가 너희에게 한 일을 너희도 그대로 하라고 본을 보여준 것이다.	For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16	정말 잘 들어두어라. 종이 주인보다 더 나을 수 없고 파견된 사람이 파견한 사람보다 더 나을 수는 없다.	Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17	이제 너희는 이것을 알았으니 그대로 실천하면 복을 받을 것이다.	If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18	이것은 너희 모두를 두고 하는 말은 아니다. 나는 내가 뽑은 사람들을 알고 있다. 그러나 '나와 함께 빵을 먹는 자가 나를 배반하였다.' 한 성경 말씀은 이루어질 것이다.	I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
19	내가 미리 이 일을 일러주는 것은 그 일이 일어날 때 너희로 하여금 내가 누구라는 것을 믿게 하려는 것이다.	Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
20	정말 잘 들어두어라. 내가 보내는 사람을 받아들이는 사람은 나를 받아들이고 또 나를 받아들이는 사람은 나를 보내신 분을 받아들인다." (; ; )	Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
21	유다의 배반을 예고하시다 예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 나서 몹시 번민하시며 "정말 잘 들어두어라. 너희 가운데 나를 팔아넘길 사람이 하나 있다." 하고 내놓고 말씀하셨다.	When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22	제자들은 누구를 가리켜서 하시는 말씀인지를 몰라 서로 쳐다보았다.	Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
23	그 때 제자 한 사람이 바로 예수 곁에 앉아 있었는데 그는 예수의 사랑을 받던 제자였다.	Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24	그래서 시몬 베드로가 그에게 눈짓을 하며 누구를 두고 하시는 말씀인지 여쭈어보라고 하였다.	Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
25	그 제자가 예수께 바싹 다가앉으며 "주님, 그게 누굽니까?" 하고 묻자	He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26	예수께서는 "내가 빵을 적셔서 줄 사람이 바로 그 사람이다." 하셨다. 그리고는 빵을 적셔서 가리옷 사람 시몬의 아들 유다에게 주셨다.	Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27	유다가 그 빵을 받아 먹자마자 사탄이 그에게 들어갔다. 그 때 예수께서는 유다에게 "네가 할 일을 어서 하여라." 하고 이르셨다.	And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
28	그러나 그 자리에 앉아 있던 사람들은 예수께서 왜 그에게 이런 말씀을 하셨는지 아무도 몰랐다.	Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29	유다가 돈주머니를 맡아보고 있었기 때문에 더러는 예수께서 유다에게 명절에 쓸 물건을 사오라고 하셨거나 가난한 사람들에게 무엇을 주라고 하신 줄로만 알았다.	For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
30	유다는 빵을 받은 뒤에 곧 밖으로 나갔다. 때는 밤이었다.	He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
31	새 계명 유다가 나간 뒤에 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "이제 사람의 아들이 영광을 받게 되었고 또 사람의 아들로 말미암아 하느님께서도 영광을 받으시게 되었다.	Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32	하느님께서 사람의 아들로 말미암아 영광을 받으신다면 하느님께서도 몸소 사람의 아들에게 영광을 주실 것이다. 아니, 이제 곧 주실 것이다.	If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33	나의 사랑하는 제자들아, 내가 너희와 같이 있는 것도 이제 잠시뿐이다. 내가 가면 너희는 나를 찾아다닐 것이다. 일찍이 유다인들에게 말한 대로 이제 너희에게도 말하거니와 내가 가는 곳에 너희는 올 수 없다.	Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34	나는 너희에게 새 계명을 주겠다. 서로 사랑하여라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것처럼 너희도 서로 사랑하여라.	A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35	너희가 서로 사랑하면 세상 사람들이 그것을 보고 너희가 내 제자라는 것을 알게 될 것이다." (; ; )	By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36	베드로의 장담 그 때 시몬 베드로가 "주님, 어디로 가시겠습니까?" 하고 물었다. 예수께서는 "지금은 내가 가는 곳으로 따라올 수 없다. 그러나 나중에는 따라오게 될 것이다." 하고 대답하셨다.	Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
37	"주님, 어찌하여 지금은 따라갈 수 없습니까? 주님을 위해서라면 목숨이라도 바치겠습니다." 베드로가 이렇게 장담하자	Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38	예수께서는 "나를 위해서 목숨을 바치겠다고? 정말 잘 들어두어라. 새벽 닭이 울기 전에 너는 나를 세 번이나 모른다고 할 것이다." 하셨다.	Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
