1	속아서 맺은 기브온과의 우호조약 이 소식을 듣고 요르단 강 건너편 산악 지대와 야산 지대와 대해 연안을 끼고 레바논에 이르는 지역에 사는 헷족, 아모리족, 가나안족, 브리즈족, 히위족, 여부스족의 왕들은 모두	And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
2	동맹을 맺어 여호수아가 거느린 이스라엘과 싸우기로 의견을 모았다.	That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
3	그런데 기브온 주민들은 여호수아가 예리고와 아이를 해치운 이야기를 듣고,	And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
4	가만히 있을 수 없어 속임수를 쓰기로 하였다. 그들은 너덜너덜한 부대와 터져서 기운 헌 가죽 술부대를 나귀에 싣고 떠날 채비를 차렸다.	They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
5	또 발에는 닳아빠져 기운 신을 신고 낡은 옷을 입고 또 말라서 바삭바삭하는 빵을 가지고 떠났다.	And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
6	그들은 길갈에 있는 이스라엘 진지로 여호수아를 찾아가 그와 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하였다. "우리는 먼 나라에서 왔습니다. 이제 우리와 조약을 맺어주십시오."	And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
7	이스라엘 사람들이 그 히위 사람들에게 "당신들은 이 근방에 사는 것 같은데, 우리가 어떻게 당신들과 조약을 맺을 수 있겠소?" 하고 대답하자,	And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
8	그들은 여호수아에게 이렇게 말하는 것이었다. "우리는 당신의 종입니다." 그러나 여호수아가 "그대들은 누군가? 어디에서 왔는가?" 하고 묻자,	And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
9	그들은 이렇게 대답하였다. "소인들은 당신의 하느님 야훼의 명성을 듣고 아주 먼 나라에서 왔습니다. 우리는 그의 이야기를 들었습니다. 그가 이집트에서 하신 모든 일과	And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
10	요르단 강 건너 지역의 두 아모리 왕 곧 헤스본 왕 시혼과 아스다롯에 사는 바산 왕 옥을 해치우신 이야기를 모두 들었습니다.	And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
11	우리 나라의 장로들과 온 백성이 도중에 먹을 양식을 마련해 주면서 당신들을 만나라고 우리를 보냈습니다. 그래서 이렇게, 우리는 당신들의 종이니 우리와 조약을 맺어달라고 청하는 것입니다.	Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
12	여기에 우리의 빵이 있습니다. 당신들께 오려고 집에서 만들어가지고 떠날 때는 따끈따끈하던 것입니다. 그런데 보시다시피 이제는 이렇게 말라서 바삭바삭해졌습니다.	This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
13	이 부대도 술을 채울 때는 새것이었는데 보시다시피 이렇게 터졌고 우리 옷과 신발도 먼 길을 오다 보니 이렇게 해어졌습니다."	And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
14	이스라엘 회중의 대표들은 야훼의 허락을 얻지도 않고 그들에게서 양식을 받았다.	And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.
15	그리고 여호수아는 그들과 우호 관계를 맺기로 하고 그들의 목숨을 보장한다는 조약을 체결해 주었으며 회중의 지도자들은 그들에게 맹세하였다.	And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
16	그런데 그들에게 조약을 체결해 준 지 사흘밖에 되지 않아 그들이 인근 백성으로서 이스라엘 사이에 끼여 살고 있다는 소문이 들렸다.	And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
17	이스라엘 백성은 다시 진을 거두어 길을 떠난 지 사흘째 되는 날 그들의 성읍인 기브온, 그비라, 브에롯, 키럇여아림에 이르렀다.	And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath–jearim.
18	그러나 회중의 대표들이 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼를 두고 맹세했기 때문에 그들을 칠 수가 없었다. 그래서 온 회중이 대표들을 원망하게 되자,	And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
19	모든 대표들이 온 회중에게 말하였다. "바로 우리가 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼를 두고 맹세해 놓고 이제 와서 어떻게 손을 댈 수 있겠느냐?	But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
20	우리는 그들을 살려둘 수밖에 다른 길이 없다. 그래야 우리가 그들에게 해준 맹세 때문에 입는 화를 면하게 될 것이다."	This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.
21	대표들은 말을 계속하였다. "그들을 일단 살려두고 우리 회중을 섬기게 하자. 그들로 하여금 나무를 패고 물을 긷게 하자." 온 회중은 대표들의 의견을 따르기로 하였다.	And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
22	그리하여 여호수아는 기브온 사람들을 불러다가 말하였다. "어쩌자고 너희는 이렇게 우리 가운데 끼여 살면서 아주 먼 데 산다고 우리를 속였느냐?	And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
23	그러니 너희는 이제 저주를 받아 대대로 우리 하느님의 집에서 나무를 패고 물을 길으며 종살이를 해야 한다."	Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.
24	그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "이 땅 주민을 모두 당신들 앞에서 멸하고 이 땅을 모두 당신들에게 주라고 당신의 하느님 야훼께서 종인 모세에게 명령하셨다는 것을 소인들은 분명히 들었습니다. 우리는 당신들에게 목숨을 빼앗길까 겁에 질렸었습니다. 그래서 이런 일을 했습니다.	And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
25	우리는 이미 이렇게 당신 수중에 있습니다. 소견대로 하십시오. 어떤 처분이든지 달게 받겠습니다."	And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.
26	여호수아는 그들에게 다음과 같은 처분을 내렸다. 즉 이스라엘 사람들의 손에 맞아죽지 않고 살게 하는 대신,	And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.
27	그 날로부터 나무를 패고 물을 길어 회중을 섬기게 하였다. 그리하여 오늘까지 그들은 야훼께서 택하신 곳에서 야훼의 제단 일을 거들게 된 것이다.	And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
