1	브올에서 생긴 일 이스라엘이 시띰에 머물러 있을 때에 백성들이 모압 여인들과 놀아나는 음탕한 사건이 생겼다.	And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2	여인들은 자기들의 신에게 드리는 제사에 그들을 초청하였고 이스라엘 백성은 그 초청을 받아 함께 먹으며 그들의 신을 예배하였다.	And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3	이처럼 이스라엘이 브올 지방의 바알 신과 어울리게 되자 야훼께서 이스라엘에 진노를 내리셨다.	And Israel joined himself unto Baal–peor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
4	야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "백성의 수령들을 모두 잡아내어 야훼 앞에서 죽이고 백일하에 효시하여라. 그래야 야훼의 진노가 이스라엘에서 떠나리라."	And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
5	모세는 브올 지방의 바알 신과 어울린 자를 모두 찾아내어 죽이라고 이스라엘의 판관들에게 명령하였다.	And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal–peor.
6	이스라엘 백성이 만남의 장막 문 어귀에서 통곡하고 있을 때, 이스라엘 사람 하나가 모세와 온 회중이 보는 앞에서 미디안 여인을 데려다가 일가 사람들에게 인사를 시켰다.	And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7	아론의 손자이자 엘르아잘의 아들인 비느하스 사제가 이것을 보고 회중 가운데서 일어나 창을 집어 들고	And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8	그 이스라엘 사람을 뒤쫓아 그의 방으로 들어가 그 이스라엘 사람과 여인의 배를 찔러 죽였다. 그제야 이스라엘 백성을 덮쳤던 염병이 물러갔다.	And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9	그 재앙으로 죽은 사람은 이만 사천 명이나 되었다.	And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10	야훼께서 모세에게 이르셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
11	"아론의 손자요 엘르아잘의 아들인 비느하스 사제를 보아서 나는 이스라엘 백성에게서 진노를 거두었다. 너희 가운데에서 나의 질투를 같이 느낀 사람은 그밖에 없었다. 내키는 대로 했다면 이스라엘 백성을 다 없애버렸을 것이다.	Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12	그러므로 나는 이제 그를 잘되게 해주리라고 언약한다.	Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13	나는 그와 그의 후손에게 언제까지나 사제직을 맡긴다. 그가 자기의 하느님께 정성을 바쳐 이스라엘 백성의 죄를 벗겨주었기 때문이다."	And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14	미디안 여인과 함께 죽은 이스라엘 사람은 살루의 아들로서 시므온 지파에 속한 한 가문의 대표인 지므리였다.	Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15	처형된 미디안 여인은 미디안에 있는 한 가문의 추장인 수르의 딸인 고즈비였다.	And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
16	야훼께서 모세에게 이르셨다.	And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
17	"미디안에 쳐들어가 그들을 죽여라.	Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18	그들은 브올에서의 일로 염병이 내렸을 때 죽은 미디안 추장의 딸 고즈비의 일로 너희를 꾀어 고생시킨 자들이다."	For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
19	두 번째 인구조사 염병이 물러간 다음	—
