| 1 | 長老は選を蒙りたる夫人及び其子等、即ち我並に、啻我のみならず、総て眞理を識れる人も亦、 | The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; |
| 2 | 今我等の中に止りて、而も限なく我等と共に存すべき眞理に對して、眞に愛する所の者に[書簡を贈る]。 | For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. |
| 3 | 願はくは恩寵と慈悲と平安とが、父にて在す神及び父の御子イエズス、キリストより賜はりて、眞理及び愛に於て汝等と共に在らん事を。 | Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. |
| 4 | 我汝の子等の中に、我等が父より掟を受け奉りし如くに歩める者あるを認めて、甚だ喜べり。 | I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. |
| 5 | 夫人よ、今新しき掟を書贈るものとせず、之を初より受けたるものとして相愛せん事を汝に冀ふ。 | And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. |
| 6 | 愛とは我等が其御掟に從ひて歩むべき事是なり。御掟とは即汝等が初より聞きたるがままに歩むべきもの是なり。 | And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. |
| 7 | 蓋肉體にて來り給ふイエズス、キリストを宣言せざる、多くの誘惑者世に出でたり、是ぞ誘惑者にして又非キリストなる。 | For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. |
| 8 | 汝等己に省みて、我等が曾て働きし所を失はず、充満せる報酬を受くる様にせよ。 | Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. |
| 9 | 総てキリストの教に止らずして退く者は神を有し奉らず、教に止る者は父及び御子を有し奉る。 | Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. |
| 10 | 若汝等に至る者にして、此教を齎す事なくば、之を家に入るる事なく、之に挨拶すること勿れ。 | If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: |
| 11 | 其は之に挨拶する人は、其惡しき業に與ればなり。 | For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. |
| 12 | 書贈るべき事尚多くあれども、我は紙と墨とを以てするを好まず、是汝等の喜の全からん為に、汝等の中に在りて口づから語らん事を希望すればなり。 | Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. |
| 13 | 選を蒙りたる汝の姉妹の子等、汝に宜しくと言へり。 | The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen. |
