1 斯てイエズス十二の弟子に命じ畢り給ひて、彼等の町々に教へ且説教せんとて、其處を去り給ひしが、 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 ヨハネは監獄に在りてキリストの業を聞きしかば、其弟子の二人を遣はして、 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 彼に云はしめけるは、來るべき者は汝なるか、或は我等の待てる者尚他に在るか、と。 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 イエズス彼等に答へて曰ひけるは、往きて汝等の聞き且見し所をヨハネに告げよ、 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 瞽者は見え、跛者は歩み、癩病者は潔くなり、聾者は聞え、死者は蘇り、貧者は福音を聞かせらる、 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 斯て我に就きて躓かざる人は福なり、と。 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 彼等の去るや、イエズスヨハネの事を群衆に語り出で給ひけるは、汝等何を見んとて荒野に出しぞ、風に動かさるる葦か。 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 然らば何を見んとて出しぞ、柔き物を着たる人か、看よ、柔き物を着たる人々は帝王の家に在り。 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
9 然らば何を見んとて出しぞ、預言者か、我汝等に告ぐ、然り、預言者よりも優れる者なり。 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 録して「看よ、我使を汝の面前に遣はさん、彼汝に先ちて汝の道を備ふべし」とあるは、彼が事なり。 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 我誠に汝等に告ぐ、婦より生れたる者の中に、洗者ヨハネより大なる者は未曾て起らず、然れど天國にて最小き人も、彼よりは大なり。 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 洗者ヨハネの日より今に至りて、天國は暴力に襲はれ、暴力の者之を奪ふ、 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 其は諸の預言者と律法との預言したるは、ヨハネに至る迄なればなり。 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 汝等若暁らんと欲せば、彼は來るべきエリアなり。 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 聴く耳を持てる人は聴け。 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 現代を誰に比へんか、恰も衢に坐せる童が友等に叫びて、 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 我等汝等の為に笛吹きたれども汝等踊らず、我等嘆きたれども汝等悲しまざりき、と云ふに似たり。 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 蓋ヨハネ來りて飲食せざれば、惡魔に憑かれたりと云はれ、 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 人の子來りて飲食すれば、看よ彼は食を貪り酒を飲む人にて、税吏及罪人の友なり、と云はる。然りながら智恵は其子等に義しとせられたり、と。 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 然てイエズス、奇蹟の多く行はれたる町々の改心せざるによりて、之を責め始め給ひけるは、 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 禍なる哉汝コロザイン、禍なる哉汝ベッサイダ。蓋汝等の中に行はれし奇蹟、若チロとシドンとの中に行はれしならば、彼等は夙に改心して、荒き毛衣を纏ひ灰を蒙りしならん。 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 然れば我汝等に告ぐ、審判の日に於て、チロとシドンとは汝等よりも忍び易からん。 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 カファルナウムよ、汝も何ぞ天にまで上げられんや、當に地獄にまでも陥るべし。蓋汝の中に行はれし奇蹟、若ソドマに行はれしならば、彼は必ず今日まで猶遺りしならん。 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 然れば我汝等に告ぐ、審判の日に於て、ソドマの地は汝よりも忍び易からん、と。 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 其時イエズス復曰ひけるは、天地の主なる父よ、我汝を稱賛す、其は是等の事を學者智者に隠して、小き人々に顕し給ひたればなり。 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 然り父よ、斯の如きは御意に適ひし故なり。 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 一切の物は我父より我に賜はれり、父の外に子を知る者なく、子及子より肯て示されたらん者の外に、父を知る者なし。 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 我に來れ、総て勞苦して重荷を負へる者よ、我は汝等を回復せしめん。 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 我は柔和にして心謙遜なるが故に、汝等自我軛を取りて我に學べ、然らば汝等の魂に安息を得べし。 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 其は我が[負はする]軛は快く、荷は軽ければなり。 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
