1 然て我は言はん、世嗣は家督の主なりと雖も、小兒の間は奴隷と異なる事なく、 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2 父の定めたる時までは、後見人及び治産者の下に在り。 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3 斯の如く、我等も小兒の中は世の小學の下に事へつつありき。 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4 然れど満期の時至りて、神は御子を女より生りたるもの、律法の下に生りたるものとして遣はし給へり。 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 是律法の下に在りし人々を贖ひ、我等をして子とせらるることを得しめ給はん為なり。 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 斯て汝等が子たるによりて、神は、アバ、父よ、と叫び給へる御子の霊を、汝等の心に遣はし給へり。 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 然れば最早奴隷に非ずして子たるなり、子たる上は又神によりて世嗣たるなり。 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8 彼時には汝等神を知らず、生來神たらざるものに事へて奴隷たりき。 Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
9 然れど今は既に神を識り、而も亦神に識られたるに、如何ぞ再び弱く乏しき小學に返りて、更に之に事へんとはする。 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10 汝等は日と月と季節と年とを守る。 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11 我汝等の為に氣遣ひ、或は汝等の中に働きし事の無益とならんことを恐る。 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
12 兄弟等よ、我も汝等の如くに成れば、希はくは汝等我が如くに成れ。汝等は曾て我を害せし事なし、 Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
13 却て知れる如く、我が初め福音を汝等に述べし時、身體の虚弱を以てし、其身體汝等の試となれるを、 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14 卑しむ事なく嫌ふ事もなくして、我を神の使の如く、キリスト、イエズスの如くにさへ承けたりき。 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15 汝等の主張せし福何處にかある、我汝等の為に證明す、為し得べくんば汝等己が目をも抉りて我に與へしならん。 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
16 然れば我汝等に眞を語りて汝等の敵となりたるか、 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
17 彼人々は汝等の為に盡力すれども、是好意に非ず、己が為に盡力せしめんとて、汝等をして離れしめんと欲せるなり。 They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
18 絶えず善事に就きて盡力せらるるは宜きことながら、我が汝等の中に在る時のみにては足らざるなり。 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
19 我が小子よ、汝等の中にキリストの形造られ給ふ迄は、我汝等の為に陣痛に遇へり。 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
20 望むらくは汝等の中に在りて聲音を變へん事を、其は汝等に就きて當惑すればなり。 I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
21 律法の下に在らんと欲する者よ、我に語れ、汝等律法を聞きし事なきか、 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
22 蓋録して、アブラハムに二人の子ありしに、一人は奴隷の婦よりし、一人は自由の身なる婦よりせり、とあり。 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23 奴隷の婦の子は肉に從ひて生れしに、自由の身なる婦の子は約束によりて生れたり。 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24 是等の事の言はれしは前表にして、彼婦は兩約を斥す、一はシナイ山よりして子を奴隷に生む、之即ちアガルなり。 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25 蓋シナイ山はアラビアに在りて、今のエルザレムに當り、其子等と共に奴隷なり。 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26 然れど上なるエルザレムは自由の身にして、之ぞ我等の母なる。 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27 蓋録して、「石女にして生まざる者よ、喜べ、産せざる者よ、聲を揚げて呼はれ、其は獨り殘されたる婦は、夫ある者よりも子多ければなり」、とあり。 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28 兄弟等よ、我等はイザアクの如く約束の子なり、 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29 然て彼時肉によりて生れたりし者が、霊によれる者を迫害したりし如く、今も尚然るなり。 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30 然れど聖書は何とか言へる、「奴隷の婦と其子とを遂払へ、其は奴隷の婦の子は自由の身なる婦の子と共に世嗣たるべからざればなり」、とあり。 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31 然れば兄弟等よ、我等は奴隷の婦の子に非ず、自由の身なる婦の子なり、キリストの我等を贖ひ給へるは自由の為なり。 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
