1 全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
8 こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
10 セムの系図は次のとおりである。セムは百歳になって洪水の二年の後にアルパクサデを生んだ。 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:
11 セムはアルパクサデを生んで後、五百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
12 アルパクサデは三十五歳になってシラを生んだ。 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:
13 アルパクサデはシラを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
14 シラは三十歳になってエベルを生んだ。 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:
15 シラはエベルを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
16 エベルは三十四歳になってペレグを生んだ。 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:
17 エベルはペレグを生んで後、四百三十年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
18 ペレグは三十歳になってリウを生んだ。 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
19 ペレグはリウを生んで後、二百九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
20 リウは三十二歳になってセルグを生んだ。 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:
21 リウはセルグを生んで後、二百七年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
22 セルグは三十歳になってナホルを生んだ。 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:
23 セルグはナホルを生んで後、二百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
24 ナホルは二十九歳になってテラを生んだ。 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:
25 ナホルはテラを生んで後、百十九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
26 テラは七十歳になってアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生んだ。 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 テラの系図は次のとおりである。テラはアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生み、ハランはロトを生んだ。 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
28 ハランは父テラにさきだって、その生れた地、カルデヤのウルで死んだ。 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 アブラムとナホルは妻をめとった。アブラムの妻の名はサライといい、ナホルの妻の名はミルカといってハランの娘である。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父である。 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
30 サライはうまずめで、子がなかった。 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 テラはその子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとカルデヤのウルを出たが、ハランに着いてそこに住んだ。 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
32 テラの年は二百五歳であった。テラはハランで死んだ。 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
