1 見よ、わたしの目は、これをことごとく見た。わたしの耳はこれを聞いて悟った。 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.
2 あなたがたの知っている事は、わたしも知っている。わたしはあなたがたに劣らない。 What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.
3 しかしわたしは全能者に物を言おう、わたしは神と論ずることを望む。 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
4 あなたがたは偽りをもってうわべを繕う者、皆、無用の医師だ。 But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
5 どうか、あなたがたは全く沈黙するように。これがあなたがたの知恵であろう。 O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
6 今、わたしの論ずることを聞くがよい。わたしの口で言い争うことに耳を傾けるがよい。 Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.
7 あなたがたは神のために不義を言おうとするのか。また彼のために偽りを述べるのか。 Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?
8 あなたがたは彼にひいきしようとするのか。神のために争おうとするのか。 Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?
9 神があなたがたを調べられるとき、あなたがたは無事だろうか。あなたがたは人を欺くように彼を欺くことができるか。 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?
10 あなたがたがもし、ひそかにひいきするならば、彼は必ずあなたがたを責められる。 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.
11 その威厳はあなたがたを恐れさせないであろうか。彼をおそれる恐れがあなたがたに臨まないであろうか。 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?
12 あなたがたの格言は灰のことわざだ。あなたがたの盾は土の盾だ。 Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
13 黙して、わたしにかかわるな、わたしは話そう。何事でもわたしに来るなら、来るがよい。 Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
14 わたしはわが肉をわが歯に取り、わが命をわが手のうちに置く。 Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
15 見よ、彼はわたしを殺すであろう。わたしは絶望だ。しかしなおわたしはわたしの道を彼の前に守り抜こう。 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
16 これこそわたしの救となる。神を信じない者は、神の前に出ることができないからだ。 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.
17 あなたがたはよくわたしの言葉を聞き、わたしの述べる所を耳に入れよ。 Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.
18 見よ、わたしはすでにわたしの立ち場を言い並べた。わたしは義とされることをみずから知っている。 Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.
19 だれかわたしと言い争う事のできる者があろうか。もしあるならば、わたしは黙して死ぬであろう。 Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.
20 ただわたしに二つの事を許してください。そうすれば、わたしはあなたの顔をさけて隠れることはないでしょう。 Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.
21 あなたの手をわたしから離してください。あなたの恐るべき事をもってわたしを恐れさせないでください。 Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.
22 そしてお呼びください、わたしは答えます。わたしに物を言わせて、あなたご自身、わたしにお答えください。 Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.
23 わたしのよこしまと、わたしの罪がどれほどあるか。わたしのとがと罪とをわたしに知らせてください。 How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.
24 なにゆえ、あなたはみ顔をかくし、わたしをあなたの敵とされるのか。 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?
25 あなたは吹き回される木の葉をおどし、干あがったもみがらを追われるのか。 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?
26 あなたはわたしについて苦き事どもを書きしるし、わたしに若い時の罪を継がせ、 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.
27 わたしの足を足かせにはめ、わたしのすべての道をうかがい、わたしの足の周囲に限りをつけられる。 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.
28 このような人は腐れた物のように朽ち果て、虫に食われた衣服のようにすたれる。 And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.
