| 1 | そこでヨブは答えて言った、 | And Job answered and said, |
| 2 | 「まことに、あなたがたのみ、人である、知恵はあなたがたと共に死ぬであろう。 | No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you. |
| 3 | しかしわたしも、あなたがたと同様に悟りをもつ。わたしはあなたがたに劣らない。だれがこのような事を知らないだろうか。 | But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these? |
| 4 | わたしは神に呼ばわって、聞かれた者であるのに、その友の物笑いとなっている。正しく全き人は物笑いとなる。 | I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn. |
| 5 | 安らかな者の思いには、不幸な者に対する侮りがあって、足のすべる者を待っている。 | He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease. |
| 6 | かすめ奪う者の天幕は栄え、神を怒らす者は安らかである。自分の手に神を携えている者も同様だ。 | The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly. |
| 7 | しかし獣に問うてみよ、それはあなたに教える。空の鳥に問うてみよ、それはあなたに告げる。 | But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: |
| 8 | あるいは地の草や木に問うてみよ、彼らはあなたに教える。海の魚もまたあなたに示す。 | Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. |
| 9 | これらすべてのもののうち、いずれか主の手がこれをなしたことを知らぬ者があろうか。 | Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this? |
| 10 | すべての生き物の命、およびすべての人の息は彼の手のうちにある。 | In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. |
| 11 | 口が食物を味わうように、耳は言葉をわきまえないであろうか。 | Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat? |
| 12 | 老いた者には知恵があり、命の長い者には悟りがある。 | With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. |
| 13 | 知恵と力は神と共にあり、深慮と悟りも彼のものである。 | With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding. |
| 14 | 彼が破壊すれば、再び建てることができない。彼が人を閉じ込めれば、開き出すことができない。 | Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening. |
| 15 | 彼が水を止めれば、それはかれ、彼が水を出せば、地をくつがえす。 | Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. |
| 16 | 力と深き知恵は彼と共にあり、惑わされる者も惑わす者も彼のものである。 | With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his. |
| 17 | 彼は議士たちを裸にして連れ行き、さばきびとらを愚かにし、 | He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools. |
| 18 | 王たちのきずなを解き、彼らの腰に腰帯を巻き、 | He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle. |
| 19 | 祭司たちを裸にして連れ行き、力ある者を滅ぼし、 | He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. |
| 20 | みずから頼む者たちの言葉を奪い、長老たちの分別を取り去り、 | He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged. |
| 21 | 君たちの上に侮りを注ぎ、強い者たちの帯を解き、 | He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty. |
| 22 | 暗やみの中から隠れた事どもをあらわし、暗黒を光に引き出し、 | He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. |
| 23 | 国々を大きくし、またこれを滅ぼし、国々を広くし、また捕え行き、 | He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again. |
| 24 | 地の民の長たちの悟りを奪い、彼らを道なき荒野にさまよわせ、 | He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. |
| 25 | 光なき暗やみに手探りさせ、酔うた者のようによろめかせる。 | They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man. |
