1 わたしはキリストにあって真実を語る。偽りは言わない。わたしの良心も聖霊によって、わたしにこうあかしをしている。 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2 すなわち、わたしに大きな悲しみがあり、わたしの心に絶えざる痛みがある。 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3 実際、わたしの兄弟、肉による同族のためなら、わたしのこの身がのろわれて、キリストから離されてもいとわない。 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4 彼らはイスラエル人であって、子たる身分を授けられることも、栄光も、もろもろの契約も、律法を授けられることも、礼拝も、数々の約束も彼らのもの、 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5 また父祖たちも彼らのものであり、肉によればキリストもまた彼らから出られたのである。万物の上にいます神は、永遠にほむべきかな、アァメン。 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6 しかし、神の言が無効になったというわけではない。なぜなら、イスラエルから出た者が全部イスラエルなのではなく、 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7 また、アブラハムの子孫だからといって、その全部が子であるのではないからである。かえって「イサクから出る者が、あなたの子孫と呼ばれるであろう」。 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 すなわち、肉の子がそのまま神の子なのではなく、むしろ約束の子が子孫として認められるのである。 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9 約束の言葉はこうである。「来年の今ごろ、わたしはまた来る。そして、サラに男子が与えられるであろう」。 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
10 そればかりではなく、ひとりの人、すなわち、わたしたちの父祖イサクによって受胎したリベカの場合も、また同様である。 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 まだ子供らが生れもせず、善も悪もしない先に、神の選びの計画が、 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 わざによらず、召したかたによって行われるために、「兄は弟に仕えるであろう」と、彼女に仰せられたのである。 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 「わたしはヤコブを愛しエサウを憎んだ」と書いてあるとおりである。 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 では、わたしたちはなんと言おうか。神の側に不正があるのか。断じてそうではない。 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 神はモーセに言われた、「わたしは自分のあわれもうとする者をあわれみ、いつくしもうとする者を、いつくしむ」。 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 ゆえに、それは人間の意志や努力によるのではなく、ただ神のあわれみによるのである。 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 聖書はパロにこう言っている、「わたしがあなたを立てたのは、この事のためである。すなわち、あなたによってわたしの力をあらわし、また、わたしの名が全世界に言いひろめられるためである」。 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 だから、神はそのあわれもうと思う者をあわれみ、かたくなにしようと思う者を、かたくなになさるのである。 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 そこで、あなたは言うであろう、「なぜ神は、なおも人を責められるのか。だれが、神の意図に逆らい得ようか」。 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 ああ人よ。あなたは、神に言い逆らうとは、いったい、何者なのか。造られたものが造った者に向かって、「なぜ、わたしをこのように造ったのか」と言うことがあろうか。 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 陶器を造る者は、同じ土くれから、一つを尊い器に、他を卑しい器に造りあげる権能がないのであろうか。 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22 もし、神が怒りをあらわし、かつ、ご自身の力を知らせようと思われつつも、滅びることになっている怒りの器を、大いなる寛容をもって忍ばれたとすれば、 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 かつ、栄光にあずからせるために、あらかじめ用意されたあわれみの器にご自身の栄光の富を知らせようとされたとすれば、どうであろうか。 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 神は、このあわれみの器として、またわたしたちをも、ユダヤ人の中からだけではなく、異邦人の中からも召されたのである。 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 それは、ホセアの書でも言われているとおりである、「わたしは、わたしの民でない者を、わたしの民と呼び、愛されなかった者を、愛される者と呼ぶであろう。 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26 あなたがたはわたしの民ではないと、彼らに言ったその場所で、彼らは生ける神の子らであると、呼ばれるであろう」。 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27 また、イザヤはイスラエルについて叫んでいる、「たとい、イスラエルの子らの数は、浜の砂のようであっても、救われるのは、残された者だけであろう。 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28 主は、御言をきびしくまたすみやかに、地上になしとげられるであろう」。 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29 さらに、イザヤは預言した、「もし、万軍の主がわたしたちに子孫を残されなかったなら、わたしたちはソドムのようになり、ゴモラと同じようになったであろう」。 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30 では、わたしたちはなんと言おうか。義を追い求めなかった異邦人は、義、すなわち、信仰による義を得た。 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 しかし、義の律法を追い求めていたイスラエルは、その律法に達しなかった。 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 なぜであるか。信仰によらないで、行いによって得られるかのように、追い求めたからである。彼らは、つまずきの石につまずいたのである。 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 「見よ、わたしはシオンに、つまずきの石、さまたげの岩を置く。それにより頼む者は、失望に終ることがない」と書いてあるとおりである。 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
