| 1 | 愛する者たちよ，わたしは今やこの二通目の手紙をあなた方に書いています。その両方の手紙の中で，わたしは思い出させることによってあなた方の純真な思いを奮い立たせているのです。 | This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: |
| 2 | それは，聖なる預言者たちによって前もって語られていた言葉と，主また救い主の使徒たちであるわたしたちのおきてとを，あなた方が思い出すためです。 | That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: |
| 3 | まずこのことを知っておきなさい。終わりの日々にはあざける者たちがやって来て，自分たちの欲望のままに歩みながら， | Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, |
| 4 | こう言うでしょう。「彼の来臨の約束はどこにあるのか。父祖たちが眠りについた日から，すべてのものは創造のはじめ以来と同じようにして存続しているのだ」。 | And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. |
| 5 | それは，彼らが次のことを故意に忘れているからです。すなわち，神の言葉によって，天は昔からあり，地は水の中から，また水に囲まれて生じましたが， | For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: |
| 6 | それによって，当時の世は水に覆われて滅びたのです。 | Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: |
| 7 | 一方，今の天と地は，その同じ言葉によって火のために蓄えられています。不信心な者たちの裁きと滅びの日のために留め置かれているのです。 | But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. |
| 8 | しかし，愛する者たちよ，次の一点を忘れてはいけません。すなわち，主のもとでは，一日は千年のようであり，千年は一日のようであるということです。 | But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. |
| 9 | 主は，ある人たちが遅れとみなしているように，ご自分の約束に関して遅れておられるのではありません。むしろ，だれも滅びることなく，すべての人が悔い改めに至ることを望んでいるので，わたしたちに対して辛抱しておられるのです。 | The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. |
| 10 | しかし，主の日は夜の盗人のようにしてやって来ます。その日，もろもろの天は大きな音と共に過ぎ去り，もろもろの元素は猛烈に熱せられて溶け，地とそこでの業とは焼き尽くされるでしょう。 | But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. |
| 11 | こうして，これらのすべてのものが滅ぼされるのですから，あなた方はどれほど聖なる生き方と信心深さのうちにいる者とならなければならないことでしょう。 | Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, |
| 12 | そのようにして，神の日の来臨を待ち望み，切望しなければなりません。その日に，もろもろの天は燃えて溶け，もろもろの元素は猛烈に熱せられて溶解するのです。 | Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? |
| 13 | しかし，その方の約束によって，わたしたちは義の宿る新しいもろもろの天と新しい地を待ち望んでいます。 | Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. |
| 14 | それで，愛する者たちよ，あなた方はこれらのことを待ち望んでいるのですから，その方のみ前にあって，汚点も非の打ちどころもない者として，平安のうちに見いだされるように励みなさい。 | Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. |
| 15 | わたしたちの主の忍耐を救いと考えなさい。わたしたちの愛する兄弟パウロも，自分に与えられた知恵に基づいて，あなた方に書き送ったとおりです。 | And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; |
| 16 | また，以上の事柄を述べている彼のすべての手紙の中にあるとおりです。その手紙の中には幾つか理解しにくいところもあって，無知で不安定な者たちは，ほかの聖句に対してもしているように，それを曲解して，自らの滅びを招いています。 | As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. |
| 17 | そのようなわけで，愛する者たちよ，これらのことをあらかじめ知っているのですから，悪い者たちの迷いに共に連れ去られて，自分の堅実さから離れ落ちることのないように用心していなさい。 | Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. |
| 18 | むしろ，わたしたちの主また救い主であるイエス・キリストの恵みと知識において成長しなさい。その方に栄光が，今も，そして永久にありますように。アーメン。 | But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. |
