1 それからイエスは群衆と弟子たちに語って Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 言った，「律法学者たちとファリサイ人たちはモーセの座に着いている。 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 だから，彼らがあなた方に守るよう教えることはみな守り行ないなさい。だが，彼らの業には見倣ってはいけない。彼らは言いはするが，行なわないからだ。 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 担いきれないほどの重荷を束ねて人々の肩に載せるが，自分では彼らを助けるために指一本も持ち上げようともしない。 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 自分たちの業すべてを，単に人に見せようとして行なっているのだ。自分たちの聖句入れを広くし，自分たちの衣の房べりを大きくする。 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 彼らが好むのは，祝宴での上座や会堂での上席， And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 市場でのあいさつや人々に『ラビ，ラビ』と呼ばれることなのだ。 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 だが，あなた方は『ラビ』と呼ばれてはいけない。あなた方の教師はただ一人，キリストで，あなた方はみな兄弟だからだ。 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 地上のだれをも自分たちの父と呼んではいけない。あなた方の父はただ一人，天におられる方だからだ。 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 また，師と呼ばれてはいけない。あなた方の師はただ一人，キリストだからだ。 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 だが，あなた方の間で一番偉い者は，あなた方の召使いになるだろう。 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ，自分を低くする者は高められるだろう。 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 「あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方はやもめたちの家々を食い物にし，見せかけのために長い祈りをするからだ。だから，あなた方は最も厳しい裁きを受けるだろう。 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 「だが，あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方は人々の前で天の王国を閉ざすからだ。自分たちが入らないばかりか，入ろうとする者たちにも入らせないのだ。 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方は一人の改宗者を作るために海と陸を巡り歩き，それができると，自分に倍するほどのゲヘナの子とするからだ。 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 「あなた方は災いだ，盲目の案内人たち，『だれでも神殿にかけて誓うなら，それは無意味だが，神殿の金にかけて誓うなら，その者には果たす義務がある』と言う者よ。 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 盲目の愚か者たちよ！ 金と，その金を聖別する神殿とでは，どちらが偉大なのか。 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 また，『だれでも祭壇にかけて誓うなら，それは無意味だが，その上にある供え物にかけて誓うなら，その者には果たす義務がある』とも言う。 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 盲目の愚か者たちよ！ 供え物と，その供え物を聖別する祭壇とでは，どちらが偉大なのか。 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 だから，祭壇にかけて誓う者は，祭壇とその上にあるすべての物にかけて誓っているのだ。 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 神殿にかけて誓う者は，神殿とそこに住んでおられる方にかけて誓っているのだ。 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 天にかけて誓う者は，神のみ座とその上に座っておられる方にかけて誓っているのだ。 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 「あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方はハッカ，イノンド，クミンの十分の一税は納めていながら，律法のもっと重要な事柄，すなわち公正とあわれみと忠実をなおざりにしている。 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 盲目の案内人よ，ブヨはこして除きながら，ラクダをのみ込む者たちよ！ Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 「あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方は杯と皿の外側は清めるが，内側は強奪と不義で満ちているからだ。 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 盲目のファリサイ人よ，外側も清くするために，まず杯と皿の内側を清めなさい。 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 「あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方は白く塗った墓に似ているからだ。外側は美しく見えるが，内側は死んだ者たちの骨とあらゆる汚れでいっぱいだ。 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 このようにあなた方も，人には外側は義人のように見えるが，内側は偽善と不法でいっぱいだ。 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 「あなた方は災いだ，律法学者たちとファリサイ人たち，偽善者たちよ！ あなた方は預言者たちの墓を建て，義人たちの墓を飾り立てて， Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 『我々が父祖たちの日々に生きていたなら，彼らと共に預言者たちの血にあずかる者にはならなかっただろうに』と言う。 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 こうしてあなた方は，預言者たちを殺した者たちの子供であることを自分で証明している。 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 それなら，あなた方の父祖たちのますを満たしなさい。 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 蛇よ，マムシらの子孫よ，あなた方はどうしてゲヘナの裁きを逃れることができようか。 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 それゆえ，見よ，わたしはあなた方に預言者たちと賢人たちと律法学者たちを遣わす。あなた方は，そのうちのある者たちを殺してはりつけにし，ある者たちを自分たちの会堂でむち打ち，町から町へと迫害するだろう。 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 それは，義なるアベルの血から，あなた方が聖所と祭壇の間で殺したバラキアの子ザカリヤの血に至るまで，地上で流されたすべての義なる血があなた方の上にふりかかるためだ。 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 本当にはっきりとあなた方に告げる。こうした事柄すべては，この世代の上にふりかかるだろう。 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 「エルサレム，エルサレム，預言者たちを殺し，自分のところに遣わされた者たちを石打ちにする者よ！ めんどりがそのひなを翼の下に集めるように，わたしは幾たびあなたの子らを集めようとしたことか。だが，あなた方は応じなかった！ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 見よ，あなた方の家は荒れ果てたままに残される。 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 あなた方に告げるが，あなた方は，『主の名において来る者は幸いだ！』と言うときまでは，今後決してわたしを見ることはないだろう」 。 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
