1 テマン人エリパズ答へて曰く Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 智者あに虚しき知識をもて答へんや豈東風をその腹に充さんや Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 あに裨なき談益なき詞をもて辨論はんや Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 まことに汝は神を畏るる事を棄て その前に祷ることを止む Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 なんぢの罪なんぢの口を敎ふ 汝はみづから擇びて狡猾人の舌を用ふ For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 なんぢの口みづから汝の罪を定む 我には非ず汝の唇なんぢの惡きを證す Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 汝あに最初に世に生れたる人ならんや 山よりも前に出來しならんや Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 神の御謀議を聞しならんや 智慧を獨にて藏めをらんや Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 なんぢが知る所は我らも知ざらんや 汝が曉るところは我らの心にも在ざらんや What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 我らの中には白髮の人および老たる人ありて汝の父よりも年高し With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 神の慰藉および夫の柔かき言詞を汝小しとするや Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 なんぢ何ぞかく心狂ふや 何ぞかく目をしばたたくや Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 なんぢ是のごとく神に對ひて氣をいらだて 斯る言詞をなんぢの口よりいだすは如何ぞや That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 人は如何なる者ぞ 如何してか潔からん 婦の產し者は如何なる者ぞ 如何してか義からん What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 それ神はその聖者にすら信を置たまはず 諸の天もその目の前には潔からざるなり Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 况んや罪を取ること水を飮がごとくする憎むべき穢れたる人をや How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 我なんぢに語る所あらん 聽よ 我見たる所を述ん I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 是すなはち智者等が父祖より受て隱すところ無く傳へ來し者なり Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 彼らに而已この地は授けられて外國人は彼等の中に往來せしこと無りき Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 惡き人はその生る日の間つねに悶へ苦しむ 強暴人の年は數へて定めおかる The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 その耳には常に懼怖しき音きこえ平安の時にも滅ぼす者これに臨む A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 彼は幽暗を出得るとは信ぜず 目ざされて劒に付さる He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 彼食物は何處にありやと言つつ尋ねありき 黑暗日の備へられて己の側にあるを知る He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 患難と苦痛とはかれを懼れしめ 戰鬪の準備をなせる王のごとくして彼に打勝ん Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 彼は手を伸て神に敵し 傲りて全能者に悖り For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 頸を強くし 厚き楯の面を向て之に馳かかり He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 面に肉を滿せ 腰に脂を凝し Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 荒されたる邑々に住居を設けて人の住べからざる家 石堆となるべき所に居る And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 是故に彼は富ず その貨物は永く保たず その所有物は地に蔓延ず He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 また自己は黑暗を出づるに至らず 火燄その枝葉を枯さん 而してその身は神の口の氣吹によりて亡ゆかん He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 彼は虚妄を恃みて自ら欺くべからず 其報は虚妄なるべければなり Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 彼の日の來らざる先に其事成べし 彼の枝は緑ならじ It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 彼は葡萄の樹のその熟せざる果を振落すがごとく 橄欖の樹のその花を落すがごとくなるべし He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 邪曲なる者の宗族は零落れ 賄賂の家は火に焚ん For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 彼等は惡念を孕み 虚妄を生み その胎にて詭計を調ふ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
